On this episode, the History Guy talks about two forgotten stories of the naval front of the Great War. First, he talks about the first naval battle of the war, which took place on a large lake in east Africa. Then he tells the story of U-156 and the only German attack on the American mainland in WWI - the battle of Orleans.
This is original content based on research by The History Guy. Images in the Public Domain are carefully selected and provide illustration. As very few images of the actual event are available in the Public Domain, images of similar objects and events are used for illustration.
All events are portrayed in historical context and for educational purposes. No images or content are primarily intended to shock and disgust. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Non censuram.

Good morning everyone! I love the podcasts. I've only recently known of them, and am going back as I can, to listen to them. I've heard most of the original segments that are played. But getting to hear the additional comments/ commentary on them is fantastic. I especially like hearing from Mother of History Guy. That's a real treat. It's like hearing a cross between my "Nana," and mom's stories. (My mother was born in '52, her mother in '32, I beleive. Niether are with us any longer.)
Thanks again to everyone involved!
The AFRICAN QUEEN.Thanks history guy for sharing history that deserves to be remembered.
Episode:nice
Germany had several southwest Pacific Island colonies pre-WWI such as the Solomon Islands, which also fell quickly.
Nice.
I had geard if these battles, i am a history buff, but this is very detailed. Love it!
Good morning!
It should be the history of the number 69.
What was 69 before the Arabic numbers? Complicated.
@@i-a-g-r-e-e-----f-----jo--b I suppose the position would have represented a sort of ménage à trois, in Roman Numerals.
LIX
In Babylonian/Sumerian, it'd be an outright orgy.
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought Coronel, Dogger Bank and the Falklands would be what was featured, since the U-Boat convoy battles, Gallipoli (7 capital ships were sunk, 5 RN and 2 French) and Jutland are well remembered. Kudos for discussing U-156, which I didn't know about.
One good topic for THG would be the odyssey of the KM light cruiser Emden in the south Atlantic & Indian oceans, which is a saga in itself (hint hint).

"Warshippy"...God, I love you guys!
Thank you
The WW1 war in the east is so much more interesting than in the West. Battles of maneuver. You should read the series of books by Brit Buttar on the Eastern Front. Each book covers one year. Much bloodier than the war in the West
69.... EEEEEHHHH
