    The fear of landing out, interesting subject, goal fixation is part of the problem, the must get there imperative can often lead pilots to make really bad choices but it does not only sit fully with the pilot flying the aircraft as it can also come from the other club members, I can recall in my early days this attitude that pilots must stay within glide range of the field, they were actively discouraged from venturing further and when conditions are generally not good for distance flights as in our case to find a day suddenly pick up was a real gem and was missed by many, I know for myself I landed out more times in a month than most of the club pilots had landed out in their whole flying career and while never ideal, it meant that so-called fear turned into a skill to be able to do so without issues and hone the skill of constantly being aware of possible landing fields as you proceed, As I found out it can go wrong for you so quickly out of the blue you would have thought the wings had fallen off, hero to zero in less than three minutes on the baro, tends to focus the mind on what can actually happen and how important that constant tracking of landing sites can really be. Happy gliding.

    You're right about the fear of landing out. I cured mine by doing a flight in a motor glider where we simply flew around practising field selection. I also worked on my landings, being able to pick a spot and land on it. I still get nervous, so I lessen that by picking fields or at the least landable areas from higher up. Roy's right about drinking, but what goes in ... I just wear adult nappies (diapers). The only thing more fun that cross-country is starting to do competition: it's a great way to improve by getting a whole lot of flying done on successive days, plus more advice that you know what to do with.

    Great video, thank you for sharing. For me, the music at the end was a distraction, I'd much rather listen to the sound of the airflow. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Keep safe

    Roy, Another great video. Congratulations on the new '20. I love your videos and have been out to your airport! I have a couple of suggestions that I hope will help. 1) It would be useful to know the units of your speed (kts, mph, or kph). 2) What is your map 'to scale' with? No scale is shown. I don't think it is 'to scale' without a scale. 3) Your vario is 1,000 ft/min, not fpm as described. Keep up the great work.

      I use mph. Dashware.net allows you to choose km, mph and so on. Thanks for the feedback

    Awesome stuff. Can there ever be so many thermals en route that you can just fly thru them without circling and still make a decent cross country flight out of them?

    Just working on adding my glider rating to my license...drinking all that water, how do you deal with "peeing it out" during a 4.5 hour flight?

    • @flygliders
      @flygliders  21 день назад

      @@scottlittfin5832 I held it the whole time. I have used a 16 oz water bottle

      @@flygliders Sounds good. I'm probably too old to hold it for that length of time, but I used to have one of those "pee bottles" that are red with a large opening and a screw on cap. Maybe it's time to get a new one, LOL.
