This is of paramount importance! A man for whom I have immense respect, reflecting on the mental health struggles common to many’s peoples homes! God has used Pastor Swindolls preaching to make a lasting and important impact on my faith! It is very important to to remember our clergy in our prayers, they are also struggling right along with the rest of us.
Pastor Chuck always has kept it real. An uncompromisingly acute and honest follower of Christ who has known personal struggle. It has ennobled him and vastly extended his example of what faith in God is. I bet he would sit down in the pew and talk to you. Christ is glorified. Thank you dear servant.

The old book is filled with people brought to the point of despair. The book of Job teaches us much and Pastor Swindoll has a lifetime of scars that are now the balm and bandages for others. May God bless him and his family and all those who go to bed with tears. God hasn't forgotten you. Remember, Joseph, Job, Ruth, Habakkuk, Gideon and Abraham, Mary and Joseph and Jesus. No WONDER Pastor Chuck's voice resonated as deeply credible to me when I "accidentally" found him on the radio when in the car decades ago! This was as a cyical non-believer who rejected Jesus after a lifetime of childhood trauma. I thought there couldn't be a God to allow such trauma & still love his children. Then when the Lord put your radio ministry on my car radio, I was skeptical at first, but your voice came with so much credibilty & love, I kept coming back to listen... I felt (what I later learned is) His Spirit while listening, so it made me hungry for more. I finally was born again in Fall of 1991 & have been clinging to Him thru countless trials since. I had no idea that this was part of your family's experience, which is very familiar to me in many of my experiences. I'm very grateful that the Lord led me to your radio ministry & that you complied with His calling to you!
Ms. Colleen, my heart goes out to you too; you've had a wonderful Mom & Dad, yet you've had your traumas in your family of origin & your own family children too. You wouldn't believe how many similarities we share! God bless you & thank you for this ministry!

Care giver fatigue is real. Sharing your heart and it's broken pieces is hopeful with a sigh. Sorry for your pain, both of you, glad you got through the valley and still are. And to others loosing hope. I'm in the alley Chuck, crying out too, what do I do Lord, help me, it seems like its forever.
I have struggled with Depression and despair throughout my life. I have to let you know that Chuck Swindoll daily radio program gave me so much hope that Jesus Christ loves me, and will not abandon me.
My dad was a minister and went through very similar things with my mom with depression and suicidal tendencies around the exact same time decades. Mom had been psychologically abused by her parents and the pressure of trying to live up to being a preacher’s wife. I so relate being the daughter. My dad’s personality was very much like Chuck’s. Getting off the meds, therapy and a loving patient husband helped my mom get through it. They were married 63 years . Praising God for their solid foundation on the Rock of Jesus Christ
63 years . . . what a legacy of faithfulness you were able to experience. I’m sure there have been struggles in working through the complexities; yet it’s so good to know you aren’t alone in them. Yes, Jesus Christ is our solid rock! Thankful for you!

God led me to this interview this morning as I needed encouragement. When Pastor C mentioned David strengthened himself in the Lord I had to pause to look up passage I Samuel 30:6-8 and read commentary on it and reflect on “how might I (like David) strengthen myself in the Lord”. Thank you for sharing your pain/grief/losses AND more so the hope of Lord Jesus who loves us so. 🇨🇦 ❤

Thank you for this testimony Pastor Chuck as a young woman 40 some years ago I experienced severe depression after my babies born lost 1st one absolutely no one understood the Lord healed me to over time I learned alot to practice understandingfor others
I like these interviews about your Dad. Thanks for posting them Now I know why he is such a great man. God put him through the crucible and he came out shining with God's glory covering him like that many colored coat Joseph's father gave to him. Your father has touched many lives, including mine. I'd be so proud to have him as my own Dad as I didn't have one. I see you're very loving and proud of him. That says a lot about you too. God bless the Swindoll family. Love you guys. REALLY GRATEFUL for this interview. I really admire and appreciate Dr. Chuck Swindoll's vulnerability/ transperancy, it's Rare. I have personally learn much from your example and openness. As a fellow pastor who also am facing several trials this was rewarding to my soul.
This… this bringing stuff out in the open is so important. Lord have mercy on us… at least it’s happening together
Thank you Chuck, your words have been my rope to navigate throughout the years, after a grievous home life growing up.
Later I cared for my alcoholic father until he died, years later, my Aunt and Uncle (that had no kids), my 20 year old athletic daughter from college, (that broke her neck coming home for a memorial for a dear friend/ officer that worker with her dad), and was paralyzed from the chest down (14 years ago, followed by my mother with Alzheimer’s. She just passed away a few months ago after living here for 10 years.
We are often misunderstood, and others assume we don’t care about them, because we have no time. Just a couple hours of sleep, being up all night, night after night.
To go anywhere you have to load a boatload of items, get yourself ready, get your mom ready, and get your daughter ready to travel anywhere. You do all that, and ppl feel uncomfortable around you, or upset that you might be late…
God has sustained me, and shored up my broken heart, and kept my body working. I needed to understand others can’t understand, because they haven’t gone through all this.
Forgive, pray, believe that God is good, and has good plans for our future.
My outstanding volleyball playing girl, is now 34 and God is singing through her today.

This is one of the most heart-touching comments. You have lived-and may continue to live-in the throes of many challenges that most people will never know of or understand. I know there are those moments of frustration, yet I have to go to Jesus who, while he spent 33 years on this earth, He too was rarely understood, accepted, or appreciated. As you said, “I am glad we went through this”. . . for sure. Without the pain, there wouldn’t be the understanding, the softening, the humility or understanding of those who struggle. All tempered by the complexity of Jesus's love by His majestic weaving of this bloodline that not only purged Chuck and Cynthia, but now resonates to those of us going through this now.
I watch this and other videos of you two and just cry deeply over the truth of what really happens backstage during life. So needed.
Although a North Carolina born and bred resident, in 2022, my wife Brenda and I had the privilege (deep desire) to visit StoneBriar Church on three different occasions. I had listened to Chuck on the radio since the late seventies, so it was time to see this fellow in person since we were in Richardson. Three times, we sat on the second row. My wife engaged with Cynthia after the second service and we thought it was such a gift to genuinely feel loved by her kindness. On our third visit, your Dad told the congregation to branch out a moment and meet someone. Again, close to your Mom down front, I turned to my wife and said, "Let's don't over do it and seek out Cynthia again..." of which Brenda said, "Well, you better turn around because she is coming across the aisle straight towards you." I immediately turned and there she was, opening up her arms for a hug and to radiate her kindness to us of which I'll never forget that.
That's why I'm crying hearing this video. I'm so deeply saddened that the sweet person we met was such a victim. My wife also has suffered the same, debilitating depression, coming from a prominent family of ministers. Her Dad was also a minister and the main player of emotional damages to my wife. Now thirty years together, this is soooo refreshing to hear. As a matter of fact, the reason we were in Richardson last year at this time was for her to attend a month long time of therapy through Dr Paul Meir.
Thank you both so much. The love just shimmers off your Dad. Thank you for your ministry.
John, your comment is filled with emotions that speak to the level of deep suffering you have walked through in your life. It also speaks to your faithful love and commitment to Christ and your dear wife, Brenda. We’ve known Dr. Meir for many years and have a great respect for his work. I pray you and Brenda have found healing over the years as God has directed your steps, bringing people into your lives for support and soul restoration. I’m thrilled to hear you met my folks; I can just see my mom making her way over to you both . . . a loving hug you both so needed. Oh my precious Pastor, how much you mean to all of us. Many of us have suffered. I had a pastor for 21 years who thought there was something wrong spiritually. I've been depressed from hormones and other times, circumstances. I think the Lord allowed it so that I understood others and can counsel, encourage. One of the most wonderful messages I ever heard from you probably 20 years or longer. Thank you. God bless you.
Lord Jesus, how I needed to hear this story. With the exception of my wife, all extended family by blood and marriage hate me. I was a cpa until about 50 when my mind just fell apart along with physical illnesses (back surgeries, HHT, PRES). It is living in a tormented state to feel that you are thought to be worth nothing when you have so much when you were the one that had the financial ability to help everyone else. Now I don't exist and forgiveness is never go I g to be offered to me (yes I made mistakes like everyone). Makes me want to depart this earth. Just waiting on Jesus but my kinfolk will never expect to see me in heaven. Grace is huge when it's all you got.
@jlfcpa I can hear the 'torment' in your words . . . having had back surgeries, the pain is indescribable; I'm praying for the Lord to provide you with relief. Regarding the choices others have made that have deeply hurt you . . . we have a Sovereign God whose Spirit provides us with His strength to move through such dark seasons. All you are called to do is to honor Jesus in every word, thought, action, and choice. It is HIS job to address the choices and attitudes of others. I DO understand the rejection you've experienced, the hopelessness that invades as well. My prayer is that the enemy will have no voice into your heart; that you will keep your single focus on our God who is good, faithful, and will redeem all your pain. In the name of Jesus, I pray this for you.

Pastor Chuck, God has made you like a Beautiful bouquet of roses who has allowed our Father to remove one by one the thorns in your Journey so people are able to come Close and fell safe. How I would love to sit with you both and glean what you have let Jesus teach you🙏💕🙏💕🙏 I am 81 and gone thru starting at age 3 many traumas and still do, but Jesus has been so Faithful to me, even when I couldn’t grasp Him there!! My husband and I have had to say goodby this side of heaven, our 5 yr old daughter our only so at 41 our youngest grandson at 12. My husband of 54 yrs going on 4 yrs ago. Many tragedies in between. He keeps me moving forward it’s All because of Him!!John 1:12 John 6:37….🙏🙏🙏🙏
I wanted to let you guys know how much this audio has been a blessing to me. I’ve been listening to Pastor Swindle’s sermons for over 25 years and they have been a blessing to my espiritual life. Thank you for sharing the struggles that you have gone through and the victories our Lord has giving the Swindle family. I would loved for this audio to be translated in Spanish most of our Latino culture are on educated or sometimes they are just plain stubborn regarding this topic “Depression” especially Christ believers.

"The aloneness is maddening." YES! So many "encouraged" me to get counseling, get on/change meds, etc. Really, what I wanted was one person to stay with me through it.
I totally understand. I've been going through the same thing for 5 months.

@@nancydecosta8577I'm praying that you have found help by now! But maybe try different churches or even the city or state counseling. In my state we have an emergency number for this kind of counseling. Or even walk into the emergency room at your local hospital.

I have waited for this information for years. I thought Mrs. Swindoll wrote a book about overcoming depression Gods' way, and I desperately have been looking and waiting for it to be published.
It's this information that gives me Hope again that I am not destined to die at my own hand in the end. My fear that there won't be Hope at the end because I can't control the thoughts of sadness, they just take over.
I've discovered Hope, and it's Power/Reality, because I walk this dark road.
I'd like to know how Jesus wasn't depressed all of His life knowing the truth about everyone. How was Joy and Hope, and completeness, achieved? I'm thinking prayer for refreshing, and healing time?
I’m so thankful you reached out! Some seasons feel like they will NEVER end . . . which is where you seem to be today. For now, your emotions are real but must be harnessed by digging into God’s foundational, true word.
Silencing the “what if’s” and “there won’t be hope at the end” with truth is essential because NO ONE knows what the future holds (James 4:13-15, Job 42). I would encourage you to turn on worship music and sing out loud (scientific studies show neurological and physiological changes happen with music and worship) and to look through our podcasts ( reframingministries.com/podcasts/ ) because many have lived through hopelessness and their stories will fill you with new hope. In pastoral families and ministries, this is far too commonplace - where the pastors and their families in our world needed or need clarity and perspective on mental illness and where it intersects our living out our faith. I love that you discuss all these things with your dad, the practical, and the lessons learned. Your dad is so sweet. I've listened to him and his sermons for many years, and he's always so captivating in how he talks. What an encouragement to see his growth and grit.

I agree, it's difficult to find pastor's and churches that are informed and maturely lean into hard topics like mental health and faith. The reality is no one is immune to mental health struggles, and those who are suffering don't have to suffer alone. As a family, we have had difficult conversations, struggled through challenging seasons, and grown closer to each other and to Jesus through it all. I don't know if I have clinical Depression, but the enemy has been playing head games with me; making me focus on fears of the last few years. My pastor has been helpful; reminding me of our most POWERFUL ALLY (1 John 4:4) As well as what we can do to ward 👿 off (2 Cor 10:3-5, Eph 6:12, 13) .
I have a feeling if I went to a Psychiatrist and started talking about Satan , and quoting scripture, I'd be under observation for the foreseeable future. So, other than church, I've been doing a lot of Journaling; addressing the Lord in my posts; so I'm journaling and praying at the same time. The closing line to a lot o those posts comes down to, *"You know what's going on, Lord. I don't. Please Help"*
According to the classic hymn, *What A Friend we Have in Jesus* He knows our every weakness.

I'm so thankful to hear your soul was moved by our time together. So very, very sorry for the loss of your husband! Prayer and tears are the path through such deep grief. I wish there was a "known path" to follow; yet each loss is so personal and unique there isn't a path to outline. Going to Jesus as you are each moment will bring healing over time. I pray you are continually comforted through this season.

Colleen I have been listening and been blessed by your Fathers ministry for year-MANY years.
To find this at a time that my family is going through unspeakable trauma/tragedy, a time where it can be challenging to find a ‘body of Christ’ that is aware, speaking and building each other up when it comes to ‘real’ life is a blessing behinds what words can express.
Just a lil history in my search for a body of Christ who could be of help-during mental health month in may, I called multiple church’s-multiple denominations-to ask if they were honoring or at least mentioning mental health amongst not only our culture but in ‘the body’.
I found none.
Please keep speaking-please keep being gracious, understanding and transparent.
The Lord has blessed me through you, I too will share and speak up so others can know the freedom of Christ as we are transparent and live in his truth and ‘light’.
I live in Washington state, (pierce county) are you aware of any churches in my area that are active in supporting others when it comes to mental health?

Janet, I am grieved for you and all you are enduring. I’m also saddened to hear how hard you worked to find help, yet nothing was provided or available. While I’m not familiar with a specific church in WA (there may be one, I just haven’t researched the state), I have a number of suggestions below ...
Depending on the severity of care needed, there are several treatment facilities I highly respect. Dr. Dan Allender started “The Allender Center”, which is in WA state: theallendercenter.org
Another remarkable resource is the “American Association of Christian Counselors”: the largest consortium of mental health leaders that I know of: www.aacc.net
Another treatment center called “Heart Light”, founded by Greg Langston, is here in TX; their site may have suggested churches. John Townsend has developed some programs; his site may suggest churches that work with families in crises: drtownsend.com
There are several ministries (not churches, but ministries) purposed to educate and equip the church and communities with sound mental health guidance. Many practices offer online therapy due to COVID. “Grace Alliance”, started by my friend Joe Padilla, is purposed to equip the church with tools and resources for mental health challenges and healing (You can find the interviews I've shared with Joe on our RUclips). mentalhealthgracealliance.org
Dr. Matthew Stanford is another great resource- he is in Houston where he founded “The Hope and Healing Center”. I have also interviewed him. hopeandhealingcenter.org
Because mental health is so vital to living well, you can find other interviews on the Reframing Ministries site linked in the video description.
I do know of other facilities that help with interventions and inpatient care. Debra Langberg has excellent material on abuse -sexual and spiritual specifically-, but any form of abuse is damaging and needs care. Her site may be helpful. I have watched many of her videos and they are very sound.
“New Life Live” is online and radio: Henry Cloud, John Townsend, and Steve Arterburn have been significant co-hosts and contributors to that ministry: newlife.com
I recently found a podcast called “The Place We Find Ourselves” hosted by Adam Young, which may be helpful and informative (they are connected to “The Allender Center”, perhaps their site has suggested churches).

Thank you for the candid conversation! It is helping me understand depression. In a follow up, maybe you could cover some things your father did for children, especially the older children like Kurt, to provide peace, joy (even laughter?) in the home. What can families who have a parent with mental health issues do to avoid passing on the problem to the next generation? Any ideas?
Karen, what an excellent question!
I’m thankful that our current times are far more aware of caring for mental health challenges. Growing up, there were so few resources, yet my dad did some excellent things that supported our development in the midst of the mental health challenges we lived with. I have wonderful memories of my dad being present when he was home. He spent time telling us funny made-up stories when tucking us in bed, we regularly played outside (tossing the football or playing catch) and always had an open door for us at his office. Dad played a big part in traditions: celebrating birthdays, going to see a movie Thanksgiving afternoon, decorating the Christmas tree (which ALWAYS came down Christmas afternoon), and attending our sporting events when possible. We both enjoyed exercise, dad and I ran together each morning for 2 years; some of the best memories I have were those early morning runs with him. We share a similar sense of humor which made it easy to connect.
In every part of life, we can only pass on what we have in us … so be a parent who pursues growth and interpersonal health. Kids thrive in environments that are emotionally safe, where there is grace and truth, and attachment needs are met. Being aware, present, and observing the needs of each child is very important. Also, a healthy support structure that provides emotional safety, the ‘language’ or ‘tone’ of the home being one of grace and truth, affirming character development, and proactively seeking help when it is needed are also vital. Author’s such as Henry Cloud, John Townsend, Gary Chapman, Leo Buscaglia, Paul David Tripp, and various authors with Focus on the Family are very good. Daniel J. Siegel is one of the very best authors and researchers in the field of interpersonal neurobiology, child, and human development. If you are able to see the world even partly the way God sees it... see how lost and arrogant humanity is without God, you'd have to feel something like chronic depression. The Bible doesn't record Jesus laughing and leaping with joy, but it does record him weeping and sweating blood. That's because he addressed the horror of it all aka, mankind's rejection of its Creator. He didn't sweat for himself only... He also mourned the broken relationship between God and man that he came to redeem in the lives of those who put their faith in Him. Chuck is a better preacher because he's in touch with this reality.
This is what I look up and say to God every day. Help me. I’m out of hope.

I've perused the Insight for Living website and haven't been able to zero in on the documents reggarding "Depression" - perhaps they've been removed? I the Articles Library, the Church Resources.
