I had an English teach in High School who was in the anti-submarine patrol. He manned a blimp, flying off the coast of California. And he was good at his job. No ships were lost in his patrol area in the entire war.
In Santa Ana, CA, the Marines were using the old airship hangers for their helicopter training. Entire formations could take off and land simultaneously from within the hangers.
Wonderful episode!! My father owned Memphis Airships for a few years before his health gave away. I have a original photo of the USS Akron in Lakehurst about 1000 feet off the grass taken from an aircraft. Thank you THG wonderful episode!!
As someone who is interested in both aviation and history (and thus, aviation history), I agree that the age of airships deserves to be better remembered.
Was stationed at NAS Moffett in the mid-80's -- Hanger One is still impressive (and on the National register -- Hindenberg was coming to the US for helium
That's physically impossible. There are ideas for elevated launch-platforms, but a blimp or balloon can never get you above the atmosphere. And then you have to achieve orbital-velocity anyway, which is like 97% of your fuel cost. Getting to altitude takes an insignificant amount of the fuel required. You gotta go sideways REAL fast.
@@ErynnWilson Oh. Okay. Well I'm pretty sure only Venus has been talked about for balloons, and calling those ideas "proposed missions" seems like a crazy stretch to me. I know people have been talking about it for decades but are there any actual mission proposals you can link to?
I wish we could bring back dirigibles, not as air-ships; but as a newer 'green-er' spaceship using the 'fuel' as buoyancy & rocket motors for the final leg into space.
95%+ of the fuel cost to orbit isn't going up, it's going sideways, and to get the thrust required you need the fuel under high pressures, which screws your buoyancy.
I prefer these when I can see him tell the story I found it more interesting to hear him and see the expressions on his face. I don’t like it as much when you can’t see him and all I do is hear him. It’s not as exciting it’s not as intriguing please go back to the old way.

My father was in Lighter than Air in the Navy during WWII . THE airships were used for ASW along the coast
One of my new favorite topics, well ive always appreciated zeaplins, but you all rekindled it.

My sensors detect steampunks in the room... Greetings.
Good morning everyone.
Fascinating steam punk topic.

*I ❤️ AIRSHIPS*
From History to the Future: There are several proposed missions to Venus, Mars, Titan, Etc utilizing blimp-like and balloon spacecraft.
That's physically impossible.

@@JustOneAsbesto a spacecraft sends it to the atmosphere of said planet or moon.

Google is finally restoring Hanger One at Moffett field in Mtn. View, CA
I went on a hot air Baloon ride inside Hanger One at Moffett Field at an Air Show.
Sorry to see there was no video
Never come first before🙂
Grats bro, I love you! Have a blessed and peaceful day friend!
@@Jasonronsteinberger Thank you, my day was made when I saw the notification🙂
