In case you missed the series announcement: • the next phase
My main source for this video was the textbook Cellular and Molecular Immunology by Abul Abbas, Andrew Lichtman & Shiv Pillai. I'll do a deep dive livestream for this piece soon and post a link here when I do!
A NOTE ABOUT COPYRIGHT: A Capella Science parodies are covered under fair dealing in Canadian law and fair use under American law. Unfortunately for me though, RUclips is mostly governed in practice by agreements between RUclips, the creators, and the record labels. To keep from being sued RUclips gives very generous powers to big labels like EMI, Sony BMG, etc, which include automated copyright claiming and final say in the event of a dispute. I've tried to fight claims in the past but always hit a brick wall, so those videos that are monetized on my channel are monetized as "revenue sharing cover songs". Overall my income from the channel, purely from ads, is about 55 cents per thousand views--normal CPM is anywhere from 2-5 dollars, so I'm making somewhere between 1/4 and 1/10 of normal. Luckily I also have an incredibly generous community, and with the help of my patrons (along with private gigs) I can keep this channel going!
    ---LYRICS--
Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me ring up my blood cells of white
    First up
    Coming through the blood
    Neutrophil come slow your roll
    Eat up micro bods
Gummed up when your guts explode
    Hang tight waiting monocyte
Hulk out til you're chowing em down
    Signals from my killer cells
And those weak and infected go "blao"
    This is getting heavy
Better get the lymph nodes all ready
    Got a fever running
    And these signal cytokines flooding
    Defense overrun
we need to send a sample on
    Dendritic, you gotta go off
    so let's go!
Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me bring peptides to the meeting site
Fly into the lymph node with the details of the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte
Bring a friend, join the crowd
    Together filling up the node
    New white lymphocytes
Of the thymus and the bone
    Scatter-gun, million-to-one
    Which ones are compatible?
    "Ladies and gentlemen
    I got the antigen
So you can keep your eyes on the ball"
    This is getting heavy
Can we get T's trained already
    Helping, teaching, gunning
    Plasma cells with antibods flooding
    These made optimal
We need to save a sample of
Archive em, y'all others go off
    And let's go
Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me bring trained cells to the battle site
Target a specific set of features of the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte
Slide through the side to find the right site of the fight
    Fight it leukocyte
Fly like a guided viricide bind to the site
    Fight it leukocyte
Target cells exhibiting a feature of the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte
Die for the tribe deny the shock play
Try and imbibe a fly-by-night prey
Pry, nullify the viral home bay
    Fight it off leukocyte
Spy to provide a vital dossier
Vie to supply the binding Y shape
Scry, then apply a cytokine aide
    Fight it off leukocyte
Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me bring all guns to the firefight
Target tainted tissue with a team to SWAT the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte
Cause I I I got the SARS tonight
So watch me bring the fire to the parasite
Integrated synergy to seek and squash the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte
Guide what survived to multiply righting the blight
    Right it leukocyte
Time to resign, the high supply cost to requite
    Bite it leukocyte
But I will keep this memory with features of the bug
So I can fight it off by leukocyte

I'm diabetic. I had difficulty understanding chemistry because of learning electronis from old books that showed circular orbits of electrons. Then Tim came ot with his song and that got me to take another look. Suddenly it all made sense.

From a 15 year old high schooler, I'm happy for two things from his video:
You're back, with an absolute banger at that, the animations are amazing and cover a work of art as usual. I kept checking every day after your announcement whether you posted the vid (I've been playing your songs on repeat for the last month or two cause they're just amazing). Hope you were able to work on yourself and improve in the time you were off.
This is literally the only video I've been able to go, hey, i know and understand almost all if not all of it. Thanks to Kurzegesagt immune book for that. Made me smile hearing cell after cell and remembering oh that does that. The level of complexity and coordinated features in just one system of the body is astounding. It's no surprise it takes us so long to match through medicine what millions of years of evolution have allowed the immune system to do passively. Cellular mechanisms are absolutely fascinating, and I fully believe that the next big step for humanity will be when we fully understand and can create our own sophisticated cellular machinery and systems either from scratch or by completely restructuring existing cells. I think that will be our nanotech revolution.

The change in tone between "Quarantine" (Hide and Seek), and this song, reminds me that over the last four years, humanity has persevered, held on to hope despite reduced face-to-face connection, allocated resources, and brought centuries of accumulated knowledge to the fight. Thanks for your part in maintaining that hope, and for valorizing the pursuit of knowledge which makes our species so particularly resilient.

In this song, the singer describes how their immune system responds to a viral infection, specifically SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).
They start by mentioning the different types of white blood cells involved. Neutrophils are called to the scene to destroy harmful microorganisms. Monocytes, another type of white blood cell, join in to engulf and eliminate the invaders. Natural Killer cells send signals to identify and attack infected cells.
As the infection progresses, the immune response intensifies. Fever rises, and various signaling molecules called cytokines flood the body. The immune defenses become overwhelmed, and a sample of the virus needs to be sent for analysis.
Dendritic cells play a crucial role in presenting the virus's antigens to the immune system, ensuring a targeted response. The singer emphasizes the importance of this process.
The immune system recruits more cells to the lymph nodes, including white blood cells produced in the thymus and bone marrow. The goal is to identify the specific features of the virus and produce antibodies that can neutralize it. The process involves a large number of cells, and compatibility is key.
The singer describes the intricate movements of the immune cells, their interactions, and their efforts to fight off the virus. They mention the importance of plasma cells, which produce antibodies, and the need to archive samples for future reference.
Leukocytes, a general term for white blood cells, are central to the immune response. The singer describes their actions in fighting the infection, targeting specific features of the virus and neutralizing it.
The lyrics use metaphors to depict the immune system's actions as a battle or firefight. They mention the importance of teamwork, guided movement, and the release of cytokines to aid in the fight against the virus.
Despite the challenges and sacrifices, the singer expresses determination to fight off the infection. They highlight the memory of the virus's features, which will help the immune system respond effectively in the future.
Overall, the song portrays the complex and coordinated response of the immune system in combating a viral infection, emphasizing the crucial role of leukocytes in defending the body.
