    Not in in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
    Not in Rolling Stone magazine's Top 20 Slide Guitar Player list!
    I mean...? Ry is a true virtuoso who plays with heart and soul. Amnd he's a really funny, generous guy.
    Rock on Ry! ☆☆☆☆☆

    The 1972 Ry Cooder with the hippy bandana - that's how I first saw him when we overlapped briefly as students at the same college. He was sweet, shy, and devastatingly darling. Not yet famous, but he had a rep as a good guitar player. I tried to fling myself at him, but he was wisely having none of my shenanigans. I sigh for the fish who got away... But luckily for Ry, in my case, he dodged a bullet!

      Doug Stamper 20 or so years ago I got a Rolling Stones box set. Something like 200 songs. It had all the usual hits, and quite a few id never heard (I was only around 20 at the time). I had never heard of memo from turner. The first time I heard it, the slide guitar absolutely blew my mind. It has remained my favorite stones song to this day.

      What I find interesting is the fact that, with computers, programs like Pro Tools, new types of synthesizers; one can imitate so many instruments including the voice in so many ways.
      I have a young relative-not to plug him but this ties in--named Aaron Leutwiler who is a percussionist besides his day job setting up restaurants. Anyway you can see his invention along with tutorials on You Tube. (Again, I am not spamming but he came to Puerto Rico and greatly impressed me.)
      In conclusion, young musicians with initiative, creativity and great talent should be able to work at music full time. (Think of how Robert Fripp (I will check to see if I have his name correctly) from King Crimsom (with David Bowie on Heroes)--did some amazing things with a guitar hooked up to a synthesizer. Check it out if you don't know what I am taking about.)

    • @RobertLeutwiler555
      @RobertLeutwiler555 8 лет назад +1

      Not to get carried away but I find this discussion to be so useful--I read somewhere that all instruments really come from the human voice. Of course organs can imitate many other instruments.
      Even percussion which may also have been used by early man to sound the alarm, imitate the rhythm or cadence of voices. I recently participated in a drum circle in Middletown, CT and was amazed to see how people of varying levels of skill could play together on many types of percussion. We even ended up in 5/4 time at one point.
      It showed me how important what we call the "clave" or basic rhythm is. You play the clave hard and everyone can start improvising, singing, dancing etc.

    • @Mamaofthehooligan
      @Mamaofthehooligan 8 лет назад +2

      +Robert Leutwiler music is basic a fabric if you will it weaves together all aspects of life the daily motion of rhythm is in everything all around & encompassing are very breathe it's nature,it's life,it's all music. it's in all of our everything that we are .

    • @RobertLeutwiler555
      @RobertLeutwiler555 8 лет назад +1

      I could add that life is poetry, art, music, design, color, form, etc. Poetry is music if it has any value but also painting and cooking to a certain extent as well as nature. Of course no artist can realize all these values together. Kandinsky and Picasso work in styles totally in opposition to photo realism and surrealism (Miro Klee Calder Dali above all.)
      I respect Walt Whitman and love Bob Dylan but they are not lyrical. Neither is early Muddy Waters or Lightning Hopkins while Mississippi and many older blues great are (were) flowing streams of righteousness.

      I agree with you, Becks plays all kinds of stuff these days just because he can! i.e technically brilliant but musically poor. For example Page is not technically as good as Beck but musically he is untouchable. I am a musician and I admire technical ability but at the end of the day music is to be listened to so I don't care how brilliant the musician is - just what they can produce that I like

    What is the composition right at the beginning? I've looked all over for it. I discovered Ry after walking out of a theatre in New York telling myself I needed to learn about the musician who wrote and played the score to Southern Comfort. I didn't know much about music. Still don't, but I know what I like. I finally got to see him perform up in Napa nearly 40 years later. High on my bucket list!
