More brands should do a stock rear mudguard like that one. It cost so little to throw in there given how expensive bikes are these days, and it just makes cleaning a bit easier. There's often a bit tricky places to get to as well as a mudguard prevents pebbles chipping the paint.

I think it's a good bike for all rides. I've never ridden a Merida MTB but it looks like a good geometry.

Good question but we don't weigh bikes unless they're specifically built to be lightweight. As long as climbing geometry is sorted and you're running good gear, thats what matters going up.
It's a rule in UK and Oz to have the front brake on the right hand side. I tried it for a while, not working for me.

Speaking of chips in the paint that top of the head tube has many. Is that a used frame?
It probably is, as the steering tube also had a chip. Also the cassette is clearly a used one.
Maybe I missed it, but a component list would be lovely, as I am curious about the rims of this build. Couldn't figure them out exactly. What manufacturer and model is it?

The front chain ring could be even smaller,for better speed..I just hate this 1×11 gearing system. If only front chain ring was bigger. Nope small asf
1 x 12 speed. It's Sram X01. 32t front and 10t - 52t back is a quite sufficient range for 90% terrain... I never want again any front derailleur on my bike.
