Macrophages sweep up and ingest PODS cytokine co-crystal nanoparticles

Macrophages are immune cells which "eat" pathogens such as bacteria. They also take in debris. Normally these ingested particles are rapidly broken down inside the cell into harmless components. PODS co-crystal nanoparticles are broken down slowly to release their cytokine cargo which is then secreted by the macrophages. This provides a potential new mechanism for targeting recombinant cytokines, for example to disease.
