  • Just wanted to show you how I fixed my broken thermostat. You can buy a universal thermostat to replace your broken one. In my case there was only one available through amazon. The delivery was going to take 4 -6 weeks and I needed this freezer fixed right away. Hope you find this video helpful. Please subscribe to my channel.
    This is an update for you guys 2 weeks following the fix:
    We made the thermostat work but I find that the compressor is constantly running without a break. This could cause a problem in the long run.. I would recommend that you get a replacement thermostat and use this as a temporary measure. What we have done in this video was to bypass the functionality of a thermostat.
    I figured this out as I was adjusting the temperature control knob but it didn't make any difference with the temperature as I turned the knob up or down..
    I would still recommend that you replace your thermostat and use these instructions as a temporary measure until you get a new one. I will post the website address where I got the thermostat for so cheap in the next couple of days.

    Thank you, our 4 yr old chest freezer broke while I was out of town last weekend. My husband bought a new one. But I hate to throw something like this away. I unplugged the unit. And removed the glue like substance off of the screw for the fine adjustment. I did not bother take the thermostat out of remove the connections including the ground from the front control . I figured it will either work or not when I adjusted the screw. After turning the screw clockwise about 1/2 a turn. I plugged it in and wa-la. it works. The light bulb is burned out, but I do not really care about that. We set a shot glass with frozen water in our freezer and a quarter on top. If we should ever be out of town and the quarter ends up at the bottom of the glass, we know it the food completely thawed out and is bad. Should the power go out etc.
    Thank you again,
    my sister will appreciate being gifted a perfectly good chest freezer.

    I spent 5 hours calling repair shop, the supplier of my refrigerator and looking around on the internet for a replacement parts. Did not find anything and all the repair shop told me to scrap the refrigerator.
    I did exactly what you did and it work like new now.
    If I had found the video sooner, I would have saved a couple of hours.
    Thanks a lot.

    For those looking for QUICK a temp fix, you can connect the two wire from the thermostat and then plug the freezer into a timer. 1/2hr on 1hr off if you are not going into it alot

    Thank you... it fixed mine ! I had to install a new starter, due to freezer not starting, but after replacing the starter, the dadn compressor would not shut off and kept freezing the suction line. I did your thermostat trick and the freezer is operating like new. A big thank you !

    Great video and being in Canada too I can "feel your pain" when it comes down to getting replacement parts. S&H and taxes and duty and all sorts of other BS makes it unfairly expensive to get stuff fixed here. Anyway, enough ranting. I had my chest freezer stop working out like this BUT my freezer has a "flash freeze" mode which forces the compressor to run constantly. In effect, bypassing the thermostat completely so I don't have to mess with that until I get the replacement unit - if I can do so affordably. To all those other viewers I suggest that if you use the method in this video and the compressor runs constantly afterwards, use a mechanical appliance timer to turn the freezer off after about 4 hours of running then back on for another 4 hours, etc for a full 24 hours. This should let the compressor cool down and wil "buy you some time" until you get a proper repair done.

    Hi. Great video on how to check the thermostat on a small freezer chest. I am having difficulty with my upright Kenmore freezer. It's a smaller one but does not freeze. I've checked out the relays and the compressor and they seem alright. Where would I find the thermostat on my freezer? I have a feeling that the thermostat is not functioning. Thank you for your help.

    i dont know if I can do it but it sure looks fixable. It is certainly not worth buying a new thermostat since my frig is over 20 years old. Of course, the problem gets complex because the cost of getting rid of the old frig is north of 200 dollars. Sure looks like a fix is better than trashing it.

    I have a very old freezer. Is it really necessary to take out the temp sensor to check the continuity of the thermostat? I’m just now getting into this.

    • @jactvideos3627
      @jactvideos3627  4 года назад

      It depends on your thermostat set up, if your thermostat cable has enough length left outside sensor area then you don't need to take it out. I didn't have much room to perform the test and fix the problem without having to take it out.

  • @1977michaelsmith

    Did you test the thermostat with the dial turned on or off? I tested the thermostat in the on position and it is working. I tested all the other parts including the start relay and overload protector and they too are working but the freezer still does not get cold???

    Hey there - I have a very similar thermostat (4-35940-001). I took it out to test it with my multimeter and dropped it. now it's in a few pieces. Can you show a video on how to put it together? The inside has a spring with screw threads.

    You should not install the wires backwards,,,, one wire is load the other is marked C because the voltage must flow in that direction if not you will encounter a problem, C is the hot wire which must flow threw the filament for proper long life function of your freezer.

    • @andreramirez3843
      @andreramirez3843 Год назад

      I don't know all the ins and outs, but the thermostat is basically an on-off switch for when the freezer. It turns on the compressor when it is too hot, then when it reaches the proper temperature, it shuts off the compressor. The screw is essentially an adjustment screw.
