    The female cats of the series just get the short end of the stick-- there's even a stigma against female leaders having kits for some reason, as if it would distract her from her clan. The warrior code just seems to think female cats in roles of power can't handle two things at once (even though deputies and medicine cat apprentices could easily help)

      i think if males were biologically capable of getting pregnant and birthing children, they would be exactly the same as the females. i dont agree that they should be treated this way or that its fair in any way, but i do know the reason, and its because biology is like that. queens need to stay in the nursery until their kits are capable of being left alone without a cat to nurse and protect them. the leader wouldnt be able to call a meeting while letting a kit nurse, or while shes watching her kits wrestle. it isnt fair, decent or good in any way, but this is why.

    This is a very valid point. I always thought it was a little odd for medicine cats to carry this stress and hold themselves back. It's just as distracting as having kits. In my fan series, Secret of the Shadow, Sharpwish, the medicine cat is constantly shunned becuase she had kits. But it goes deeper than one might think. Sharpwish was a pregnant warrior before she thrown in the medicine cat den by Wolfstar after their current medicine cat had died, not knowing her predicament. She was then accused of breaking the warrior code when the kits were born. It gets REALLY deep and questions all the warrior code has.

    Honestly, medicine cats should be able to have kits. Here’s why;
    1st, no matter what, all cats are going to favor there families a little more then other cats, (unless you don’t get along or something) even if your not a medicine cat.
    2nd, if you are a medicine cat, you have to take care of the clan, make sure that no one is hurt or sick, always have the supplies to help you’re clan mates, and if someone dies, then you often blame it on yourself (like cinderpelt did when Silverstream died giving birth to her and Graystripe’s kits) and feel as if you could have done more to save that shecat/Tom.
    3rd, shouldn’t a medicine cat be able to love another cat like any other cat? I mean, yeah, there’s favoritism, but again, all cats have some sort of favoritism towards their family (unless you dont get along) so what’s the difference? As long as you still care for everyone, I don’t see the problem with having kits.
    ( thx for reading all that! Lmk if you all agree or disagree and why)

      going by the same logic by the books and your first and third reason, if medicine cats can’t have kittens because if there’s a situation where their kit and some other warrior is in danger, they’ll probably look after their kit better, but let’s say leafpool’s sister squirrelflight is hurt and so is brackenfur, a random warrior. obviously she’s gonna take care of squirrel better because she’s her sister, or if her parents/parent got hurt, she would look after them better rather than some cat she isn’t related to, right? Therefore, going by that same logic, medicine cats wouldn’t be able to have siblings or any type of family, it’s stupid

    I think that there is a other reason about kits. Medicíne cats arent allowed to have kits becose they are closely attached to Starclan witch is bassicky their holy power. So maybe its becose med cats are told to be "pure" or "untouched" and have connection to Starclan. If you know what I mean. (But yea they can but dont have to have kits. But with fosterparenting it may kinda lead to Brokenstar 2.0 situation or for those kits to feel unwanted. :')) welp that may also be the reason
    Also hey. How would they kit? If a med cat was she cat and was giving birth who would help her? We need more than 1 med cat.

    I'd love to see a thing where some clans let medicine cats have kits and some don't, like how in the Catholic Church, nuns and priests can't marry or have children, but most protestants don't have that rule. I feel like that's where it stemmed from. That sounds like an interesting plot.

    Poor Yellowfang really got the wrong end of the rule. You read Yellowfang’s secret you will cry. She died to smoke and finally had peace. She’s the most holly character (in my opinion) and despite her loyalty and her dedication and basically throwing her life away her Clan still basically ran over her over and over and over. Yellowfang never got the recognition for her sacrifice and the salt in the wound was that Brackenfoot (her father) was the first cat to accuse her of killing kits. Which, might I mention, were her little brother and sister? Hello? In my very, very personal opinion, Yellowfang is the perfect example for cats to have hearts and change the warrior and medicine code.

    Ehhh can't say I really agree about Moth Flight. Sure the tragic circumstance of her loosing her mate and the stresses of being the first medicine cat didn't _help_ her situation, but it's not what ultimately made her decide to instate the rule. The problem was that whenever she'd be out fulfilling one of her medicine cat duties, one of her kits would get in trouble or hurt or need help and she'd immediately abandon her duty and rush to her kit's aid. It WAS the kits that that WERE distracting her and making it very difficult for her to be an effective medicine cat. Now, would that always be the case? Not necessarily, as in some of the exceptions you mentioned such as a Clan having multiple medicine cats or even the medicine cat being a tom. But I think her motivation for the rule is completely reasonable and not merely born out of "nothing going right".
    As for "family bias will happen no matter what"--only to an extent. Parenthood is a unique relationship from siblings or friends. Not to say that the latter are unimportant or weak or lesser--not in the least. But ask just about any parent and they'll tell you that the attachment of a parent to their child is very different from just about any other family or friendly attachment. Yes, siblings, parents, close friends, or even mates would certainly be more of an emotional strain for a medicine cat than loose acquaintances, but their own kits would be on a whole other level.
    So...no, the rule isn't saying "if medicine cats have kits they won't love their clans", as loving kits and loving the clan are not mutually exclusive. What it IS saying is "if medicine cats have kits those kits will naturally take precedent over other clanmates because that's just how parents are and in many cases that'll cause problems, so it's better to avoid it".

    • @Ari_C
      @Ari_C 4 года назад +5

      How do you explain clan leaders being allowed to have kits then? It's the exact same issue with personal bias and possibly pulling the leader away from their duties which are arguably just as important yet there's no rule preventing it.

Then the med would focus on her duties (ofc would check on her kits) when she has time to. And there ALWAYS has to be a queen in the nursery, either nursing or expecting kits. And in leafpool’s case, Daisy would be very glad to raise the three.

    But medicine cat is also my favorite role, and when I wrote my own fanfics I can’t help but be torn whether making my fav charater (med cat) pick a mate who i really want them to be with, or keeping them loyal to the warrior code since that cat is very loyal and would never do anything wrong.

  • @sketchywolfgrl9564

    I always found this a little weird as a rule, because if the medicine cats could mate and reproduce, maybe more cats would be born with an inclination to being a healer since there would be that kind of personality around the kits instead of them automatically going "I'm going to be the best warrior ever!" Plus cut down on cats that don't really appreciate the things medicine cats do is just as important as hunting and fighting because they'll be interacting more than just when a cat gets a thorn in its paw.

    What if, instead of just not being allowed to have a mate or kits, they weren't allowed to have much connection with any cat at all? So, the Medicine Den would be in a very secluded area of the camp, and the Medicine cats would spend almost all of their time there, connecting with Starclan and doing stuff with herbs. They would rarely see their clan mates. The only other cat they would see on a regular basis would be their mentor/apprentice, and sometimes the clan leader since they act as advisors a lot. So the only real, meaningful relationships they would have would be with their mentor/apprentice, the Medicine cats from other clans, and most importantly, Starclan.
    Sounds interesting, don't ya think?

    Bias. Its always gonna exist unless med cats are robots. Impossible to avoid. Even if this cat is an orphan they will have friends.
    Dying during birth and/or greif over dead kits and/or mate. Have an apprentice or fully trained med cat besjdes yourself. And with greif, again they have family and friends.
    Taking care of the kits will distract. Have another med cat, or another cat take care of them while your busy.

    • @testerwulf3357
      @testerwulf3357 2 года назад

      Yea I think that's the argument here. Female medicine cats can have kits if there's another healer in the clan (apprentice or full fledged medicine cat), and possibly a queen to help in feeding the kit part time (not feeding it all the time but if the medicine cat is needed the queen can lend a little milk for the time being) and a mate or clanmates can babysit the kit most of the time..she'd still be able to see her kits and get the experience of having kittens and a mate but with the clan supporting her as she supports them. It's like when you have a baby but you have work so you have a babysitter during working hours, you're still content with the situation or at least most are even though you aren't raising it 24/7.

    I have to disagree, firstly medicne cats take an oath, by choice. Fully aware of the consequences.
    (No kits, no mate, no family).
    If anything the clans should make absolutely sure that the cats are old enough and mature enough to fully understand what they are agreeing to when they take the oath, because most of them are young and inexperienced cats.
    Secondly, not every cat is going to be able to act just as leafpool did. She also lacked on the bonding with her kits as well. She loved them, but she never had the chance to raise them or care for them as a mother would have. Even if the kits really were squirrel's leafpool wouldn't care for them as much as if they were her own.
    [Like if you had a child, and your brother or sister also had a child. If both children are for whatever reason dangling off a cliff and you can only save one of them. You're obviously going to save your own child rather than the other one.] That's a dark example...
    After Mothwing had her kits and struggled between her love for her kits, and her clan mates she knew not every cat would be strong enough to put aside their love and feelings to care for their clan as a whole, thus the making of the rule because most every queen/tom prioritizes their own kits above all other cats.
    As for medicine cat tom's having kits, its 2019 eveyone would flip on the Erin's that it was sexist...
    The problem with medicine cats having kits isn't all about the birth or pregnancy, it's about the care the cats would give their kits. And the possibility of bias between them and their clanmates Otherwise medicine cat Tom's would have kits. besides medicine cats often lack real world experience so a warrior tom vs a medicine cat tom, the med tom technically has less of everything. The warrior tom has the freedom to have kits and go on about his day hunt, play, train them and do pretty much whatever afterwards. The medicine cat tom would be sitting around confined in camp. He wouldn't be able to teach his kits anything, or hunt for them, really not even have time play with them either. like a warrior tom or even a queen would be able to. And like a she cat he would know all the things that could happen or injure his kits and he would know all of the things he would have to do to save them, and all of the things he couldn't do to save them. So a tom would also be wondering and worrying about his kits all the time. Instead of focusing on his work. So i'm sure they would treat their kits with more care than other cat's kits as well as the she cats.

    I agree 110%
    Based on one cat's experience, and her role as the founding of this new role in the Clans history, Mothflight basically condemns all medicine cats from finding happiness and love the same as their Clanmates because of her own singular experience. And it has been proven time and again throughout the books that a medicine cat carries the burdens of the Clan more than anyone else, save for the Clan leader, especially when a cat dies under their care, despite their best efforts. It's also been proven many times through Yellowfang and Leafpool that medicine cats can and will take care of the Clan regardless of their own familial ties and favorites. There was even a moment where Leafpool had to avoid tending to her kits first to show how dedicated she was to her role as a medicine cat, and that's a hard thing to do, as a mother.
    Not to mention, most of the grief and hatred and anger throughout the series is because medicine cats are forbidden to have mates and kits like the rest of their Clan. Brokenstar became the way he was because Yellowfang had to give him up to a nasty Queen who tormented him, and she could do nothing but watch as her son became twisted and evil. Had she been allowed to mother and nurse him for the short six moons, Yellowfang might have changed his destiny and returned to her life of a medicine cat long before her own mentor died many moons later.
    Leafpool too. She had plenty of cats in the Clan who could help her, and she could still do basic healing, and even let another Queen tend to the kits if she had an emergency to respond to. But because of the rule, the Clan was thrown into more chaos because she had to lie about her kits, and then face the punishment of being hated by both her kits and her Clan for keeping the secret for so long. And Jayfeather was still a very young and inexperienced medicine cat, who even stated he thought it was dumb that one of their best medicine cats had to stop doing what she was meant for just because she had kits. Leafpool eventually goes back to being a medicine cat, yeah, but she shouldn't have even stopped in the first place. Her devotion to her Clan's well-being was stronger than anything else. She had proven that time and again long before her secret was revealed.
    Medicine cats are just like warriors, but they battle different things that affect the Clan's lives. They should be allowed to have mates and kits and feel that kind of fulfillment and not regret it, or have to hide it in fear and shame.
    Basically, I hope the Erins address this with a point from Mothflight in a future book, who has seen all the tragedy her rule has created and amend the Medicine cat rule to "A medicine cat MAY have a mate and kits, so long as there is at least one fully trained medicine cat to take over in their place. They may raise the kits until apprenticed, and then return immediately to their medicine cat duties. Afterwards, they must treat their kits no more or less than they would their whole Clan."

    Me and my ex debunked the whole "medicine cats shouldn't have kits" thing.
    We both said that a medicine cat gets an apprentice, right? They train them for 6 moons (or a bit longer) and then the apprentice becomes a medicine cat.
    So, why can't they have kits then? You could say that they might need two for a battle or smth but even then, battles rarely ever happen and there's not a lot of warriors who just get hurt.
    So yeah, what BGA said.

    I feel like medicine cats should be able to a mate and maybe adopt kits or something but they shouldn’t have kits of their own

    There should be another role where your a warrior but you also know the most important herbs so the medicine cats can have kids and also in case of emergency. Just like brightheart! She was a warrior but also knew lots of medicine cat stuff.

    I agree with this too much.
    I think that to have kits when a med cat, you need to have a full grown apprentice with an official med cat name, just to help with the birth of the kit and so you can 100% trust them because they know everything that they need, and a foster mother that is willing to take care of the kit and you also need a clan that cares.
    You know.
    Like Thunderclan.
