On the 2nd week of my trip to Hawaii, I went into a surf shop and rented a quality bodyboard. No waste and the daily rate was far less than buying a cheap one
Hey I would like to say that everything that your teaching is 100% correct, and just really good at explain everything, not just for this video but also your duck diving video and any other videos that you post about teaching people how to bodyboard. I grew up in the era where you learned it on your own. I'm glad kids now days has some reference on how and what to do to get started.
Excellent video! I've been aware of this for a while. We ended up getting one of those cheapies for free, as a tenant left one behind. I told my wife the board is rubbish and that we should be careful using it. Generally it's used in the swimming pool. I went out and bought my son a proper, well constructed board. No regrets. In fact it was his birthday gift last year, and today is actually his birthday again! Thanks for creating this.
Great video Iain. I've been pushing the same message for years now. Unfortunately the holiday market brigade don't really understand the concept of paying a fair price for a decent quality board... this has always puzzled me because some of these same people don't mind spending hundreds on snowboards, golf clubs etc. It's not a difficult concept you get what you pay for. I would suggest a family share a decent durable PE board for around the £100 mark they hold a decent resale value of at least half the original cost....so use it 5 times and it's basically paid for itself.
@@iaincampbell_been looking at Vision are they worth buying or not newbie here bought one b4 , but it was shit shouldn’t and didn’t expect much at the price tbf
Can you do a video discussing which is better, a bat tail or a crescent tail board? I have been riding the bat tail more than the crescent tail boards lately. But would like to hear your opinion especially for waves above 6ft. Thanks again for all the helpful videos
I’ve recently gotten into body boarding and I love watching your videos they definitely help me because I don’t know how to swim due to my phobia and watching your videos helps me get rid of my phobia while boarding and also I have a 30 dollar body board from Costco and it’s pretty high quality for its price I will definitely buy a higher quality soon tho
Happy to hear that you are enjoying it and that you’re getting over your phobia. These things take time and you just got to keep working at it. Be careful out there and enjoy the process 🤙🏼
Preach chief! Legend. Cheers from Bristol. Was so stoked to watch your video from The Wave as I went there for the first time in a wave pool 5 days before seeing your video 🤙
My dad bought me one of these boards when I was 8 years old, over 20 years ago. I still have that board in my loft, still in one piece. Purely because it's what started my love of bodyboarding. Going to start my little boy in the summer this year and will be buying him something decent to start with for sure.
I think for noob tourists, board rental from a local surf shop is probably the best option. I get why they don’t want to buy an expensive board for a week or two playing in the white water while on holiday. But as you say, those cheap boards are so bad for the environment.
Good clip with a great message, bru. They're pretty much single-use bodyboards, especially when you've got some heavy dads truck-driving down a shorebreak.
Another point you missed out on is that cheap boards they last probably a maximum of 3 times going to the beach and using it. In the long term it is actually cheaper to buy a more advanced PP or PE core board because of how long it lasts (my PP lasted 5 years with constant use). So if you keep buying cheap boards when they snap, the total amount spent on them will be more than what you spend on a regular PP or PE core in the future.
I meant to fit that in but thanks for the reminder. That’s a huge point that we brush over! Hopefully this will raise some awareness and educate people.
Hey bru, flat bottom bodyboards offer speed with less drag, while channel bottom bodyboards provide greater control and stability, particularly in bottom turns and technical moves.
I started on a cheap board like that almost 150+ pounds ago lol. Absolute garbage and broke after the first session. Had no idea what I was doing but caught my first good ride with it. Ill never forget that forst thrill and have been chasing it since. Now I ride Tribe, Jay Reale boards.
I decided it was time for a major upgrade! I just got myself a Science Veeks Hybrid 43. More board than I need? Possibly! But it was time to get a real one. No more cheapos for me!
I pulled mussels my back because I bought a cheap board that snapped in half in a big wave in Jersey. It snapped in half the front went down and my face hit the bottom and the wave carried my legs over to the point I think I felt my feet touch my head. One of the absolute wost beach accidents I got into when I was 14.
I have ridden PP and PE cores over the years. By far my fave core is NRG now. Perfect flex but also recoil/spring for UK water. As I understand it this is a low density PP. I have warped PE boards riding DK quite quickly but NRG seems to hold up really well to this.
I hate that all I have been able to find is polystyrene boards. Sometimes I can find ones that have a little hard bottom but I want a straight up solid boogie board.
Hopefully this video will reach a greater audience than your subscribers who will no doubt already be well aware of the perils of these cheap boards and own real boards. For the win 🤙
Actually i just got a good board with good materials. It was used so its under 50£ . Not gonna lie but it seems a pretty good deal for all levels of bodyboaders .
I wasn't even aware there was such a thing as professional bodyboarder, I thought it was something you bought once on vacation and left to rot in the shed

i dont know what i have i had the styrofoam ones at first on my vacation but they were snaped in half luckily only on the inside but my dad bought ones with plastic on the bottem and different foam on the outside and they are way more durable
Have always hated these pointless boards, you can pick up properly laminated boards with slicks for sub $50 in kids sizes and around $50-$60AUD for adult sizes. What are your thoughts on the entry level EPS boards with stringers? I'm back from a 15 year bodyboarding hiatus now my kids are getting old enough to get in to the ocean, have been surprised at the number of EPS boards from reputable brands. I only ever remembered PE and PP from yesteryear
Never saw anybody surf properly with these children's boards... only children playing around with them. I use my 30€ dropzone board for 15 years or longer now and it works perfectly fine.
@@iaincampbell_ Haha, sorry dude but my own skill doesn't depend on the board. I'm alright. No world champion but having fun nevertheless. And I can still read the ocean better than most people out there... by far.

These were all over the shops in Hawaii, it's a shame and surprising they don't stop selling them in such a beautiful place!

This is more about education than anything else. These materials are so bad for the environment and it needs to be known! Tell everyone.

Hey bru, flat bottom bodyboards offer speed with less drag, while channel bottom bodyboards provide greater control and stability, particularly in bottom turns and technical moves.

for plugging a board iain can’t oh use a drill or is it recommended to use a screw driver
You can I guess. Just a chance you may rip into the top material… I prefer a screw driver as you can heat it up

Hi man! What is the max weight is supported by a board?
I’m not too sure. The bigger the board gets generally the thicker they are made so it all just depends on how thick the board is.

EPS is not the best but it’s better than their single use, polystyrene counterparts.
Desde Lima, Perú, totalmente de acuerdo contigo, las tablas de PE no valen su precio.

Thanks for this video. Do you use PP core even in cold water ?
Yes I do. You have 2 types of PP: standard PP and low density PP or NRG.

$120+ starting out for a board... People have lost grips with what budget, cheap, or inexpensive actually is.
