A lesser known stat about Ricky Ponting as captain, is in the 42 tests he lead after Warne and McGrath retired, Australia won 21 of them which is 50%. Lots of great captains leading great sides have win percentages of only slightly more than 50%, and Ponting did this with a team in rapid decline.
No statistics can show how dominating, entertaining and perfectionist the aussiess were. Most of those tests were won by the end of the first day's play.
Some excellent points raised by Vaughan and Ponting, and surprisingly, the most pertinent one was raised by Swann: not to make the best player of your team the captain, because he may not have the personality of a captain. That said though, why isn't someone like Steve Waugh in this panel instead of Swann?

I disliked Rickey Ponting when I saw him hitting Indian bowlers all over the park in 2003 world cup final against India. And the dislike continued to increase until the sydney 2008 test against India. After watching him commenting at various places and in master class videos, am a big fan of him. He is truly a person to whom every youngster should listen to.
@Muttley To me he was on wrong side on certain incidents like bad umpiring and rude behaviour towards Indian batter and bowler. In 2003 I was in 8th standard and did not liked him for so many years only due to that match.
@Muttley but now I appreciate what he has done over the years minus certain incidents which he could have handled well. I will easily exchange him for Sachin in my team now.
I mean I know Waugh had a ludicrously talented side at his disposal, but a 72% win rate is nevertheless completely absurd. Also funny that Swann's read on Root and the England captaincy turned out to be somewhat prophetic.
South Africa and Pakistan (post 1999) had significantly declined by the time Steve Waugh was captain and from 2000 onwards the West Indies were minnows. Under Taylor, Australia beat considerably stronger sides.
at 4.43 ... fortunately a super star in kevin pietersen and an outstanding opening batsman in andrew strauss came along to complement vaughn's own batting brilliance so that it wasn't mere fantasy cricket.
Mike Brearley is a great example of someone who was perfect for captaincy. He wasn’t the best player but he’s one of the best captains ever. His man management skills were 2nd to none and that’s the main thing needed to be a great captain.
Look at Geoff Boycott and Ian Botham. Great players but lousy captain's. Boycott knew the game inside out but couldn't captain either Yorkshire or England. Botham was given the job to young.
It's ironic Ponting pretty much gave Vaughan a career from 2005 Ashes..If he didn't bowl first in the 2nd test then Vaughan would be just another name in cricket history.

For me, the Aussie captain has the edge over other captains purely because that baggy green cap looks more stylish than other team's caps. I wouldn't mind one myself to wear when I go out 😆
Ponting is star no-one can touch him + sadly ponting lost his touch in 2010 ..as age affected his mentality and playing character...new Australia cricket somewhat ponting missed the character of his blokes in 2000's retirement of gilchrist Hayden Symonds ...which became tough for him + if this guy's could have continued ponting could be never touched again in cricket .
I would personally like to compare Dhoni to Ponting.and in my opinion Dhoni is better captain acrosss all formats..its sad that one of the best captain of all time(Dhoni)isn't even there in top 7((.
Bhaskar....well the reason why I rate Dhoni higher is because he didn't really had the team of punter(1998 -2008)Dhoni took an average team and made it one the best...And By the way Who is Vaughan?))...Don't know him....in my opinion Dhoni is better than Punter bcz ponting had a readymade team while Dhoni didn't have it but he made it and made india won many tests and WC.
@Bhaskar Bhasku....True..plus to me Dhoni is the most humble cricketer(despite having so many records) while ponting was arrogant...He bowled the final over from some police guy or someone who wasn't even a star player....despite having an animosity and the rivalry that INDOPAK have..He Never said any bullshit word infront of the media or so#LoveFromPakistan#MSTheLegend
well i use to rate dhoni's captaincy at the beginning which includes test cricket. i think overall he was a great limited overs captain. in terms of test cricket, dhoni started getting great players in his team when he started captaincy. his style of captaincy worked well in india. in terms of overseas, he tried to be too unorthodox which worked well at home with his gameplan and field settings, but was not effective overseas. with the new stock of fast bowlers india started producing at the end, he was not good enough to make them be effective. thats why he knew he had to give kohli the captaincy
Amour et paix brother in white ball cricket ms dhoni was surely a better captain specially the results he able to produce with below par bowling but in test pointing was better because he can also be able to control the game with his batting

He was a hopeless captain
Vaughan was the only person who could captain Kevin Pietersen the right way. He was just great.
Ricky was just phenomenal
Kevin pietersen was a difficult person to captain
@@aryavart296 No he wasn't. He just needed handling in a bit different way.
Some of his best test innings were under Straus, his 151 in Lanka Land and 186 in India for example

Love to see Ricky Ponting - one of the very greatest players ever.
Whether Ricky pointing sledges or not he is my favourite player I like love him very much from India he is greatest Australia captain legend
He was dangerous in the shower after games, which is why warne is now turning into a girl

Probably because Swann was working for BT sport and McGrath wasn’t in the 2017/18 Ashes series.
Great video, who here is a captain of their side?

Wonderful Insights. Just been searching for this video for long,
It's incredible how Ganguly has the exact same opinion on Captaincy.
Great minds think alike!!!
Brearly was amazing at understanding his players.
Three of those Australian captains in the top five had Shane Warne in their team.
In cricket pointing as a captain has reached such a hight that no body can,,,,

Vaughn was a one series wonder... they had a team equal to us in 05!
Great experiences ! To learn from.
What's Swanny doing here
Great interview.
I like how everyone is calling punter Ricky.
The thumbnail looks like they are in love 😂
Look at Geoff Boycott and Ian Botham. Great players but lousy captain's. Boycott knew the game inside out but couldn't captain either Yorkshire or England. Botham was given the job to young.
Include Steve Smith?
Also Sachin
Wow! Greg James is hosting! Err? Who did he play for/do? Anything? He's Alan Partridge in 2034
It's ironic Ponting pretty much gave Vaughan a career from 2005 Ashes..If he didn't bowl first in the 2nd test then Vaughan would be just another name in cricket history.
Vaughan is the GOAT skip coz he defeated the GOAT team (oz) & GOAT bowling duo (McGrath & Warne) & GOAT wicky bat
Imraan Khan ...getting those Pakistan players working together ....
Kohli has captained 40 times and his win % is 55. He should be in top 5 now. A captain is only as good as the team he has.

The team Ricky Ponting had any one could have been great.. kidding.. he is good..
Bukkshit. Indians would have spoken caste religion and screwed up
After Warne, McGrath and Langer retired, Ponting captained 42 Tests and outright won 21 of them at 50% which on its own is in the top 20 of all time
All brilliant players but for me MS Dhoni was the greatest ever captain that I have seen!
The captain is as good as his or her team
What is swann doing here?
Because the guy tppk 255 wkts in 5 years.
How did Michael Clark get 51% victories when they keep on getting battered by England
Clarke captained only 2 series (1 series win and 1 series loss) against England. Totaling 5 wins, 3 losses and 2 draws.
Vincent Ho didn’t he captain the team in 2015, and 2014, meaning he won 7 tests and lost 5, drawn 2
@@jamiengo2343 thats 50%
India gave them a 4-0 win in 2011 in Australia
❤️❤️❤️
Sammy was the best captain I've ever seen
Mahela jayawardane was one of the best captain ever to play the game
Yup! One of the most underrated captain n player I would say..
Yup...one of the finest...

Swann ended up being pretty spot on about Joe Root
As a new captain 9/10 wins must be doing something right 😂
Send a link of this video to Joe Root immediately!😁

Oh Swann go home.
I met Michael Vaughan in a hot tub in Perth in 2007
Did it go anywhere?
Asbo I met jayawardene in one too 😂😂
very romantic
Good luck Joe Root
He he !
We’re going to bowl
Joe Robot
Hashim Amla
TheUniqueGamer ! amla was a dreadful captain. quit midway thru a series
Graeme Smith was a far better skipper
Art of captaincy = having good players. Ricky was an average captain at best.

The art of captaincy… aka. In australianese - How to cheat and get away with unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Is MS Dhoni a better captain than Ricky ponting???Ponting was obviously one of the best of his time But MS Dhoni in my opinion was better than Him.
Limited over formats, maybe. He has a better record than Dhoni but he also had a better team than Dhoni. Tests, no chance. So overall, no.
This is a comparison of test captains. And the record itself shows Ponting is way ahead.
