  • There's some major issues with how travels are called today, and a lot of the problem comes back to consistency. I cover 3 of biggest problems and what I think the best way to fix them is so people can stop arguing and complaining about travels, and we can get back to playing basketball.

Agreed. Except for the spin. That's a clear 0-step followed by two more steps.

I agree with all your recommendations. I'm teaching my 6yo Bball, and although he's very young, he's no dummy and he understands almost EVERY rule already.. except travel!! He can spot the flagrant disco dancing but the whole pivot foot nuance is super complicated because of those differences you explained so well.
It would be very helpful to trim it all down to a minimum number of clear rules applied consistently across leagues.
    Thanks again!

    Nice video as always 🔥
Do you have any tips how much air there should be in the basketball? I tend to pump up the ball very little cuz I hate when it’s so super bouncy.
But do you have any advice how the ball should be?

on the ball it says what it should be inflated to. Most balls I see have 8 psi. I bought a spalding pressure gauge so I know it’s inflated correctly.

As far as the last point picking up ur pivot foot from the triple threat isn’t illegal you just have to shoot or pass u can’t pick up ur pivot and then dribble. So in the post u could lift ur pivot as long as you shoot or pass and don’t dribble cuz that would be illegal

I remember when I first stepped into a real game after playing street ball all my life. Got called for a travel the first 2 times I touched the ball. I was so confused. All I did was take one step and start to dribble.
Someone then explained to me that it doesnt count as a step when the foot hits the ground, but rather when the foot leaves the ground. So, if I still had the ball in hand when my back foot left the ground that was "2 steps". To me a step is not a step until the foot lands somewhere. I still think thats the dumbest crap ever, but it is what it is.

To be clear, most rules are defined by the pivot and what it can and can't do, not so much by steps. Identifying the pivot is key, the things about the gather step and differences in the rules before and after the dribble is what makes things challenging and confusion in my opinion.

@GetHandles You're right. It's very confusing. Still so much I don't understand about it all.

Appreciate the sentiment... but he(and sadly 90% of the ppl) doesn't know the rules at all. If you are in motion you don't have a pivot foot and that misconception leads to idiotic steptrough interpretation, with the argument that you anyways lift your pivot every time you are driving for a lay up. To establish a pivot you need to be in a 2ft on the floor stop. Thers 3 kinds of 2ft stop: 1)u gather on both feet - then you establish your pivot by lifting the other, you got to pick wich one; 2)gather on 1ft and the put the other on the floor as well - your pivot is already established, it's the foot u have gathered on, only got to step around with the other, 3) gather on 1ft and jump stop on 2ft - you are not allowed to pivot. Step trough is and always was a travel, it's the very definition of reestablishing the pivot foot(example 1 I gave, with 2 ft in the floor if you lift one the other automatically becomes your pivot). Not knowing this could be misinformation, arguing about it is straight stupid.

Look up college and high school resources directly from the leagues (NFHS & NCAA), both have multiple written and video resource that clearly state the foot that is in the ground first is the pivot, regardless of being in motion or not. I've had multiple refs from these levels confirm this in my videos.
In regards to step through and reestablishing a pivot, again look at those same resources. I've also had refs confirm in conveying correct information in my videos. The pivot can lift (except from a jump stop what you gather on one foot and land on two), and it's when the pivot touches the floor again that a new pivot has been established and makes it a travel. Any major league resource or trained ref will tell you the same.

If you still think the step through is a travel, there's a video I've seen of coaches from the University of Kentucky teaching the step through in the 1950's.

@@GetHandles That's not what rule book says, it's an interpretation and a bad one. It was bad interpretation before but now it's simply ridiculous with the gathering step rule. By your interpretation, while in motion, you are establishing the pivot on the zero step and you are reestablishing it with the 2nd. That's not how pivoting works and never was. Before gathering step NBA players struggled with traveling violations in interpretational competitions cuz of loose implementation in the NBA. NBA refs are notoriously bad calling the traveling(probably cuz of league high pace), so they created the dumb gathering step rule, in hope that players would be contained to those new 2 and a half steps... only every one abuses it and it's even harder to correctly count and officiate. Now they r trying and failisng to interpret the rules creatively, without rolling back on the gathering step. I'll give you a final example why you are wrong, if u can't or don't want to understand it... you are beyond any hope.
I see u know the rule about dribble after pivoting, and if u pick your pivot beforehand it's a travel... cuz you have reestablished it. Rule book don't repeat previous lines and subsections again and again. Every bad interpretation comes from reading lines out of context. I'm adamant thers at least 2 points in the rulebook that red as a whole, 100% prove step trough is a violation and it's beyond any interpretation, it's just written in there when u read the whole rule what u can and can't do.

    • @kamendimitrov3051
      @kamendimitrov3051 5 месяцев назад

@@GetHandles what u say about pivot foot even in motion is another example of reading out of context. As I pointed in ex 2) how u establish pivot, it's righ there, only failing to acknowledge it only applies when the condition for pivoting have been met.
Another thing wrong with the creative step trough interpretation is, when pivoting u r making a single step multiple times it's a continuous process so in a step trough, you r not lifting your pivot to shoot or pass... but to continue your steps.

Once again, refer to the resources that the NFHS & NCAA provide. They clarify this in detail in their video resources, and again, I've had multiple refs on these levels confirm that my videos are accurate and correct. I'm not going to comment back and forth when you can go directly to the sources for accurate information. I'm just a messenger.

You're dreaming. The NBA isn't going to allow anybody to even have input in this mythical rules convention. So what you would end up with is the NBA making rules for the entire basketball world. Not something I would sign up for.

Well technically, outside the USA, all basketball leagues follow FIBA rules...
All refs are supposed to make calls according to FIBA rules, but some are more lenient than others. This isn't only for travel calls, but also carries, fouls, technical fouls etc.
    The final one, I agree...
