How to Set UP ID3 Tags for Podcast Audio Files

Here I answer the common questions about what is an ID3 Tag and Metadata as it relates to podcasting. Beginner podcasters need to know this to help their podcast's identification and discoverability.
Some podcast hosts who prefer MP3 uploads, may also recommend you create ID3 tags for your audio file prior to uploading. An ID3 tag allows extra information about the file to be added so it may be read and shared on an audio player’s screen. The information contained is usually descriptive by nature and may include cover art, the artist, album name and genre. There are 80 possible entries you could fill in, but we suggest you choose only those relevant to your podcast. At minimum it is recommended you provide a title and description.
While adding ID3 Tags (metadata) is optional, it is considered best practice to help improve your listener’s experience. The common ID3 v2basic tags often include title, artist, album, year, genre, URL, comments/ description, and copyright.
Usual podcast tags are: identifier, feed, and description. These are the tags used by top podcasts you may also want to consider. Don’t overload the tags with more information than is needed. To create an ID3 tag your file must be exported as an MP3. If using Audacity, you can locate the MP3 metadata by choosing Edit - Metadata and filling in the relevant options prior to exporting your file. Other ID3 tag editors offering more features than Audacity or Windows Properties are also available online. A google search for “Open Source ID3 editor” will provide results for your consideration.
On windows you may also Right mouse click on the MP3 file and choose Properties from the menu that appears. Once inside the properties click on the details tab and you will then be able to change some of the fields within this tab. After making changes, click “Apply” to save the changes to the file’s properties. This needs to be done before your file is uploaded to your podcast host.
