  • In June 2016, British writer Sarah-Louise Jordan became the latest in an impossibly long line of women to be sent, without so much as a warning, an unsolicited photograph of a penis belonging to a romantic stranger. Thankfully for us, Sarah-Louise chose to respond by letter.
    At Letters Live at Women of the World Festival, Southbank Centre in March 2020, Olivia Colman joined us to read this letter.

    A telephonist, working in a library was once asked where to find a book about penis enlargement and without a moment’s hesitation she replied, “That’s in Myths and Legends.”

    • @Goldenhawk583
      @Goldenhawk583 Год назад +59

      @@poinky8 If you had time to forget about it, then I would suggest it does not happen too often. Body image, I hope, is not the main cause of suicide among males. I am glad you said males, because they can hardly be called men.. if that is their reason.
      Also, while there are surgical ways to enlarge a penis, no other methods have been proven to work as far as I know.
      Finally, this video was about a man, that thought so highly of his penis, that he tried letting the penis do the talking for him, which did not go too well.. and such, setting the tone for these comments.

      😅 Medical advice can be lifesaving!
      I remember seeing a Pinterest post of texts in which a woman responded to an unsolicited d!ck pic by asking if that's a child's penis; of course sender responded NO! Woman responded that it looks like a child's penis, and showed a form for reporting the sending of pictures of children's genitalia to the Feds. I do like the idea of scaring the living 💩 out of those who choose to send UDPs, and Sarah-Louise's response is hilarious and brilliant, too.

    I always remember my mother in law telling me about an incident that happened to her on her way home from evening classes. It was dark and a man called to her from his wound down car window, being wary and thinking he was lost, she gingerly made her way over to help, as she looked inside the window, he opened his coat and there was his penis in few view, without hesitation, she said ' you should put that away as it's cold and you might get a chill, then just walked on by to her home. She had me in stitches. I'm sure I wouldn't have been as calm as that.

    Olivia and Sarah Louise are brilliant. The person who wrote the video description is not. Describing the sender of the unsolicited photo as romantic misses the point. It’s just harassment. I don’t believe that any man really thinks that sending a photo of his penis to a woman he hasn’t met is going to result in a date.

    • @waylanddavick9459
      @waylanddavick9459 2 года назад +73

      I think you credit these kinds of men with a little too much coherent thinking.
      A man who has watched too much pornography may brainwash himself into believing he has something special to offer a woman. A man does not do his best thinking while aroused, quite the contrary.
      I think you're absolutely correct to say it is just harassment. Society should view it this way.

    • @waylanddavick9459
      @waylanddavick9459 2 года назад

      I think that you are confused because you are trying to reduce the complex problem of sexual harassment to a single factor.
      In cases of rape, the majority of cases do resolve to being rooted in a will to power. That is well researched and I've read scientific articles which discuss this.
      In cases of lewd imagery - specifically unsolicited nudes - I haven't seen any research that indicates there is no sexual or romantic intent driving the behavior. I can't see how your hypothesis can be correct in all cases.
      Do you have a link to a well-researched psychological article on the subject or are you just writing what you think is factual?

    • @ems7623
      @ems7623 2 года назад

      Speak for yourself. I quite like getting those pictures. I think they are amusing, bold and clearly communicate what they guy is after (at least in that particular moment.) I suppose women like you would think I'm a "slut" for enjoying that, but I hardly care. So, he opens with a dick pic. Fine. What happens next? Is he someone I would want a one-night stand with? Does his horniness subside and move in the direction of a real conversation?
      Honey, a photograph on its own is not "harassment." Please. Real harassment is when you say no or ask someone to stop doing something and they persist and persist. If you really feel "harassed" by a photograph (dick or not), you might want to evaluate why you feel so easily threatened.

    • @naomigreen3703
      @naomigreen3703 2 года назад

      @@waylanddavick9459 I once read an article about people who had actually had research done into exactly why some men send unsolicited dick picks to women, what their motivations were, and what they hoped to get out of it.
      It came down to two main categories. The first category was men who did it for the hope for reciprocation. In their mind, they thought, they would enjoy seeing pictures of a woman's genitals, so it must go to reason that a woman would feel the same about receiving pictures of a man's genitals. So by taking the initiative and offering his up first, their hope that the woman would respond in kind and send him hers. The article went on to explain that this strategy did actually have a bit more success with gay men, but not so much with women.
      The second category of men who did this were ones who got a thrill from the act itself. That is, they had no expectation or even intention of impressing the woman or receiving any form of reciprocation. He knows she doesn't want it. He just gets off on knowing she'd seen it. In this case it is straight-up-harassment with the intent to harass.

    And Bravo Sarah, what a brilliant witty, polite, and hilarious letter.
    My Mum had a rapier wit and when she was in later years, probably about her 50's 60's she was flashed at..
    Her retort made me howl with laughter.. '..I didn't know they made them that small..' (he scuttled off).
    I like to think I inherited a bit of her wit, as a barmaid I too was flashed at, by a groom-to-be on his stage night...
    So I said '.. Aww never mind at least on your Wedding Night there'll be two of you looking for it, do you need a pair of tweezers??' (his mates took the p*ss out of him all night.)
    Thanks Olivia and Sarah for the chuckles..
