What an excellent lyricist Colin Meloy is. Unique writer. I didn't know Grace Cathedral Hill, only the other two. The title reminds me of Red House Painters' Grace Cathedral Park

Great band. I dreamt I was an architect, and the entire Crane Wife album are more good places to look.

I always learn something new from you guys, like the inspiration for Red Right Ankle and Grace Cathedral Hill. Glad to hear you'll be reviewing the album, Picaresque! It shows in his songwriting that Colin Meloy was a literature major.

Love the Decemberists. Red Right Ankle was the first song of theirs that hooked me. Saw them perform the Mariner's Revenge Song live. Another artist from the same era whose lyrics are at the same level as Meloy's: Joanna Newsom. Her albums "The Milk-Eyed Mender" and "Ys" are classics.

We put up a Joanna reaction after this one which is so crazy that you suggested her because we filmed both of these long ago haha. Thanks!

@@ReactionsToTheClassics You're tapping into a new constellation of artists ( so called "weird folk" - silly moniker), brilliant wordsmiths with off-kilter voices who can also write incredible songs (it's not fair!). These 2 are probably the "best", or at least most palatable to average listener. Neutral Milk Hotel precedes them, and obviously had a strong impact/influence (and is their Equal)...enjoy (and scratch your heads maybe), it's another different world that the days of mainstream music media simply overlooked (although I think Decemberists may've had a couple "hits"? Dunno.) Oh, and Decem's epic track 'The Tain' would be a great listen, they even Rock out a bit! Regardless, Nice Work/Passion Project, very cool/addictive trend on youTubes!

I never heard of this group. The first song is a very nice acoustic ballad with a Folk flavor like you said Trey. It has a wistful melody and good storyteller lyrics. The second song is unusual. It has an accordion intro. I thought the accordion went out with Lawrence Welk. Lol I agree Shawn that it is artistry in songwriting. I think they captured an excellent nautical imagery in the music and lyrical storytelling. The third song has sort of a Gospel feel with the organ. It also has a slow Rock vibe. You guys are right that these songs draw the listener in. I think you guys are accurate on the ratings and what you said for each song. My order would be the second song first because it is unique, The third song second and the first song third.
