I honestly do not think his "crazy thing" is an act. At some point he finally crossed that double yellow line on the highway of sanity. So he felt like his performance had not been appreciated as I should have been. I guess that's why he quit acting. Well, the same happened to Leo DiCaprio in Titanic, but him, instead of quitting, he chose to try even harder and he finally succeeded to be regarded as an ACTOR and not a sex symbol.
