    At last, someone that blacked underneath also..
    Why people believe it won’t rust underneath amazes me. The water is full of microorganisms and love bare metal work.

    Hi Jasmin, What a great job you and your partner did, I have never blackened a narrow boat, however, I have scraped, sanded, and applied anti-fouling paint on the bottom of seagoing sailboats. It is a dirty dusty job and when you are done for the day you are exhausted and your arms feel like they will fall off. The good thing about doing your own work is that you save money, learn new skills and have a more intimate understanding of the condition of your boat. Because your diesel engine is so important to your mobility and life style I suggest you and your partner take an engine maintenance course. Back in the 1970's I owned a diesel Isuzu SUV that was so rare here in the USA that I kept a factory service manual and a factory parts manual in the vehicle and I referenced it many times. If you can find manuals even used on eBay (hopefully in English) they will be very handy as reference for yourselves and any mechanic that comes to work on the engine will really appreciate them too.

      hello we have learned alot about our engine and i am lucky to have a diesel engineer in the family so usually when things need doing we get instructions over the phone . we got a manual with the boat previous engine kept every bit of paper work ever very lucky!

    I think this is when you create a second channel with a group of other narrowboaters and a 24 pack of beer or a pitcher of margaritas. call the channel drinking and maintenance, thats when you get 6 other friends and family together to help paint and clean of the bottom, your boats bum is looking great .

      or the other things is kind of like the old tootsie pop commercials with the owl and make it kid friendly channel, how many rolls from the roller does it take to get to the center of the narrowboat or the adult version and also make it like a game show how many doesnt it take you to get to the center of the narrowboat and still standing and the winner gets another beer jk

    I'm in the middle of helping out doing the same thing on a friends boat, had the hull surveyed (3 little welds, not bad for a 100 yrs old hull) and put 25 litres of blacking on. Luckily the boat was craned out and the bottom is about 4'6 off the floor so we could scrape and brush from the comfort of a deckchair, unluckily it hasn't been done for a long time so took a lot of scraping and scratching. I have done the same at low level like yourselves in the past, the neck discomfort can often be reduced just by laying a little closer even though it then seems you're far too close, a pallet to lay on might have helped.

  • @FishWaterBrewery

    Jam a length of pvc pipe into the overboard drains before painting, nothing will drip on the paint and you can still use sicks and so on.

      You mentioned while the boat was being painted in dry dock, you could no longer use the sink or the shower because the water going out the thru hull fittings would ruin the paint. There for the dry dock experience was less than a good thing. So in the future when you do this again, stuff pvc pipe into the thru hull fittings and seal them by what means necessary, will protect the paint and you can still use your on board sink and shower etc.

    Can regular blacking delay the need for overplating indefinitely or is overplating inevitable? I've read about some boats requiring overplating at a cost of several thousand pounds.

    Is it bitumen based blacking? This could explain there being less around the water line from previous coats, as it tends to dissolve in contact with diesel or many other contaminants that float on the cut.also interested in primer you used, i've never seen primer used before blacking ( apart from zinc guard primer for two pack blacking).
    Looks like you did a proper job, I've never seen such attention to detail while painting blacking. Good on you.

  • @martyspargur5281

    Hi Jasmin. Your narrowboat has a very smooth hull. I believe this makes a significant difference in fuel savings (less resistance). You did a beautiful job, just like the bow deck. We call that coating coal tar epoxy. Seems your boat has had good owners in the past.
    Lying under the boat and painting may have been unpleasant but at least you had a relatively dry space to lie on, and having the boat up on the railcar certainly was preferable to trying to work in muck between tides. I always feel uncomfortable when i'm working under several tonnes of steel! One time we dropped a 6 ton rudder right next to where i was standing, it stayed upright on the crossbeams of the drydock, but certainly startled me!
    I am curious about some dimensions; can you tell me how long and how wide your boat is? I am asking so i can estimate how much weight it would take to lower the boat each additional inch into the water. Like if the waterline length is 60' and the width is 9' then i'm guessing that it would take around 1,955 pounds of weight to add each additional inch of draught, in fresh water.
    What got me thinking about it was the overplating question; because not only would overplating cost several thousand £ but it would add several thousand pounds (avoir) to the displacement. So a narrowboat would need a ton less stuff on it or maybe float a couple of inches lower in the water.
    I hope im not bothering you by asking about the length and width. No reply nec if i am. Thank You Jasmin
    BTW
    Cuprous oxide paint is more suitable for salt water antifouling than fresh, and more suitable for wooden or GRP hulls than those made from steel or aluminum.
    Malted milk bikies sounds heavenly.
    58' x 7' about 1467#
    50' x 6' about 1174
    I am using a salt water nomograph from Skene's and adding a bit more than 2% to allow for fresh water

    • @martyspargur5281
      @martyspargur5281 6 лет назад

      *...Adding 2.2% to the draft. And the rudder we managed to drop was 6,000 pounds, not 6 tons.

    • @martyspargur5281
      @martyspargur5281 6 лет назад

      Since narrowboats are all about volume, these estimates are all on the low side. It will take a bit more weight added than this for a given amount of draft gain.

      I dout it, it is basically tar. always survery a boat when you buy i know there is an age when the insurance company need you to update the survey every few years but not sure what age that would be. yes there are boats for hire for a week or so

    • @mxh5647
      @mxh5647 6 лет назад

      You can certainly hire broadbeams for travelling the Thames (We did Teddington to Lechlade and back) and narrowboats from many places for the canals. My wife and I have done it three times over the years (we live in Canada) and have absolutely loved it each time. You don't need to know much and they show you a whole host of how-to's before letting you go. Rentals can be a three/four day break, a week or longer. If you don't trust yourself I believe there are hotel narrowboats where a 'crew' does the work. We haven't tried them though.

      we use anti-fouling Anti-fouling paint - a category of commercially available underwater hull paints (also known as bottom paints) - is a specialized category of coatings applied as the outer (outboard) layer to the hull of a ship or boat, to slow the growth and/or facilitate detachment of subaquatic organisms that attach to the hull and can affect a vessel's performance and durability (see also biofouling). Anti-fouling paints are often applied as one component of multi-layer coating systems
