    • 11 Year Old Killer Sho...
Singing legend Conway Twitty was born on September 1, 1933. However, the Mississippi native was born with the name Harold Jenkins.
When he was 24 years old, Jenkins decided he needed a stage name. There are several stories of how he decided on the name Conway Twitty. The first story claims that he was simply looking a map and his eyes landed on the small towns of Conway, Arkansas and Twitty, Texas. Another story is that a restaurant manager, that Jenkins frequented, begged Jenkins to use his name, Conway Twitty, insisting that the name was catchy and memorable.
Twitty’s musical career began as a rock ‘n’ roll singer. In 1958, Conway Twitty released his first hit, “It’s Only Make Believe.” In the song, Conway Twitty’s voice led many audiences to believe that it was actually Elvis Presley singing. Twitty had many other rock ‘n’ roll hits such as “Danny Boy” and “Lonely Blue Boy.”
“Hello Darlin’,” Twitty’s first, and biggest country song was released in 1970. His songs are known for the deep male voice which Twitty possessed. Throughout his career, he released over 50 songs that reached the top spot on the Country Music charts. Twitty won 2 Grammy Awards in his storied career. . His 55 No. 1 singles are an amazing feat in the annals of the recording industry. Twitty sold more than 50 million records, delivered thousands of live performances, and achieved over 100 major awards. “Next In Line” became his first country No. 1. Twitty performed three decades of country music including: “Hello Darlin’,” “Goodbye Time,” “You’ve Never Been This Far Before,” “Linda On My Mind,” “I’d Love To Lay You Down,” “Tight Fittin’ Jeans,” “That’s My Job.” Conway performed a duet with the top female vocalist of that time, Loretta Lynn and the duo became the most awarded male/female duet in history recording with songs like “After The Fire Is Gone,” “Lead Me On,” and “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.
Conway was married at the age of 20. However, the marriage only lasted a year. His first wife gave birth to his son, Michael. In 1956, he married Mickey Medley. Medley gave birth to 3 more children. The couple stayed together until 1984. 3 years later, Twitty married again. This marriage lasted until his death.
On June 4, 1993, Twitty became ill while performing at the Jim Stafford Theatre in Branson, Missouri. He collapsed on his tour bus after the show and was rushed to a hospital. He was rushed into surgery, but died of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, in the early hours of the following morning at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri at the age of 59. Loretta Lynn, who frequently was his chart-making duet partner, was at the hospital because her husband, Mooney, a.k.a. Doo, was recovering from heart surgery, and saw Twitty briefly as he entered the hospital. His last studio album, Final Touches, was released two months later. Four months after Twitty's death, George Jones included a cover version of "Hello Darlin'" on his album High-Tech Redneck.
Twitty was buried at Sumner Memorial Gardens in Gallatin, Tennessee in a red granite vault under his birth name Harold L. Jenkins. There are spaces reserved next to him for his wife and his son Michael.

I was just watching your video of The Great CONWAY TWITTY and where he is buried. I already knew this and have always wanted to comment. I was so upset, saddened, and just couldn't believe he was no longer with us. Now the time has passed but I still can't take away those same feelings. I can still hear his music, his Wonderful Voice, I get those goose bumps, it's like he is right beside me. I am so sorry there wasn't MORE DONE FOR THIS GIANT AND LEGEND OF COUNTRY MUSIC. HE WAS SO DESERVING OF MUCH MUCH MORE!!! EVEN FOR HIM MORE COULD NEVER BE ENOUGH. FOR MYSELF HIS MUSIC, HIS ONE OF A KIND VOICE WILL NEVER EVER BE GONE...I LOVE YOU CONWAY. R.I.P, YOU ARE SO MISSED,but YOUR MUSIC WILL NEVER DIE. REST MY LOVE ON YOU AWHILE...❤🙏🙏🙏🙏❤

I love country music and Conway Twitty was one of the first country singers that drew me to it. The first time I ever listened to country music and fell in love with it was in 1976 when I was working at a nursing home in Chicago. All the radios in the residents' rooms were always playing country songs (I think the aids were putting it on). Wow, I didn't know he got his name from two cities. Very interesting. Country singers are just down-home kind of people and I think that's why I like them so much. What a beautiful mausoleum he is in. It's nice that he is low enough for his fans to see his grave easily. Glad you found a place for your rock 😊 RIP Conway.

My dad (now 88) was a big fan of old school country. So when I was a kid I heard a lot of Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Anne Murray, Charlie Rich, Barbara Mandrell, Merle Haggard, Oak Ridge Boys, Statler Brothers, etc.
While growing into my teen/young adult years, my musical tastes leaned more towards pop music, Soul/R& B, and rock. For many years I never listened to country music; but now that I'm in my 50's, I've been gravitating towards listening to the classic country songs I heard as a child. I don't care for the more modern country that became popular in the 90's though today's music. One of my favorite Conway Twitty duets with Loretta Lynn is "You're the reason our kids are ugly." 😂 They had such a great rapport. 💛

One of my top 3 country singers of all time. I'm from Kentucky and I'm all about good 70s and 80s country music. One of my home state Icons Loretta Lynn had many songs with Conway.

He actually died in Springfield, Missouri. He and Loretta Lyn had been playing in Branson.
