  • Stankdog is one of the only guys in the world that is still qualifying for AMA Pro Motocross Nationals on a 125 2-stroke. In this clip from the 3 hour podcast, Jase asks Stankdog for the secrets of riding a 2-stroke 125cc Dirtbike as fast as he does! Some of the advice might sound crazy, but it is hard to argue with the lord of the 2-stroke!
    //
Gared Steinke races f*cking dirtbikes... 2-Stroke dirt bikes to be exact. He is a cult figure in motocross and one of the most universally loved guys on two wheels. I have always wanted to have Gared on the podcast and I am pumped we were able to make it happen. If you don't want to rip a 125 after listening to this podcast we can't be friends.

I always told people it's easy to sound fast and "look" fast on a 125 but actually going fast is reserved for the elites. There's something really special about 125s over 250s imo, an underpowered yet feather light full size bike with minimal gyro compared to a 450 for example.. It almost feels like riding a motorized bmx bike sometimes 😅

  • @Antholography

125s are coming back because a 16 year old kid can't justify sinking one and a half times the cost on a 4 stroke 250. A 2021 YZ125 can be had for like $6000 USD, brand new. A 250F is almost $8500 USD - and that's fucking insane. Then - when something goes wrong; they're completely fucked.
That's the problem. That's why 2 Strokes are coming back. I understand why EFI is coming to 2 Strokes due to regulations, but simply put - no kid wants a 4 stroke bike because when it breaks - they either can't fix it themselves, or can't afford to pay someone to fix it. That is literally killing our sport. Your average kid is riding around on a clapped out 10+ year old 125 they can work on or a 250F with dubious service records. High costs of entry are strangling the youth of today out of the sport, because you basically have to be moto royalty to get anywhere.
No disrespect intended at all - but do you think Haiden Deegan would be anywhere even close to where he is today if his dad wasn't Brian Deegan? Or would he be another kid ripping around on a 2007 YZ125 at his local track with zero fame? He has an immense amount of talent - but without parents willing to sink six figures into your moto career - you're not likely to go anywhere.
We need a true; honest to god - certified; "sportsmans" Stock 125 Class. Get people in the door - pay a good purse for the A / Pro class; and get kids racing

What ever advise someone gives, its all about keeping momentum up. Shift to soon lose momentum, rev it too high lose momentum. Stay out of the soft stuff on berms (i.e. stay low). Find the straightest line.
A lot of times I found it fastest to use the first foot or so of berm to help change my direction and miss the apex then maybe use the exit of the berm to finish changing directions if you have to. Don't stuff corners like tomac and j-mart
Line selection is about the most important thing on 125.

When i was 16 in the 90s my first mx bike was an 86 rm250. Then shortly after i upgraded to a 95 yz 250. I never owned a 125 but rode several of the era and it was definitely a very different ride. I feel like 250f to 450f isnt that drastic like the difference between a 125 and 250. 125 certainly makes you better and moving around on the bike and working with it. Id love to have a fleet of then to rip around! Cool to hear stankD talk about this.

Even though 125,250,500 were all 2. Strokes ride each one differently. My KX 500 would wear you the fuck out. While the 250 felt faster more controlled. 125 is a shift fest.Tobride fast depends on the conditions rocky sandy muddy. All I know is. When your behind a 500. Keep your head down. Do the rocks bounce off the top of your Helmut.

Thanks for the Luxon name drop. I'm actually less than 5 minutes into the video and I stopped and ordered the link. It looks brilliant--I came from Honda to KTM and I've felt that on grippy tracks tight radius turns I'm not as fluid through. I feel this is due to a more weighted rear from geometry as I had a different link on my Honda to raise the rear and man that thing carved. I was already thinking about a linkage as I thought, "if this KTM carved like that, with this engine, things will go next level". I'm guessing it's about to happen. Unfortunately, winter is coming! But next season will be great I think.

The way he described the technique of "steering with the rear" is exactly how drifters setup their cars and driving styles for drifting. Squat the rear for traction and make the front end light for maneuverability. Awesome stuff!

If you can ride a 125 properly you can go fast on anything! I’m glad I was the last generation of kids to go from 80s/supermini to a 125 . The 250fs weren’t all that great, hell I think Yamaha was the only one making them. And nothing is more fun and satisfying than one clean lap on a 125.

Back in the 70s You could enter your 125 in 500 open class.lot of good riders won on the 125. It's not what you have it's how you ride it.

Something i learn in 1978 on my first bike the XL...i put chein shin paddle knobby onit ...it hooked up...also the knobs went all the around rim lip to rim lip....i could lay it over an it still stuck where ever i put it...but 2 stroke suffer one fatal flaw tjey notoriosly dont hook up good...and thats becsuse they dont make them so they have some low end pop...i had a 1986 CR 250R the only true factoryworks bike honda sold to the public out of neccesity..it pops real low warns u then tears out from under u like a good works bike should...kind of excactly how a modern 450 comes on then just keeps pulling..the difference between a 4 stroke hooking all the time was the rpm power delivery off idle it just turns slow enuf so it doesnt not dig in an then it keeps pulling...pulling a holeshot on a 4 stroke without the fork lock down is stupid u cant lean far enuf forward to break traction...it hooks terra firma so perfect...i was so jealous after riding a new CRF 450 modern...day bike remembering how hard i worked to get some grip off the gate...now theres too much WTF.

I'd love to see more 125's. Maybe even the sx futures or another class in mx or sx. Everyone claims the 450 is honestly too much for everyone but the best. I'd like to see the 450 class maybe even drop to 350 and maybe allow 150 or 200 s-strokes to compete in the 250 4-stroke class. 300 2-strokes in the big class... I wish they would make it so 2-strokes could be competitive at least in both classes is what I'm rambling on about!!

I'm wondering what tracks he's talking about riding in first. Id get passed if I was in 1st through a corner. Maybe my gearing is different but I'm always in 2nd in the corners. 2nd-5th. 1st is useless. I don't have any problem keeping the revs up in 2nd so I feel like that advice is dependent on what track you're on. I only use 1st if I'm trail riding

Awesome advice mate, when I was racing my 07 yz125 it was still to this date my most fun bike I've ever ridden on track. Loved how you could scream around sharp corners in 1st and coming out and down straight quick as you almost could changing up gears most time to almost 6th, but you could hardly hear difference in revs when changing. Flat changing high revs made it always up there. Avagud1

I came to moto from mtb, mostly only ride trails/enduro on the moto. I was really good at line choice and wasn’t afraid of speed, but using the rear brake, clutch and shifting gears I was terrible at and it obviously slowed me down a ton, until I snapped the frame on the xr400 I was riding and started to ride my brother’s kdx200 (which probably had less power than a 125) and after 4 or 5 rides on that thing I figured out shifting efficiently, and since I couldn’t engine brake I had to figure out how to actually use the rear brake. But then when I got a 450 everything I learned on that gutless piece of shit helped me ride the big bike a lot faster.
