Consider me jealous! 😂 That said, I can't complain too much. I've thankfully got a guy now who holds bottles of things like Stagg, EH Taylor, Larceny BP, etc. But Russell's 13 is still high on the priority list!
is the new RR13 that dropped on Reserve Bar last week the only one from this year? Or was there one already released as batch 4 and then this recent one will be batch 5?

Looking at both of those bottles sitting in front of me. Got the JD a month ago, and the Russell's about 6 months ago. Been hesitant to open either - might not last long after seeing this.

Great review. RR13 is one of my all-time favorites but I have yet to see a bottle of JD12 here in the Rhode Island/Massachusetts area. Bums me out but I'll keep looking. Cheers.

We actually just did this comparison this afternoon! I think the JD12 beat the RR13 from this year hands down. I think the other RR13 LL/JL I compared to the JD12 the RR13 won that battle. Crazy how different the newer batch of RR13 is from the other releases.

@@bryanmacke I still really enjoyed it don’t get me wrong. It was pretty obvious that the new batch didn’t have near the volume of higher aged barrels in it. It was apparent by comparing the color side by side and the flavor profiles were totally different.
Bro it's like you made this for me. I've been hunting my ass off for a decent priced (not even a good deal, just not an insane $400+ bottle) Russell's 13 and then got a JD12 bottle and OMG it's my new favorite bottle.
So this is like my dream team comp.

Never even seen a RR13, but I do have the Jack 12 and that bottle is one of my favorites. Love the sweet butterscotch oak notes.
Calumet 16 v Jack 12 would be a great double bass too.

I’d love to see a double bass between Knob Creek Single Barrel 9yr and Russels Reserve Single Barrel! Both single barrels, both similar ages and just a slight difference in proof. Both killer bottles and killer values. 🙌🏻
I’m dying for your take on the new 2023 batch. I just got a bottle. I have two of the original 2021 release, one being nearly empty, and one of the 2022 release (not sure which, since that seems to be the only year of the three with two releases).
So I at least have one from each year but no idea what to expect of the new one.

I would love to see clermont vs jacobs well! I killed my jacobs so I won’t be able to compare them. You could triple bass with the knob 18, but I think it would end up last.
Russell's 13 is also double the price if you find both at MSRP. But sounds like the Russell's is well worth it

My two favorite bottles.
I blame RR 13 for RR Store picks drying up. Those where everywhere and, while popular, still mostly available when released. After 13 came out, anytime someone drops a RR store pick, they are gone in a minute.
You mention the butterscotch a lot. Off topic, but curious if you have ever tried American Brick Bourbon. It is the most butterscotch-ey bourbon I have had by a long shot. Never seen any reviews of it, and curious what an aficionado like you would think of it.

Living here in Columbus Ohio, i was wondering if it is worth it to chase these releases or if getting s.b. b.p. release from Watershed Distillery or Highbanks Distillery is the better option. It seems like you can rarely ever chase down the rare allotted bottles here. Any thoughts Jason? How well do you think they would compete with the big boys?
Unfortunately they are quite in different leagues. Watershed just doesnt have the aged up stocks yet but I do think High Bank can go head to head with other blended whiskys on he market. I think its super impressive

LL/JL or LL/KE?
Those are the two I’ve owned and both are very similar imo. The new batch I tried today that came out this year (don’t remember the batch code) was completely different! Side by side the color was darker on the JL and the profile was darker and more enjoyable on the JL.

I've got both, havent opened either yet. Got the jack for 140 and the RR13 for 155. I guess the real question would be, which is better at their actual msrp, since there is a $70 difference there. I had to overpay for the JD12, but apparently the msrp on the new RR13 is 150. If the trend continues it will be a 200 bottle for next years release. ugh. I expect the JD 12 retail to go up next year too.
JD and RR are so distinct, that doing a blind is futile.
I mentioned that in the video. It was more of a comparison to see how they drank. Not to try and tell which was which.
