curling is my favourite sport. haven't seen a hockey game since 1992. never watch football. just watched every single game of 2013 scotties. pro sport players play for money. curlers do it for competition

What exactly do you find weird about it? It's a great game - sort of a combination of billiards, bowling, and shuffleboard. Thinking about it objectively sports like baseball and basketball make no more sense. It takes huge amounts of strategy and finesse. The sweeping may seem a little weird, but it's quite practical.
I still remember seeing a shot of Jennifer Jones hitting her brush on the ice intentionally hard after that shot, it was only shown once on TSN and never again. Seeing her do that and the Saskatchewan win in the final made the win even sweeter. That was unsportsmanlike to do that with her brush. Curling is a very sportsmanlike game and don't do that kind of stuff on a national, televised stage.
Ah, if only Amber Holland had the success that Jennifer Jones has had over the years. Amber Holland's supporting cast was awful at the Worlds that year.

I bet this is exciting but I dont really get it. Why do they brush infront of the sliding object??
When they brush in front of the stone it keeps it going in a straighter line, plus it makes it go further
The brushing, or sweeping, does two things.
First; it creates a thin film of water on the ice which allows the rock to slide further down the sheet.
Second; it is to reduce the amount of curl of the stone itself. That is why you will see especially furious sweeping when the sweepers are trying to draw the rock around a particular stone they do not want it to touch.

hm I don't know it's definitely a cultural thing. As an American, of course I'm very used to the typical sports we have here like baseball and basketball, and A. football. When I found out about curling, and I saw the video and read how to play the game, it just seemed odd to me. Maybe it's the sweeping part of it, idk, but I have to admit it seems super odd to me. It's also I guess I'm not used to seeing people play this...
Sweeping the kitchen...Dude, where do you live? And in what time period? Do you own a time machine?....The 1950s were cool for rock 'n roll but not so great for equality rights....
