The 2nd one I was stuck outside in the desert. The sand stings your skin. I just had to cover myself up and wait it out. They are really intense.

Not sand storm dust storm. One that is considerably higher than normal too. Phoenix sits in a desert river basin at the northern end of the Sonoran Desert. The Sonoran Desert floor is made up of a thin lay of top soil that covers a hard compacted soil that is almost as hard as concrete. The only sand you will find in the Sonoran Desert is a course sand at the bottom of dry washes and dry river beds. Because of this we don't get sand storms but dust storms.

Looking at these comments, I guess it depends on who you are. I'm from Colorado and witnessed my first sandstorm a couple weeks ago in Phoenix and it was one of the coolest experiences ever. They are often followed by huge lightening storms and a ton of rain and it was amazing to watch. I'm also a sucker for all thunderstorms related things but I thought it was absolutely amazing.

yesterday evening ( Monday 7-18-11) driving to work from Phoenix to Scottsdale, I was right in that dust storm and very scared and cried out loudly to my Heavenly Father : Please Father, You Who command the forces of nature withhold that terrible dust curtain till I arrive at work. Please my Sweet Mother Mary spread Your mantle over the car that no flying object can crash into it and causing harm or an accident. Thank God, I arrived safely and even earlier than ever and the dust curtain came over the moment I entered the nurses’ lounge. I was so thinking of the scared apostles in the boat during the storm. Thank You, thank You Lord.
the dust though comes thru everything and the irritating cough comes with it, you can actually feel that sand enter and irritate your throat, that’s awful.

A bunch of bipedal creatures have set up habitations in and near the desert and they seem to be amazed by an action of wind on sand that's as old as time.
They're interesting creatures no doubt - light seems to shine from inside their shelters and they fly around in pods with wings.

Ya, I was out on foot trying to photograph lightning, when a wall of dust I had been watching made a sudden advance from Phoenix to Sun City West. I had it in my ears, nose, mouth and eyes. Terrible.

Recently a guy got trapped in a dust cloud and he breathed in the dust and it instantly filled both his lungs to the top with dust. He was instantly turned into a mummy by the dry dust and partially vaporized. It was on all the local news channels. Very tragic

When some dry, late-evening, summer thunderstorms blow in across Phoenix & Sun valley they bring streaks of lightning and windy gusts of dust, but No rain! The desert air absorbs the rainwater and No rainwater gets to ground level. Such duststorms are common across the SW USA up to about +/- 200 miles north of the Mexican Border, but can happen in most remote, arid areas of western USA, all the way up to Canada!

  • @strasbourgeois1

The beauty of America. You can have a dust storm the size of a lake in one part of the country, and a blizzard engulfing your entire town on the other. And then hurricanes.
