After flooding in Calgary, Alberta in 2005, some ponds were dug, three in a row in more than one are of Fish Creek Provincial Park. A beaver came along and put a dam to make a fourth pond at the end of the series! The ponds really helped to slow water during the next flood in 2013.

I have been a long time environmental professional putting the pieces together for 30 years and you elegantly capture the hydro geologic component of in just over 6 min is a wonderful share to both lay person and professional alike. I have semi retired to 4 acres of green Kentucky hillside property. Blank slate with a residence. I have just been walking and watching this first year and you have captured the fundamental aspects of my very plan.
Watch natural flows, use elevation with water capture. I am an aquaculturist and intend not on just swales, but actual deeper lined terraced raceway ponds (I have sandy clay soils under KY31 pasture) for the summer month grow out in this varied temperate zone. No coincidences.

In Alameda County, CA, the ranchers and would be farmers in the country living with some hilly areas, the property owners have been prohibited from building ponds. Why is there such a division between Alameda County, CA and Permaculture? Regional Park Districts and Agencies that buy up water rights have so much political power, they demand other property owners with the own water rights not block run off coming across their lands. Who has legal priority?

Inspiring. I am learning a lot from you and others on permaculture. I have land I need to utilise, but not knowing how to collect rain water has been my biggest challenge. Now I know what to do and I intend to start small, by digging some trenches to hold run off, along the water flow areas, then allow it to seep into the ground. Next year(rainy season) I want to improve the water retention and replenish underground water hopefully. In the 3rd year, rains permitting, I hope I will see higher water output from the borehole, which will allow me to grow more fodder for the farm animals.

    Russ Bowman
Idea: Strained rain collection from the roof goes to a holding pond without a liner to let water perculate into the ground. A solar powered well pumps water into the pond near by or even in the center of the pond. The earth serves as a storage buffer to also clean the water up as it is pumped into the holding pond. A level controller keeps the pond level consistent. The pumped water goes through water falls to aireate the pond and supply water for a vegetable and landscaping garden. We get 35 inches (about 1 meter) of rain per year. The ground goes deep with mixed clay and sand, moderate perculation. With this set up, a 50 (15 meters) foot deep well will tap into the water table here. The holding pond will keep the immediate water table higher than normal locally. Our home water well is 100 (30 meters) feet deep but water is found at less depths. We could supplement this pond with house water, even select grey water (washing machine only, select detergent). This seems to be the least expensive useful rain and pond combination for aesthetics and irrigation. Overflow goes to a much larger pond naturally where there is a house water well 30 meters away, proven potable water. What say you?

I am interested in your thoughts how you manage or avoid basic water erosion and mud/landslides when you install these swales and dams. These are obvious occurrences in monsoon or high rain zones and usually on slopes or gradients where it is steep also the type of foliage or vegetation that is anchoring the soil in place; but generally speaking you are holding water in these zones so would these dykes/walls not fail in a way that being mostly just soil they would become saturated overtime and when a large deluge of water say and an extended rain period would this not cause these damns to erode in a way that is called landslide or slipping. how do you take in consideration for these water events.

Do you think a better place would be below the top pound from fire, temperature and gravity point of view ie basic permaculture practices.
Also having house in the mid way to property slope not only gives us all the flexibility as mentioned earlier but also provides us with privacy, easy access to property from the centre of property (location of house from).

Trees are good filters, and don't bring pollutants through their entire vascular system into fruits and nuts. But it's true, that any time you have automobiles in the equation, then there is pollution. So the same pattern can apply with animal driven wagons. I just included the cars because in the US, nearly every farm uses motorized vehicles. But I have been many places in the world where transportation on farms is primarily animal driven.
