@DIV1NITAL i absolutely love it! With the new firmware updates it just keeps getting better and better. Sounds great, has tons of functionality, and its form factor and ease of use makes it a consistent part of my production process. The 1010 community forum is the best! You can literally ask anything, no matter how dumb (personal experience) and it's almost always answered the same day. With only a few products in their line, they work really hard to make sure each one lives up to it's full potential. It was between the 1010bb or the mpc1 for me and I have zero regrets!
Hahha that babysound probably a joke around the table on the day 1 of the conception of the BB! Thank you 1010, really appreciate mine! Also soooo portable!
Would be nice to have support for multiple layers of velocity. Maybe by parsing the wav file name's suffix for the velocity value to be assigned. That would allow compatibility with mult-layer multiisamples created with MPC at the occasion.
Multi-layer multi-velocity is a great feature. Please add to our wish list thread on the forum (pretty sure it is there already). We very regularly harvest new features from that thread.
This is very cool. One question-- so there's no looping at all within a multisample program? I want to create a choir-type sound that might sustain for a long time. Should I loop it in a DAW and then export, so I end up with a lrge number of 30 second files? Or something like that?
@1010music To follow up on a previous question (that I have asked a few months ago), I am wondering if it would be possible to create a multisample drum kit (on the pad view) that would only contain one instrument per pad with up to 16 “levels” of velocity. In other words, in order to create and play more realistic acoustic drums or more expressive electronic ones, is it possible to have only one multisampled drum instrument (e.g., a snare, a kick, hi-hats, tom, etc.) per pad so as to trigger the latter from the pad view (rather than the key view) with a velocity responsive/enabled MIDI controllers such as the Launchpad-X to trigger these multisampled drums with multiple levels of velocity (once again up to 16 levels per pads). I have not seen any information in the manual or on RUclips that shows if this would be possible. In any case, thank you for your time 1010music and your great work! John
I just purchased one of these about 2 months ago. I love the sound and design overall. But I am not finding the right side touchscreen 4 buttons cut, copy paste... Also, I'm not able to locate the granular function. Am I missing something? Thanks
First, make sure you are using one of the most recent firmware - 1.4.3 or 1.5.1. When you turn the lower right knob clockwise, the blue velocity slider will disappear and reveal the buttons you are looking for. In the waveform overview, select the mode button at the top left of the screen. Change to granular.
Is there a file naming convention that allows BB to detect the root note from the filename? Like piano-c2.wav, piano-e2.wav. etc? Can you also load multisample formats like SF2 or SFZ or even ESX sample formats?
the blackbox works with wav files, exclusively. Those other formats are not recognized. We save the rootnote and velocity info inside the meta tags (wavtags) inside the file. The blackbox does not read filenames for pitch or velocity.
might be worth considering for a future update. There are a lot of existing sample libraries in these formats that you would open up BB to use with very easily. In addition some DAWs (like Bitwig) use these formats to export multisamples created within them. Also quite a few open source implementations already exist that could maybe incorporated without having to implement everything from scratch. Like LinuxSampler, SFizz and LiquidSFZ.
Which tools are recommended for saving the root note into the sample wave file? To clarify: I know it can be done on the BB itself. But is there any software on PC or Mac that allows this?
I've been using Endless WAV, a free, simple .exe utility that allows for setting root notes sample by sample or, more interestingly, in bulk, by reading the filename and scanning for note names or numbers. It does other stuff too.
I recorded some tones from my Klangauge (sort of handpan) which I would like to use as multi sample on the blackbox. Can someone tell me how I have to name te files to get that working?
load each sample to a pad. Set the Root Note parameter. Then, with all of those samples in a single folder (no other files - all root notes set), select Load All from the File menu. Voila`
By any chance, would it be possible to map the blackbox sampler to an electronic drum to play, create, and record multi-sample/tonal acoustic or electronic drums sounds/kits (while also mapping the hi-hat pedal controller to the decay of the hi-hat samples for instance) !?
In other words, by using the MIDI learn function of the Blackbox sampler, could the drum pads and hi-hat pedal of an electronic drum be used to trigger multi-sampled acoustic or electronic drum samples that one could load into the Blackbox?
Mostly -- kinda. You can set the MIDI note each pad responds to. This will allow your E-drum kit to trigger any sound inside the blackbox. In order to trigger a multisample, you must send different pitches. Another option is to use a slicer pad, load the wav files you want to trigger, then use MIDI Velocity (for example) to switch samples. This works great.
@@1010music Thank you for the much appreciated reply! And what about the second part of my question on mapping the midi CC (#4) of an electronic hi-hat pedal (opened to close) to control the decay of hi-hat (multi-/sliced) sample(s)? Would this also be possible?
So confused if polyphony is still 4 voices per pad. I have read that there is a 24 voice pool, a 64 voice pool and I think I understand that that is the polyphony of all samples on the device playing at once. But I have also read that there is 8 voices now per pad, and also seemingly that you can choose the amount of voices per pad?
"Based on the root notes defined in the wav files" - Is this defined in the WAV file metadata or in the filename? If it's in the WAV file metadata, is there a simple way to add that?
@@1010music And for blank notes : a sample with silence. I bought it recently, and concerning MIDI and notes, it misses a simple silly stuff : the abilité to select the keyzone for each Sample PAD (at least Single note). Or selecting for example only from C3 to C4. It would be so easy to implement that ! And would avoid using a MIDI keyboard that support splitting MIDI channels and presets
This was exactly the tutorial I was looking for to get around the 16 pad/sound limit that initially imposed on the Blackbox.
Just bought one. So happy to be part of the 1010 community!

keep em coming!

Awesome, are we going to get an export stem function?
Others have asked for this, too. Please be sure to join our forum and add this to the wish list (if you have not already).
1010music same! And will do
Absolutely the same here! Please realize stem export!
How does BB know the root note of the bulk samples loaded with "load all" function?
It's saved in each wav file.
if it is not saved in the WAV file the blackbox will load the samples in alphabetical order, chromatically, starting at C2.
1010music 1010music thanks for clarifying. Btw it would be cool to also parse the end of the file so as to support multiple velocity layers :)

You can do that. Try the slicer and step through slices with velocity.
Nice info... Does it work with other control devices such as Tenori-on ?
It should. You should only be limited by The Tenori-on MIDI implementation.

Absolutely!

Is it possible to set exclusion groups for some of the notes in the pad? Like for choking hi hats in drum multi samples?
Yes! there are four exclusive groups for this purpose. EXCL groups work between pads. Closed HH on pad 2 can choke Open HH on pad 1, for example.
@@1010music thanks! I'm not sure how you can set it for the multi samples once it's loaded. Is there something I'm missing?

Excl Group is in the CONF settings tab

SampleRobot has an option for $89 USD that can handle this, and a lot more.

The 4 voice limit is now out of date. Newer versions of the firmware offer a voice pool with up to 16 voices per pad.
Can I control the Release time via midi CC? If not, please consider this a feature request. :D
Currently, no. But please add this to our wish list thread as that is where we start when building new features, updates, etc.

"Based on the root notes defined in the wav files" - Is this defined in the WAV file metadata or in the filename? If it's in the WAV file metadata, is there a simple way to add that?
Worth noting that this program considers note 48 = C2, but blackbox (and most other MIDI devices) call note 48 = C3.
"in the wav files" = metadata. There are two different references for Middle C.
Can we assign manually each sample to a note within this mode ? Can we set différent ADSR for each sample of the multisample preset ?
1 ADSR per pad. You can edit the Root Note of a sample to place its original pitch on any key. Playing higher or lower will transpose from that point.

How many voices of polyphony?
