    100% mandatory. Just got back from a hunt in a NSW southern highland state forest. Found myself in a grassed clearing in the forest and nearly stepped on a stretched out full grown sunning Copperhead. I boxed around him, went about 5 m further on and nearly stepped on another one. So two adult copperheads within the size of a bedroom. Got out of that particular clearing at that point. Copperheads are meant to be pretty low key and not prone to biting but I dont think that holds true when you step directly onto one. My mate had a small tiger shoot off from in front of him as he reached down to check out some deer skat. You will get close to them and its the one you dont see that will bite you. The other thing to consider is leeches. They'll mostly come up the outside of your gaiters provided you spray their inside, giving you a chance to flick them off before they find your neck. If they do get inside the gaiter they wont go further than your shin because of the gaiter bands under your knee. A bite on your shin is no big deal and way better than one in your groin - just saying. And of course they keep your boots dry because the water you gather as you walk only really contacts the parts of your boots that have no seams or openings.

      It's funny you mentioned copper heads. I just came back from a hunt in the central highlands of NSW. During that hunt my mate Alex spooked a snake. We got it on camera too haha. The day before I was hunting with a different mate, Dodge, and he got a leech on him. Both guys had gaiters. Just goes to show how important they are when hunting in the bush. Thanks for commenting and sharing your story!

    I have to wear a pair daily since the local snake catcher had been using my land to re-release tiger snakes on for 20yrs before I bought it 🤷‍♂️

    The tie point's at the bottom are to loop some cord under your boot's so the that they don't ride up you boot's.
    Which I noticed that they had done in your video 👍. The ones I have are X German army ones from Ozzie disposals which have a stainless steel cord with a hard rubber loop that go under your boot then you tie it off on the bridge of your foot. Just doing the loop around the foot would increase the waterproofing substantially. 🤙Loved the vid cheers 👍

    Sometimes hunting Sambar in Vic you end up in some serious thick stuff. Gaiters a must for me.

      Completely agree tilz alt. A lot of my hunting is in the high country chasing Sambar and the dog wood especially can be a pain in the ass. When you smashing through bush gaiters are a must I reckon.

    Great take on gaiters. I recently became a huge fan.
    I always thought gaiters were nonsense until I started regularly camping in the Scottish Highlands.
    I have always been a fan of tall army surplus boots, and I treat them like my puppies. They are are so well polished and oiled that wellingtons have leaked faster.
    I never had any issue with wet "feet".... so I never really considered gaiters.
    The thing is that if you relentlessly trudge through heath and low brush, the bottom of your trousers basically becomes a low-tech combine harvester for sweeping up whatever crap you are walking through. Usually its just water, mud, bits of plant, but sometimes its ticks or other shit.
    Seems like a shame to have waterproof boots that are 14inches high, and trousers that come down to the heel.
    This is why I bought gaiters. Essentially they extend the protection levels of your boot upwards, to just below your knee.
    This might not seem like a lot but imagine a really cold night, you are shivering in your bag, and in the morning you have to put on your trousers that are soaking wet from the knee down, and you could have kept them bone dry by wearing gaiters.

      Great points! We get a lot of rain in the high country during winter time, which also just happens to be the peak deer hunting season. Having dry pants when you wake up at 5am to start hunting is a must!

    Steer clear of models incorporating velcro, but if you can't, make sure you store them in the opened position or put them on long before you get into the area you intend to hunt. I promise you, will be amazed how much noise the velcro makes, when its being pulled apart; even when you try to open the gaiter slowly.

    • @Thehuntsmanshow
      @Thehuntsmanshow  2 года назад

      Totally agree Will. A strong zipper is the way to go for sure. With that said, you really shouldn't be taking your gaiters off anywhere near game animals haha. Even undoing a zip can alert game.

    Been thinking of buying some gaiters lately.
    Gunna get back into some hunting and bushcrafting.
    Seen hundreds of snakes in my travels Chris.
    Stood on a Tiger last summer, good adrenaline boost I tell ya.
    Not the first one I’ve trodden on, probably not the last.
    Got struck once by a large Copperhead in my early teens.
    Only saw him leaving the scene of the crime.
    Had my good ole farmers gaiters on...... gumboots.
    Like been hit with a solid stick.

      Oh wow, they are crazy stories! Thanks for sharing them. Man, get some gaiters stat! haha. Honestly the two deal breakers for me on whether or not you should buy some are a) will there be snakes where I hunt? and b) will it be cold, wet, muddy or thorny where I hunt? If either is a yes you should buy some lol.
      Getting bit by a copperhead sounds nasty! Did you have to go get anit venom MC?

    • @Thehuntsmanshow
      @Thehuntsmanshow  2 года назад +3

      Thanks for commenting mate, even if it's a but depressing and overly negative. But we are all entitled to our own opinions and I can see some of the validity in some of your comments. The sad reality is that it's extremely difficult for Aussie brands to run and successfull business and draw a profit when manufacturing large quantities of product in Australia. Chinas manufacturering is just too cheap for businesses to ignore. That doesn't mean the quality is bad. Like everywhere China had both good and poor quality manufacturing. It would be great to have more manufacturing in Australia and one way we can work towards this goal is buy supporting local brands, even if they are manufacturing overseas, with the hope that eventually they will become successful enough to move it all downunder.
      Anyway that's a fee things to think about. Thanks again for the comment.
