masteroutlaw100 they’re a common natural disaster in Arizona like California with earthquakes or Oklahoma with tornadoes or the south with hurricanes. A bad one is definitely news worthy.

Not to mention this is WORSE than a sand storm just combine these together and you get Dust + thunder + lighting + sand + rain +valley fever = dust storm
Looking at these comments, I guess it depends on who you are. I'm from Colorado and witnessed my first sandstorm a couple weeks ago in Phoenix and it was one of the coolest experiences ever. They are often followed by huge lightening storms and a ton of rain and it was amazing to watch. I'm also a sucker for all thunderstorms related things but I thought it was absolutely amazing.
yesterday evening ( Monday 7-18-11) driving to work from Phoenix to Scottsdale, I was right in that dust storm and very scared and cried out loudly to my Heavenly Father : Please Father, You Who command the forces of nature withhold that terrible dust curtain till I arrive at work. Please my Sweet Mother Mary spread Your mantle over the car that no flying object can crash into it and causing harm or an accident. Thank God, I arrived safely and even earlier than ever and the dust curtain came over the moment I entered the nurses’ lounge. I was so thinking of the scared apostles in the boat during the storm. Thank You, thank You Lord. the dust though comes thru everything and the irritating cough comes with it, you can actually feel that sand enter and irritate your throat, that’s awful. RikiRibi
I remember that, I was driving back from Cali, and I look back and I see road blocks and a massive wave of dust. When we got hit by it we where in the car, and we could barely see anything
I moved here about a year ago and your first one is always the scariest. I was driving back to my apartment when the dust storm rolled in and there was a car about 15 feet in front of me that went into the cloud first and it disappeared almost instantly couldn't even see tail lights
