You brought up Balder, and something worthy of mention is that Simonson did a stand alone "Balder the Brave" comic during his Thor run that does tie into the continuity of his main Thor story line, and it's fantastic. I still have the original issues, but don't think they were included in the Simonson Thor Graphic Novels I have, so you may want to seek them out if you can. It was only like 4 -5 issues, but is a great read, with that amazing Simonson artwork.
You got me chomping at the bit to read THOR next, my friend!!! Keep it up! 👍🏻 Question… will you move onto #11 next, or will you wait until November for #10 to come out before moving on?
I actually read all those issues on my tablet. I have the Thor Marvel Masterworks digitally. Digital comics are definitely not my favorite but it beat waiting until November. Sadly I will have to do the same thing with the Walt Simonson issues because the omnibus has been pushed back until July. Curses!
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 I agree, nothing beats having and holding the physical copy of a book in your hands, flipping through the pages, and inhaling the fresh ink from said pages. 😆
As a kid, I just read everything published. As I became older, I learned what a difference a good writer made. Roy Thomas, Chuck Dixon, names you learned to look for.
Well, we know an immortal can die at the box office, anyway. Simonson was only doing layouts, not full pencils during this period. That issue you signaled out, # 265, was actually inked by Joe Sinnott (says so right at the top of page one at 6:05 ). But you're right; it's beautiful.
The only "out of left field" story line in Simonson's 80 run would be the "Frog Thor" section, and even that has its charms and cool moments. I'm REALLY looking forward to your reviews!
Marvel - the place where death lasts a for few issues before some convoluted plot twist brings them back. The B&W artwork at the end looks sooo much better than those stories plastered with primary colours.
You mention Roy Thomas' run on Marvel's Conan, and it got me thinking. When Conan enters the public domain in 2028, will Marvel be able to reprint all their Conan material unrestricted, or do they have to wait for the copyright to particular stories by Howard to expire? How close were the comics to the original Howard stories or were they their own thing?
Thor's kitchen had Viking appliances.
🤣 I get that reference.
Thanks for putting these Walt Simonson Thors on my radar Michael!
That Ragnarok story-line is my favorite. Big John brought the thunder.
"Are you the lord of hammers?" My favorite Hopkins Odin line in the Thor movies. Hilarious.😂😂😂😮
That's a great tie you're wearing.
And the Thor art is pretty good too.

Truly deserving of the Epic moniker
Hey, circa 1970, Thor was hot, trust me.
Tom Palmers inks were a little heavy tbh.😮😮😮
Marvel: "Thor is blonde, Odin has two eyes, and Baldur is still alive."
Roy Thomas: *adjusts glasses" "Umm, actually..."
I once spotted Roy Thomas in a Mexican restaurant. Closest I’ve come to comic book greatness.
"He's not really dead, he's mostly dead" He was brought to Miracle Max for healing lol "Have fun storming the castle"

You should try exploring Japanese comics (manga) they are really great. I recommend Berserk by Kentaro Miura and 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urusawa
