    Interesting chemical experiments: www.m.chemicum....
Hi, today I will tell you how to grow a green crystal of Mohr's salt. Mohr's salt is a double salt of iron ammonium sulfate. To prepare Mohr's salt we will need iron sulfate and ammonium sulfate. These substances can be bought in a chemical store or via the Internet. Take a large glass and weight 60 grams of ammonium sulfate and 138 grams of iron 2 sulfate in it. Next, add 400 ml of very hot water to the mixture.
Mix the solution until all the salt is dissolved. The solution will begin to acquire a brown color due to hydrolysis of iron 2 sulfate. Now leave the hot solution for a day to cool down and to precipitate out the seed crystals on the bottom. A day later we can see that a lot of small green crystals of Mohr's salt have grown at the bottom of the glass. Also we don't need the iron oxide precipitate that is as well on the bottom of that glass. Take the filter and filter the solution into another container.
However, no need to filter the small amount of solution that contains unnecessary iron oxides. It is better to pour out this residue. Now you need to select a seed from the mixture of green crystals that have grown over the night at the bottom of the glass. The seed is a small crystal of which a large crystal will be able to grow in the future. Crystal seed must be of a regular shape and largely enough. You must bind the seed of your choice to a thin line and hang it in the filtered solution of Mohr's salt.
Now we shall put the glass of growing crystal in the closet, to protect it from dust.
Over time the water will evaporate from the solution, and the excess salt will form a large single crystal of the seed. After about 2 months, my crystal has grown enough and I decided that it is okay to stop its growth. I also had a crystal growing in a smaller cup. Now I’m pulling the crystal from the solution and, as many of you already know, covering the crystal with the colorless nail polish.
If you decide not to do it, the crystal may eventually turn yellow and lose its original appearance. Also, the iron salts have a rather strong smell, and I do not want to get the smell of iron on my hands after I grab the crystal. When the varnish is dried you can evaluate the work that was done and examine the crystal more closely. The ideal crystal shape should be symmetrical and have a complex prism. Crystal shape is defined by the crystal lattice of a substance. As can be seen, the shape of the my crystal is prismatic, but with some defect. We can see that some faces have irregularities and flaws. Also, the crystal is not fully transparent, all this testifies to the defects in the crystal. Ideally, the crystal must be transparent.
The defects in the crystal are due to the temperature fluctuations during growth, the presence of dust in the solution and the resulting iron oxide contamination.
However, the crystal of Mohr's salt is still quite beautiful and can be a nice decoration in the house. Although in practice, this crystal can hardly be applied anywhere.
Crystal is quite fragile, if you drop it on the floor, it will break apart.

When I saw this video 2 years ago, I wasn’t thinking seriously to make this experiment. But finally I had the opportunity to grow my own crystal from Mohr’s salt! If I could I would show you, but it is not as regular as yours because we were few students to take turn on this project and we could filter the solution just once a week, which is not enough. But the result is beautiful so thank you for inspiring me!

evaporation method is slower, but usually gives clearer crystals. cooling method forces rapid crystalization which usually makes crystals cloudy and opaque. evaporation method can produce almost glass like clarity.

You should add some concentrated Sulphuric Acid before adding water to prevent the hydrolysis of the Iron Sulphate. That will prevent the oxides from forming.

    • @vigneshpreethamganji6956

Isn't sulphuric acid dehydrating agent so it might remove the water of crystallization

    • @duchongle170
      @duchongle170 3 года назад

The sulfuric acid added MUST be dilute. If concentrated sulfuric acid is added it will oxidize all the ferrous ions to ferric and you end up making something analogous to alum instead

I had the same thing for practical today at school but since time was limited we approached a different procedure
After adding the hot water to the salts mixture we let it heat for some time and were supposed to observe some minute crystals in the process
Mine turned into a thick moss like paste and the teacher didn't accept it
    Did I overheat it?
I just don't know at what point should I stop the heating bcuz i believe correct me if am wrong
Crystals don't form just on heating right they need to be cooled down after that as well right?should I have just heated the solution till it was completely soluble and not have waited for any crystals while heating it?
Can anybody help me with this?
