If you invert the corners in the shape of a triangle (about 1.5 inches deep from top to top) and sew across it at the top of the triangle, then snip off the excess fabric, it gives the bottom of the bag a bit of width so you can carry wide items in this bag.
This is my first sewing project, I've made some mistakes but it was solely my fault of sucking at following the instructions, the bag turned out great! Thank you!
I'm a beginner at sewing. I've watched many tote bag tutorials, and I think this is my favourite! Thank you for your simple and detailed instructions. Cant wait to try it.
Very good and clear instructions! I'm teaching a couple of teens, age 17 to sew. I was trying to find a basic non lined bag then saw this. I came to your site searching on easy rag quilts and found that no block making one! Ive started doing french seams if I dont line my tote bags mainly because of using denim. Or you can double sew the seam and leave in reverse to have a raggy edge. I also most often box my corners. Im lazy too. Although that small seam gage has been my sewing life for over 60 years I just cut my straps a bit wider and iron in quarter folds. Especially if using a bit thinner material it makes the second edge thicker for topstitching. Subscribed and checking out more videos. And link this one to the teens! Thanks so much.
Aw! Knowing and getting used to your machine is 80% of it. Then just learning each step of sewing. A project is just steps put together. All you are lucky. I had my mother show me how to use her treadle in 1960, age 5. Just to make stamps then a few small things like doll pillow. I was on her electric by age 10 and quickly was buying patterns. It didnt take me long by my teens to know more then my mother. Then I took adult ed classes and picked my teachers brains. But the internet is so great. Any issue or process can be googled. I never made bags at all until my retirement. But I have always remade thrift clothing. Still wear remade thrift. I love anything goes these days.
Thank you so much. I am now learning to sew with absolutely no prior knowledge. I so appreciate you taking your time to explain each step. I'm subscribing right away and I'm hoping to learn more from you❤
So glad you enjoyed this tutorial! Adding a photo can't be done on youtube sadly. But you could always tag me on instagram :) Although I am not on insta as much as youtube so it will take me a bit to reply :)
Never knew there was a sewing stilletto! I just use one half of my little sewing scissors, but I did just order one for those times my sewing machine acts like a toddler and won't sew!!!!!
i have just bought my first sewing machine and was looking for a first project. As its my first project ill watch your video, pause and ask questions so im sorry for all my commetns haha but im 34 and have never sewn
Thank you so much! My grandmother really had the crafting gene for sure! Congratulations on the news of a grandbaby, and as long as your grandbaby is a creative they would love to learn to sew :) Even my boys had fun learning in their early days. Enjoy holding that special little one when they arrive!!!!
Thanks for talking us through the process instead of just assuming we know; or have an idea; or can learn by watching. The other videos with just background music and no instruction are awful. So, again, thank you.
Yes you can! The difference will be that the bag will not be as stiff/sturdy. But I have a foldable tote bag tutorial that uses just cotton and I use that bag all the time! It’s great!
All the extra info including the finished size is shared in this blog post: www.tamarasjoy.com/tote-bag-sewing-tutorial/ hope that helps! Happy sewing 💜
Great tutorial, unfortunately not happy as the canvas fabric you have listed in your description is obviously NOT the one you used and I ordered 2 metres of it from a stockist in the uk under the impression that that is the one you used as its is under the needed items. such a pity as your fabric is gorgeous
Demi, I am so sorry that happened! I always try to recommend fabric that is the right type for the project. (canvas vs. Cotton or fleece). I suppose I need to make it clearer that it is not the exact fabric. The fabric in the video is no longer available for purchase as far as I know. Again, I am so sorry for the confusion. I hope you still enjoy sewing up the project. It is a great beginners project.

❤ this is probably one of my favorite ways to make a bag without lining. 😊

Amazing!!! I made it following the video and it came out pretty darn good for my first try. Thank you so much!!!
I am so glad to hear that!!!! Keep up the great sewing :)
If my fabric is a print that is directional, do I need to add any length to my fabric account for an added seam on the bottom?
Never knew there was a sewing stilletto! I just use one half of my little sewing scissors, but I did just order one for those times my sewing machine acts like a toddler and won't sew!!!!!

You're welcome!
For those who have problem with straps, can use wide gross grain ribbon instead.

I am so glad you appreciate that Patricia! I started making these videos because I felt like I needed the same thing :)
Can I use cotton instead of canvas? What the difference?
Yes you can! The difference will be that the bag will not be as stiff/sturdy. But I have a foldable tote bag tutorial that uses just cotton and I use that bag all the time! It’s great!
Can you do a video using light weight material
A French seam would be ideal.
2:17 is this Cotton Canvas?
Wonderful just what i need : ) wanted to buy you a cup of coffee but you dont have tip jar...
Hi…just to let you know your blog post isn’t a link.
Thanks for great video!!
Ahh!!!! Thank you so much Ann! I scheduled it to go live, but I suppose I had the wrong time entered. It is live now ☺️ thanks for letting me know 💜
Please tell us…what would be the FINISHED size of the bag? I’d like to make one for my 10 yr old granddaughter. Thank you!
