  • Chris Bailey has been obsessed with the subject of productivity for more than a decade. In this talk, he argues that productivity doesn't have to feel cold and corporate-and that it’s possible to get more done every day without hating the process. Drawing from a decade's worth of research, as well as his yearlong productivity project, Chris argues that the best way to become more productive is to manage our time, attention, and energy better. In addition to sharing this more human approach to productivity, Chris concludes by providing 5 practical ways we can all get more done every day.
    Chris has experimented with every productivity technique under the sun including what it’s like to live like a caveman! His latest book "The Productivity Project" is based on his innovative research and underlines the claim that Chris ""might be the most productive man you’d ever hope to meet” (TED talks).
    When Chris graduated University, he received two full-time job offers, but decided to decline them both to dedicate a full year of his life to exploring his passion: productivity. Over the past decade his experimentation continued and his work has received national and international media attention from The New York Times, Fortune, Fast Company, Lifehacker, New York Magazine, and countless others.     1. Plan 3 tasks(and only 3) to finish each day: it forces you to prioritize and focus on what matters
    2. Do one thing at a time: so we work deliberately on one work instead of multiple shallow works.
    3. Get the most out of your potential energy: eating well (putting good fuel into our body), exercise, sleep (exchange time for energy), ...
    4. Stay offline: our normal tasks take twice the time to finish when we have access to the Internet (because of procrastination)
    5. Daydream: let the mind wander to connect the dots in your mind

      you forgot about his insanely important point about meditating often (his schedule is 35 hours a week) to increase your focus and have a lack of stress - in fact, when he stopped meditating, he found his productivity levels were lower, despite having more time to work without it

    Congratulations, Chris! You are demonstrating self actualization (essence of being in process) as part of your productive accomplishment (usually measured by external growth, yield, and development).

    I don't know what every other comment person is trying to achive by being productive but if it's about doing my everyday job more easily and happily, then the video works. I found from my experience by being a bit alert, thinking ahead what's important to do and avoiding 'I'm busy' attitude actually gets the things done. And meditation certainly helps to control those emotions (busy-ness/hurrying, attention to moments).

    awesome talk. I have been reading Chris's emails on productivity for a good few months now and I find his approach both insightful and practical. It's nice to have a little nudge from him to keep reminding ourselves not to go back to bad habits - my least productive behaviour!

    Something that bewildered me about most other advice on productivity is that the methods are just so mechanic, it tells you hustle like there’s no tomorrow, to segregate all your daily activities into orderly bits and always have absolute control over your behaviours. Like, where tf did all these people find that willpower and energy from to follow through all of that for long? Is it drugs? Needless to say none of those tips stuck on me, but I feel this guy’s perspective might fit me better. I’ll give meditation a shot ;u;

      Along the lines of your question, I had looked up the definition of "productive" and noticed that as an adjective the meaning depended on what it was modifying; e.g. a productive farm could be measured by the quantity and/or quality of harvest. On the other hand, a productive career might be synonymous with wealth, creativity, or personal satisfaction - depending upon one's values. Thus it seems from the title that this speaker's measure of value is indicated by the essence: "human", which could vary from one to another, but yields satisfaction correlated to the individual's values. The personal awareness and value of reflection would be a feature of the meditation time and isolation aspects of his exploration. I liked your question a lot because it requires us to consider that productivity involves focus on both being and doing. Thanks for contributing ... Good day!

    Will someone please help me, I thought I saw a TED talk video some years ago in which a young guy talks about his experiments with productivity, and I think this is they guy, but I thought the video was longer, and that there was a part in which he showed a picture of a very messy apartments from a 10 day isolation experiment. It is not this particular video, but did he maybe do another version of this presentation some time before this one?

    Productivity, focus motivation are linked to the brain biochemistry, hormone balance , appropriate level of precisly minerals and vitamines. Lack of focus, productivity , motivation are symptoms of given problems related to the brain biochemistry unbalance, lack of crucial minerals that the brain need to work properly , hormone unbalance etc
    Usually, it is necessary, dozens of analysis to identify the roots of the problems .Myself using an artificial intelligence programme, i am able to discover if an employee has productivity , focus motivation problems through a simple blood analysis, in which I use to follow just 3 parameters. All explanations that are out there does not help The situation is similar to that in which a Lamborghini has no fuel oil, lubricant, and water, and thousand people are out there teaching the driver how to win a race.

    turning off the internet is definitely the first step...meditation is not necessary though...reading is better

    Fatal Error: You researched and pushed yourself to establish new habits. By that you destroyed your already in place routines and killed productivity by it.
    Further mistake: Internalizing a habit to wake up early takes much more than three month; first you need to adapt and second you have to live it so it gets really internalized and yields the results you intended.
    And...some many more flaws...
    But you stated also many great points! So thumps up.

    Good talk. There are many inspirational points in the space. However, his definition of productivity is ill defined and vague. He says that to be productive you only need to carry out behaviours associated with your dayly objective regardless of the significance of the objective. This is very ill, non-motivational, and vague detention. Furthermore, objectives achieved during the day should be valuable both to the person and to those around him, and not some nonsense objectives like binge watching a series on Netflix. That's called relaxation and entertainment. I personally define productivity as engaging in challenging behaviours/works through out the day that are aligned with the goal of striving to be come my idealself and it is measured be how much time I spend doing quality work.

      Actually no. If you want to meditate, study zen Buddhism. That has a much better understanding of meditation than Islam does. To add, a lot of the verses you referred to have faith as a focal point, which is not strictly speaking meditation.
