That was during Beathard's second-round phase from 1995-2000 with the Chargers. He drafted winners in Round 2 like WR Charlie Jones, CB Terrance Shaw, Still, TE/WR Mikhael Ricks, RB Jermaine Fazande, and Rogers Beckett. And, for his final mistake, he told Charger HC Mike Riley (who wanted to draft Brady in the sixth round) that Tom wasn't good enough (so he takes Damen Wheeler and JaJuan Seider a few picks later).
As a chargers fan, the Ryan Leaf draft day trade did kind of work out. Without it, the dominos would have never fallen to get LT, Brees, Kaeding, Rivers and Merriman. That's the silver lining to me when I think about Ryan Leaf
Funny. Homeboy did win 2 Lombardis, but still nobody says they should have kept Eli over Rivers. Nobody. Of course if it was Peyton, nobody would be on Rivers' side. Same number of Superbowl wins. Peyton getting his 2nd on the very last game of his career. Nobody says Eli was better.

This video definitely comes with memories for me. Used to always go to Chargers camp at UCSD but this was the year I went to the most practices. The main reason was the linebacker mentioned in the video, Patrick Sapp. My brother in law moved after his freshman year from San Diego to Jacksonville where he went on to win several state championships in track and cross country running. One of his track teammates had been Pat Sapp, and when he saw the Chargers had drafted him he sent me on a mission to find him. What’s interesting in direct relation to this video is that they drafted another receiver that year, Charlie Jones out of Fresno St. Charlie went in the 4th round. He was speedy, ran good routes and had good hands, but he was 5’8”. We (my friends and I) all left camp with the impression that Jones looked like the better receiver. Assuming everything else had gone the same way (which is admittedly a big assumption), the Chargers would have picked No. 16 in the first round of the 1997 draft. There were six Pro Bowl players taken between that spot and SD's first pick of the second round. -- Tarik Glenn -- Trevor Pryce -- Tiki Barber -- Jake Plummer -- Corey Dillon -- Sam Madison That doesn't even include good players who didn't make a Pro Bowl or guys that went after SD's second-rounder
Don't even get me started on who the #15 pick was 😡I was so upset after the first day that I watched the Day 2 recap in a club. I remember wondering who the hell Sam Madison and Jason Taylor were (I knew about Derrick Rodgers since he was on the Arizona St. team that almost won the national title in '96). I wasn't nearly as well-informed about draft prospects as I am today. I don't think anybody was, the '90s were a much different time as far as the internet was concerned in general.
the only silver lining is the player that tampa took with san diego's first wasnt exactly a stud either, though better than still (reidel anthony... i was curious to see what tampa got out of it)
This was back when Bobby Beathard always tried to outsmart himself and everyone else by wasting first round picks on small school and small time guys. Jr Seau was his first pick as a GM and it was all downhill from there, with the exception of a couple of guys. AJ Smith pretty much did the same thing after his first couple of drafts
I wonder if Jason Taylor was a starter on the Akron team VT thrashed 77-27 in '95? Hmmm... A quick Wikipedia check says he was. It also says he played much better against them the next season.
When you’re trading future picks their value is seen as a round lower than what they are, for each each in the future they. So when you’re trading next years first it’s value is that of a 2nd. A first rounder two years in the future has the value of a 3rd. I would still rank the Leaf trade as the worst in team history because the Cardinals had Jake Plummer, they weren’t drafting a QB. More importantly Bethard should have seen the signs that Leaf was a bust before the draft. Leaf didn’t want to play in Indy so he blew of a meeting he was supposed to have with them, he & his agent told Bethard they wanted to do it beforehand, & instead of telling him not to do that Bethard loved it.
With that first round pick the Bucs selected Reidel Anthony. Ryan Still wasn't better than too many pros, but Reidel Anthony was definitely one of them. Still had twice as many receptions as Anthony did. But he didn't catch as many touchdowns. The Bucs also had to go on knowing they had a gator on their roster. Ugh!
Please do a video that similar to this situation 2009 NFL Draft. Seahawks trades 2nd Rd pick (#37) to Broncos. In exchange Seahawks receive the Broncos 2010 1st Rd selection. The broncos selected at #37: CB Alphonso Smith. Who only lasted a year w/ the Broncos. Then was traded the next year to the Lions. The Seahawks in 2010 with their second 1st Rd pick at #14 (from the Broncos) selected FS Earl Thomas. Nuff said
I don't think it's fair to say the Leaf-Cardinals trade was better because they thought Leaf would be great. They obviously felt Stills would be great, too. Without hindsight, the only dumb part was the round difference. This brings me to my next point: the NFL Draft is a total crapshoot. You can select Tom Brady in the 6th or 7th round or you can select Akili Smith in the first round. People generally believe earlier picks to be better, but there's far too much variability for them to actually be measurably better. IMO, scouts should be looking at character and personality over the physical attributes. NFL Films documented the difference between Peyton Manning's and Ryan Leaf's responses to questions and it's clear as day Ryan Leaf was not ready to be an adult even in his 20s.
bolts should have traded out of the no. two spot in the '98 draft once peyton went to indy. At least craig 'i'm not a starting qb i just play one in prime time' whelihan 'starred' for bolts not too long before that.
Trading for the draft pick that became Ryan Leaf was a dumb decision by the Chargers, but not a Dumb Decision™. It was a dumb decision, but we know that now in retrospect. At the time, there was a heated debate about whether Leaf or Peyton Manning would be the better pro option at quarterback. Obviously, Leaf now has a podcast and Manning is a Hall of Famer and two-time Super Bowl winner, but I digress. As JG9 so capably points out here, this looked stupid at the time. The only way it wouldn't have been would be if 1) Still had a Hall of Fame-caliber career in San Diego and 2) the first round pick the Chargers traded to get him was an absolute bust. The Buccaneers drafted wide receiver Reidel Anthony with that first round choice in 1997, which was the No. 16 overall pick. He caught 144 passes for 1,846 yards and 16 touchdowns over his five-year career. His career high in grabs was 51 receptions in 1998, which also featured career highs in yards (708) and touchdowns with seven. So, Anthony wasn't exactly a bust, but he wasn't exactly a spectacular player either. If Bethard had traded his No. 50 pick and a fourth rounder to get Tampa Bay's No. 41 pick, it might not have been such a horrific-looking trade.
I don't even understand why these dumb trades even occur. Why are you giving up a 1st round pick for a 2nd? Honestly these kind of trades should be banned for these NFL teams and GMs own good
I think you might be reaching on this One. As bad as San Diego's receiver core was, I honestly think the mistake here was not taking a second Wide out with the 50th pick. You as well as anyone knows that for the most part draft picks are just highly educated dart throws. When I first saw the headline I thought they also threw in that year's 2nd round pick, but didn't. The only problem with this trade was the player didn't work out. If the Chargers had taken Muhammad with that pick, you would be loving it. Also, only a year or Two removed from being AFC champions, there was a good chance that is a late 1st pick. Honestly, I think Las Vegas should do something similar this year and try to trade next year's 1st for a high second this year to get a right tackle. That's the one position that could keep them from a good playoff run this season imo, so why not roll the dice?
If he'd made that trade and then took Muhsin Muhammad with that pick instead of Still, people would call Beathard a genius. You win some and you lose some.
I just looked it up. The pick TB got was the 16th pick and was used on WR Reidel Anthony from Florida. He was mostly a return man, from what I'm seeing. He has 1,846 receiving yards, 16 TDs and 2,232 kick return yards. He lasted 5 years with the Bucs and had 18-19 yards per reception. So, not that bad? I mean, could've been worse. The Bucs 4 picks prior ended up picking Warrick Dunn, and they got that puck from Seattle
Beathard was from the old Washington Redskins regime One that traded away their first round pick 11 years in a row Oh well they would of screwed it up anyway 🙄
Not as worse when gaining another wide out by the name of David Boston who was irrelevant after leaving the cardinals n signing with the San Diego Chargers

Marshall was a veteran, but that wasn’t a trade. That was free agent compensation.
I remember at the time when he got drafted in spring 1996, I was 13 and I was like yay we got a solid receiver to help out Stan Humphries down the line. But come to find out it took Bryan Still three years to crack the top two or three of the Chargers' receiving corps. And even when he had his best season in 1998 (43c, 605y, and 2 tds) it was just an alright season for him and he was on his way out (gone by late November 1999).
Haaaaaaa, as soon as I read the header I KNEW it was Bryan Still.

Ngl the ads every minute or so makes it quite difficult to enjoy the video in its entirety
Hey good sir love the content brings me back every time. Idk if it’s the noise gate or editing whatever it is grinds at my ear a little. Not enough not to watch the video though carry on man
That gate is the worst. Soften it up man!
@@praketingrichraft6181 probably could use some simple tricks to soften up room noise outside of the daw as well
I love this channel, I do. But the fact that it’s so good just even more begs the question: how TF can you be this good at making football videos and....you think Darrell Green’s name is pronounced “Dur-Rell?” That’s like calling Reggie White “Reg-Gee” White. You don’t think his name is pronounced Reg-Gee, do you? Because’s it “Rej-Jee.” Just in case. It just makes absolutely zero sense. How’s that possible?
Well he pronounces Ts as Ds too so I'm not surprised...not to mention the esses......
He's repeatedly shown he struggles with pronunciation. And I say...so what? I'm not going to judge someone based on that, not when there's so much absurdly negative judgement in today's world going around already. Are you without flaws? I know I'm not.
How does he find video footage of all these old games?
@@JeffCirillo I think he has some connections to whatever previous broadcasting job/career he had, and has access to whatever tape library they have. It seems to be on a grander scale, or else he/his dad tape traded a ton or recorded every game possible that they could...jaorator9 must have some kind of hookup though, that is not available to the public.
@@DolFan316 It's public media that he's CHOOSING to put on RUclips for profit...whether you like or agree with it or not, he's subject to criticism as much as he is praise. It comes with the territory. I doubt he reads the comments anyway.
So wait, there was a fraudulent 30 year old playing college football and there ISN’T a card in the upper right hand corner for that?! 🤨🤨🤨🤨
Is there a video on the fraudulent player that was on Texas?
He played in several games so I'm sure there is
Also wanted to point out "Darrell" in Darrell Green rhymes with "barrel."
the one silverlining to this trade is that with that Chargers pick the Buccaneers picked Reidel Anthony, who was nothing special.
"Take Mel Kiper's word for it"
Considering how much he gets wrong, I'll pass.
It's like he didn't even know who Bryan Still was until the Sugar Bowl. Then again, it seems like the Chargers didn't know either.
I think the Mel Kiper quip was a bit of sarcasm.
Assuming everything else had gone the same way (which is admittedly a big assumption), the Chargers would have picked No. 16 in the first round of the 1997 draft. There were six Pro Bowl players taken between that spot and SD's first pick of the second round.
-- Tarik Glenn
-- Trevor Pryce
-- Tiki Barber
-- Jake Plummer
-- Corey Dillon
-- Sam Madison
That doesn't even include good players who didn't make a Pro Bowl or guys that went after SD's second-rounder
If kieper say your a good player, oh boy watch out
the only silver lining is the player that tampa took with san diego's first wasnt exactly a stud either, though better than still (reidel anthony... i was curious to see what tampa got out of it)
This was back when Bobby Beathard always tried to outsmart himself and everyone else by wasting first round picks on small school and small time guys. Jr Seau was his first pick as a GM and it was all downhill from there, with the exception of a couple of guys. AJ Smith pretty much did the same thing after his first couple of drafts
They were calling him Bryan Stiff before his rookie year was done.
Ugh!
Please do a video that similar to this situation
2009 NFL Draft.
Nuff said
You gotta do a video on JG8 about the 30 year old player because what
I don't think it's fair to say the Leaf-Cardinals trade was better because they thought Leaf would be great.
Buccaneers used that 1st round pick #16 in the 1997 draft on Reidel Anthony, so don’t feel too bad about it.
Those navy blue jerseys are awesome!
Good old Bryan Stiff.
bolts should have traded out of the no. two spot in the '98 draft once peyton went to indy. At least craig 'i'm not a starting qb i just play one in prime time' whelihan 'starred' for bolts not too long before that.
Lot more ads lately...
two ads every 1:30 it seems
That's exactly what I was thinking too.
Who was taken with the 1st round pick the SDC traded away the following year?
Bryan Still is family friend known him as long as I’ve been alive. Good guy.
Do a video on the 30 year old fraudulent player from Texas.
I don't even understand why these dumb trades even occur. Why are you giving up a 1st round pick for a 2nd? Honestly these kind of trades should be banned for these NFL teams and GMs own good
Did you mean to have ads popping off literally every thirty seconds? Its almost enough to make me unsub. Its REALLY annoying.

Why do you pronounce your Ts as Ds? You said Tony Mardin in this, and Walder Paydon in another one
Defense wins championship. Defense is important to have. Offense is second. Offensive line is 3rd.
If he'd made that trade and then took Muhsin Muhammad with that pick instead of Still, people would call Beathard a genius.
You win some and you lose some.
The Booker Reese TB trade was worse.
So what became of the pick?
I just looked it up. The pick TB got was the 16th pick and was used on WR Reidel Anthony from Florida. He was mostly a return man, from what I'm seeing. He has 1,846 receiving yards, 16 TDs and 2,232 kick return yards. He lasted 5 years with the Bucs and had 18-19 yards per reception. So, not that bad? I mean, could've been worse. The Bucs 4 picks prior ended up picking Warrick Dunn, and they got that puck from Seattle
@@chipwhitley6509 That's Warrick Dunn, not Warren.
