Some people seem to forget that RC like most hobbies is about enjoying yourself, so the right use for RC cars is whatever gives you the most enjoyment. Regardless of if its building cars to look good on a shelf, or take out and drive or a bashing a ready to run the object is the same to enjoy yourself :-) Personally I probably enjoy building them and upgrading them most, but taking them and using them and find out how upgrades effect the way the cars drive is also something I have been enjoying a lot of late as well. I dont take my cars out intending to break anything but when my crap driving results in hitting a fence or tree I see that as an opportunity hunt down some upgrades or a new body and rebuild the car. But thats just how I get the most enjoyment out of my RC cars, it up to other people to work out what makes the hobby fun for them.
We had high expectations due the success 511 had in 2009 and 2010. 502X was supposed to be a shaft driven 511. But it got a tough start. Complaints on the ackerman/steering lock, camber mounts, position of shock towers and top decks. A lot of mods to make it better could be found on forums (oople among others). Lee Martin posted tips on how to improve steering. Rudebits made that carbon camber mount that is mounted on your 502X and replaces the stock plastic ones. I made 2mm spacers to give the shocks a more vertical shock movement. Lee did TQ at the Euros, but In the end though, team drivers went back to 511. Thats why the 503 is belt driven. Lee drove the "503 proto" at the 2013 worlds. Sadly Tamiya decided to "reduce operations in the offroad market" in december 2013 and therefore didnt continue his contract. So we never got to see the 503 in top level racing.
This a Tamiya buggy I can understand. Built to race. And now gets to live out it’s life as a shelf queen. Love it. I think I might of left the original decals on if they meant something to me, but I agree it looks even better now. 👍🏻
Love the history of buggy’s like this one, that have been raced and used and that have a story to them, i have a couple if rc’s like that. I have an rc10b3 that was raced at national level , now I have it and I race it but at vintage meets . It’s cool things like that
@@TAMIYALegends haha mate this hobby is so diverse its really is awesome! Something for everyone that me be Runners, shelfers, nib, builders its bloody fantastic!
That belongs on a track Glen! Hahah! It would be nice to see how it performs on the track, but your absolutely right, it's yours and you can do what you want with it. Nice car.
Love the passion of the non rant, nowt wrong with a nice drive and then retired to the shelf. I don't even bother cleaning mine as the mud looks great 👌
Love that shell, it's like Egress meets Rising storm. And such a cool design internally. I think the next step for Tamiya is a DF04, and would love it to borrow some stylings off this bad boy
Gotta love a TRF buggy, they are all super cool! Personally, if I had one, I'd definitely run it, but as this one is yours it's entirely up to you what you do with it. Great video as always mate👍👍
@@TAMIYALegends You can strap shorty to it. using velcros & cable tie the velcros to the chassis. That's how I am doing it and running my 502X at our local pure dirt off road track. The chassis upgrade kit (the top deck) is more for carpet track.
That looks a very capable buggy, it would be nice to see how it performs on a little track and I don’t think I’d be able to resist running it but as you said it’s your buggy and do what you want with it. One thing for sure is it’s in very good hands now 👍👍
I bought a 501x today, never run, couple of upgrades, very hot brushed setup, with another very hot brushed speedo thrown in the deal. Thats good cause I have got an orion revolution motor 12t coming. I almost didnt get it. But I did=)
What a beast, absolutely love it Glenn👍 good thing is you don't have to worry about trying to replace the drive belts on this model, which is becoming increasingly impossible or very expensive for most of the older RC's nowadays. Also love the paint scheme not that I'm bias or anything lol👍👍
Nice buggy! Yeah I wouldn't mind a 502x myself, but yeah, prices. I remember reading around the time these were being raced that the original steering set up/geometry was awful. The fix as far as I know was to install the 501x steering set up. That's just what I've heard.
Oh Glenn that car is a thing of pure beauty!! The carbon and alloy chassis is so pretty I want to lick it!! HaHa!! No seriousely though G' ( hope you don't mind me calling you G' instead of Glenn please mate ?? ) I really really love the TRF 201/501 etc etc etc!! I drool over pictures of them in my many many copies of Radio Race Car International / Model Cars magazines!! Just stunningly beautiful mate!! Thanks G' !! Wes, Liverpool UK.
@@TAMIYALegends surely a couple of cheap lipo's from hobbyking would not cost much? They don't have to be car specific. I personally would love to see it at least in driving condition, a few laps on the grass somewhere is something many people would be very happy to see!
Cool to see my photos in your video 😁
It’s just so cool to have that little bit of history with this car David, your pictures have really added to my appreciation of it 😊😊😊

Yeah totally agree Andy, it just makes them that extra bit special 😊👊🏻
I've got a NIB 501 in the shed. I like looking at it every now and then
Haha nothing wrong with that my friend 😊👊🏻
Special to shelf a car thats done its service! Lovely looking buggy Glenn!

Lovely paint job on that!

Morning Glenn nothing beats waking up to a beautiful 4wd buggy 🤩
Haha thanks Wade 😊😊😊
G'day Glenn mate wow now that's a race car even looks so fast sitting still awesome car mate 👍
Thanks buddy I’m over the moon to have this in the collection 🤩
Glad you like it. When I saw it for sale I knew it had to go to you. I have it’s brother (501) from the same driver in my collection.
Keith you've done it again 😍. I use to race the 501x when it first hit the market. Was an amazing time for tamiya releasing such a top contender
When the collection gets too big then we call it a museum 🤣😂RC museum your the man for the job 👍👍
Haha hey it works for me Ian 🤣👊🏻
I like learning about these TRF's 👍🏼
Thank you my friend, that might be it on the TRF stuff for awhile 😅👊🏻

Thanks Barry I’d probably give it a run if I had the LiPo saddle packs but not buying them just for a quick spin 🤣👊🏻

Epic car.

Thanks Matt 😊👊🏻
I almost bought one of these back around 2014 I think it was. Still regret not picking one up.
Yeah there getting harder to find now 🤕👊🏻

Thanks Wayne tbh it’s the cost of LiPo saddle packs that puts me off running it 🤕🤕🤕
Looks awesome Glenn very nice indeed

Looks great, one I’d like, but probably no chance. Thought it was a giveaway when I saw competition 😜
Haha not a chance my friend 🤣👊🏻
The 501 shell I feel is the most iconic with the 503 chassis being the nicest imo. The 501 and 511 are almost identical though to the 503
Absolutely completely agree with you, that 501 body set is very unique 😊👊🏻

Yeah I believe this car has had that mod done 🧐🤷🏼♂️
Could there be a TRF based on the new TD 2/4 platform.
Hmmm interesting the one thing with Tamiya is, you never know what’s coming 🤣🤷🏼♂️
What does the VG stand for GLENN on the decals?

Totally agree about not running it if you dont want to its what you want out of it and makes you happy. I wouldnt run it either
Thanks for watching my friend 😊👊🏻
Every Team Xray XB4 ever made is that motor layout.
Oh wow thanks that’s interesting Mark 😊👊🏻
Haha...suck it up! You are so right.
Your car, you do with it whatever you want.
I love it, only one thing wrong with it...wrong owner...😜😜👍
Cheers!
Haha thanks for watching Ruud 😊👊🏻
Pretty big jump from the Leonis to this. Always thought the Leonis was the average Joe version but the two seem worlds apart after watching that.
Yeah they are completely different tbh, 4wd shaft driven is about all they share with each other 🤣👊🏻
Any item, that you can't get anymore should be preserved.
That’s exactly how I look at it 🤩👊🏻
Are you going to put electrics in it ?
I very much doubt it as I’d need to buy LiPo saddle packs to run it, just too expensive for a couple of runs my friend 🤕

I kinda wish tamiya do modern 2wd buggy. team AE is close.. but wrong shade of alloy blue. :)
Yeah hopefully it’s something they might pick up again in the future 😇🙏🏻🙏🏻
First!!!!
Thank you 😊😊😊
Let's see...🤔 this video was probably shot a month ago...🤔 I bet you have already got a 501 in the post...🤔😂🤣😜
Haha 🤣🤣🤣
No honestly there’s nothing on the way to me 😅👊🏻
I think it should be pronounced "Lip Oh" not "Lie Poh" because they are Lithium Polymer batteries and that's how you pronounce Lithium.
Thanks Neil 🤓👊🏻
You have a lot of my drool to clean up on your channel. Sorry Glen
Haha I certainly do my friend 🤣👊🏻
do you spend any money on your partner? lol
