I purchased a few 360 games for my son for Christmas and of course, our system started having disc read issues days before he opened the games. I purchased a replacement disc drive instead of just the laser. I couldn't get it to work so I kept digging and discovered your video. I swapped the laser from the new drive into my original and so far it is working. Thank you for posting this!
You can swap the whole drive just the mecanism you need to desolder and solder the pcb from your original dvd drive to your replacement drive and problem solved the software dvd key is what recognize your games codified in xbox code only readable by the dvd drive flashed with the cpu key of that console or having the Original pcb swapped.
Fantastic walkthrough. A friend gave me his 360 for helping him move (the year is 2023) but didn't tell me it didn't read games anymore. It would load, but act like you didn't put anything in the tray. Opened it up and the laser was all the way out like it was at the edge of a disk, unlike in the video where it was at the position nearest the center. I popped it back to the center, cleaned the laser, and put it back together. Fired it up and it works like new! Thank you so much for the helpful video!!!!
Something that may avoid needing to remove the dust seal. You can manually eject the tray mechanism before you pull the drive apart, and remove the plastic fascia (couple of plastic clips hold it in place, and it should slide up off the end of the tray). You can then close it and it should close inside the area of the dust seal.
I just wanted to tell you thank you so much for the video, words cant describe right now... Microsoft was about to charge me the same amount of money to fix it, vs. me going out and purchasing a new one. I tip my hat to you, I salute you, and God bless you! Thank you again...
@@jaywilliams6460 I don’t think I should risk this because my Xbox 360 slim is very valuable to me I have 109 games plus I had my Xbox 360 since 2005 so I’m 16 years old So it’s the same age as me plus I always play it in 2021 2022

Thank you for keeping this video posted. I noticed that the laser assembly does not lift up all the way when the disc drive closes. That non-lift closure resulted in the laser assembly hitting the green board, so the laser could not move the full length of the disc, which I assumed gave me the "Open Disc" error. So, I decided to file the contacting edge of the silicon board into a ramp. I used a finger nail file. I was careful filing the silicon board because I did not want to damage any of the board's channels. Next, I filed the one & only black holding clip that keeps the silicon board in place. I took off the one screw holding the green board to the black frame. By reducing the thickness of this holding clip, the silicone board rested away from the laser assembly. I stopped filing the black holding clip once I could freely move the laser assembly without striking the green board. Next time I powered up my Xbox 360 S, I heard the disc start to spin and the the "Open Disc" error did not occur.
Turns out there a few more things to do prior to replacing the laser assembly or the whole drive! There "pots" under that yellow/orange ribbon cable attached to the laser and if you turn the left ever so slightly you can give the laser more power it is best that you use a voltage meter here and take note of the original positioning of the pots so you know where to go back to. The other issue is the two screws that hold the laser assembly in place they can move up or down causing the laser to be tilted because they use rubber vibration dampers that deteriorate over time. You can find those two screws on the back side of the disc drive meaning you would have to flip the whole laser/tray piece to get to them. I just got this issue with my slim and will try those fixes out since. Cleaning my disks did not work nor did a DVD cleaning kit. I tested the games in another box and they worked fine.
Thank you, Eric. You rock. The only video that showed the proper depth of repair for this particular optical drive. From Honda guy to Microsoft repair. Who knew?!
Fantastic video Eric. You've now helped me replace brakes and rotors, diagnose and repair an overheating car, and now repair my xbox 360. What don't you do?
Omg! Thank you so much!! I never thought I'd be able to fix my Xbox and I really thought I'd have to buy a new one but I followed your video and omg it works now. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU😁😁

Eric, the corrent term of the white things @27:06 is "themal pads" they design to conduct the heat from the IC to the heatsink to the heatsink itself in this case is the metal body of the CD. they do that because every surface in nature is not completely flat , it has microscopic grooves in the heatsink surface that can perform like a thermal resistance, so the pad or thermal grease that sometimes used, is design to smooth those microscopic grooves to get better thermal conductance. just FYI :)
hi mate, just changed my laser and its working absolutely fine. just want to say a big thank you for the detailed video and good video quality. by far the best video on youtube. anyways thanks again. Pad

Thank you Eric you saved my Xbox 360 slim that's what it's called The slim from the trash I opened it to clean the rubber band because the tray kept jamming but when I put a disk back in I caught the open tray error watching this video helped me and my brother fix the Xbox and get it working once more again but my dust seal broke off but it is still working without it we're keeping the system clean so it should be no problem
as usually nice one... one thing tho - it is good to put some fresh vaseline on the slides and the "screw" which is moving the laser. That way the stepper motor which controls lens position will have much less friction to overcome.
thanks man, really helpful video. all the experts' videos seem to assume that you already know how to get to the DVD drive, which seems to be the hardest part. seems to have worked, although only time shall really tell.
quick tip when taking off the shell of the 360 take the back off first not the front. then you don't have to worry about the ribbon in the front as it will come off once you get the back panel open the front will fall of ever so gently!
Oh my days. I fucking love you. Followed this step by step, and tadaaa. 360, good as new. I thought my motherboard had gone or something, the console was taking forever to fire up and wouldnt read discs, this has worked a treat. Thanks man, keep up the good work.
Just to let you know as far as I'm aware you cannot just swap the disc drive for a new one due to coding on the disc drive it may work offline but as soon as you go online you will be banned for modding the console . If you have to replace the disc drive laser you need to un solder the original laser and re solder the new one into the old drive same goes for the motor if that need replacing . So if you play online don't just put a drive from a different console in as you may be banned from xbl
Good question. Plug it into a USB port on an old model and see if it works. It could be effectively identical hardware to the external device they sold separately for the previous models. You'll need a usb extension cable to make that connnection but it wouldn't hurt to try. There are no internal USB ports on the original model that I know of.
I accidentally dropped my Xbox 360 slim and it gave me the error 03-57-00 with all the discs, i performed the disassemble and spray it with air can... worked like a charm. thanks!
Eric they make a disc that you run inside the tray like a normal game, and it cleans the laser! Pretty cool, it worked on my Xbox when I had this trouble! May be a good option before tearing it apart!
yo eric, the disc drive is paired with your systems specific disc-drive pcb. you need to swap your original disc pcb with a new disc drive, by removing the pcb from the new drive and putting your old pcb onto it, that is if you are replacing the entire disc drive itself

Just a word of caution for everyone attempting to do this: Do NOT use magnetic screw drivers or ANY magnets near the electronic components. And be really careful with touching any circuit boards. Make sure your hand touches metal to discharge any built up static before you handle any fragile electronic components.
If you cut one of the wires on the fan, I believe its the grey wire, it will force the fan to run at full speed which prevents RDOD (Red dot of death). I also recommend to people to remove the stock thermal paste with some rubbing alcohol, and a razor blade, and apply a thin layer of artic silver 5.
Just a tip when at 12:40, I've done this a few times on an unopened xbox before, all you do is you grab one side and man up, and just split the two pieces apart and do it as fast and as hard as possible, it will make a MASSIVE noise but it will not break and it will be 100 percent fine. :) I'm not joking or anything. It's the easiest way to get it apart without breaking anything.
Even though I know alot about electronics and cars , In just a week alone of watching your videos I've furthered my education (especially on cars lol) , Just wanted to say thank you and I'll stay dirty trust me, (should have seen me after I replace all my EVAP lines on my 97 Mustang lol, how come they don't use vacuum hoses that can handle gasoline without disintegrating? Thanks Eric.
Hi Eric, You broke so many rules of working with electronics. However you did a very good job. If you would have applied for a job with us and showed this movie you would have passed... well. If you would have used an anti-static band and mat and a screw driver that isn't magnetic. Magnetism is a form of energy just like electricity. It can screw up electronics. And yes your video was very useful.
You can also get the same model drive to replace it and simply swap over your old controller board to the new drive. A good way to save money if you find a used working drive on ebay.
great tips to help me in the future, I only doing because xbox help support doesn't work for me, it doesn't give a deep answer. keep doing what your doing.
Good tutorial. It should be simply titled: replacing the 360 S laser. For me, all tries at different fixes have failed. If in fact, it IS a laser (which I can't test without purchasing) - you can buy a WHOLE factory replacement drive online for 25 bucks.
This is a message from the future to anyone worried about opening up a modern console like the PS9 and that frustrating mind-link gimic addon or the X-Switch and it's underutilized matter replicator function. Warrantee void stickers have been illegal since 1975. The FTC had to crack down and send out letters to all the big hardware makers like Microsoft-Nintendo and Atari (they made a HELL of a comeback didn't they? I see their logos all the time when flying to work each morning.) to get them to comply.
Good stuff man I followed. All the step and put back together and it still didn't work But I smack the CD drive with my controller no more beeping sound when u eject great tutorial keep it up u saved meh 375.00 I was going to buy a xbox 1
cleaning the laser with a qtip and alcohol wont harm the laser. ive done it lots of times and it lasts years. its just dirt and oil from touching disks with your fingers instead of on the sides.if that don't work just by cleaning it, then you can tweak it those little screws on the back of the laser is a potentiometer you can decrease the resistance going to the laser to increase voltage and make it read again if done that to and they work for years longer. air duster = bad for dvd drive goodvid
Remember when fitting new laser the tint blob of solder at the side of the clip that holds the ribbon, this bridges three lanes on the small board ands needs to be wiped with soldering iron until all you see are three small dots of solder. They are packaged this way to stop static electricity messing with any parts before reaching the customers. It will not work if you don’t remove the solder.
only advise is to replace the laser, but you need to know what kind of drive you have inside, if the new laser doing the same thing you would need to replace the PCB inside but you need to get the drivekey out first using some special tools
Life saver, used a blue shop rag with 90% rubbing alcohol, don’t want to speak to soon but it is running smoother than ever! Edit worked for a day lol but atleast I know it’s the disc drive
Thanks for your excellent video! Thanks to you my Xbox works like new after I bought a new dvd laser and installed it!! PERFECT!!! Bit remember one thing when you buy a new laser before installation. All Lasers Required to Remove Anti-Static Point Prior Installation!! Otherwise laser will not work!! I found out, because my lase did not work at all until I did this.
Where is this anti-static point you speak of? I just installed a new laser, and it isn't working. Not even lighting up. I'm hoping the anti-static is the issue.
Another question that little card you took out though that looks like a USB is that the sound source for the eject and power button beeps and I think that card is the built in Wi-Fi let me know once you read this question you should work on the brand-new Xbox 360 E 250 gig next
I guess it goes without saying that you really should not have driven the car without coolant in it. When an engine gets damaged from overheating, it's not just a gasket that gets damaged, it's usually something much more expensive. Like the entire head, or the pistons, or crank bearings. I can't post a URL here, but do what Eric says and join the EricTheCarGuy forums and ask your question(s) over there.
Jungle Flasher will restore the key code from the broken dvd drive to any replacement drive. Might as well flash the drive with new firmware while the xbox is apart.
idk if the slims r the same as the fats but on the fats you could just buy the same model dvd drive and swap the pcb over from the old drive to the new drive because the key is stored on the pcb so moving it wouldnt cause problems with the key.
FYI, you cannot just replace "POOF YOUR DONE" the dvd, the mainboard and the dvd control board have encryption keys to help keep the pirates at bay. when replacing the dvd you have to transplant the control board to the new drive.
When you where removing the Disk reader you said you could maybe replace it, did you mean get the same version of disk reader or a just a normal 5 inch disk reader, if so I could just take the disk reader in my pc and use it for my xbox. Also are you awere of what kinds of connection, which the disk reader is using?
thanks for the video, very easy to follow and shows what needs to be done unlike other video's manged to take my xbox slim apart without an issue but unfortunately it never solved my problem with the disk drive struggling to read a disk
Grant Wilson there's probably somthing wrong with the magnet in the disc drive but be careful the motion that occurs through the xbox when your tapping it as it reads could cause the disc to overread and burn what ever disc inside of the xbox.
do you just replace the optics or do you have to program it again. Your video really helped me and was very useful, I was very happy. I subscribe for u 😁👍
Nice video Eric definitely comes in handy. After this repair I'll never waste a dime on the X Box system.2 years and problems already that's just ridiculous.I have a colleco system and original Nintendo system which both still works perfectly without any repairs.Profit over quality just don't work and in the end ms will lose customers.
It may seem like a pain but if you get a large hard drive like a 250gb to 500gb and install each game you play on the hard drive first before you play, the DVD drive will only be used when loading the game at the beginning, after that the game is played off the hard drive which will let the game play and run faster and your DVD drive will last longer and probably not have this problem again.
i got my xbox fixed 3 years ago because the laser wasn't working and watching this video, i just realized that the people who fixed or got me a new laser didn't reattach the dust seal...and now my xbox is having trouble reading disks again...i blame the people who fixed my xbox, they didn't think it would be important but they were wrong it is important...hopefully i can open my xbox and clean the laser.
Thank you for this! I got my 360 S taken apart and put together fairly easily, and I [mostly] got my problem fixed. There's still one game that won't read (RockSmith 2014), but the rest I have seem to work. Something I noticed that I would like to point out to other viewers, is that the laser on my 360 didn't look dirty at all, however the track that spins the disc had a thin ring of filth around the edge (which created a loss of friction for spinning the disc). I used a cotton swab and 70% Isopropyl Alcohol to clean it off.
True story. when the PS2 first came out a friend got one for his bro and it basically lived in a constantly smoke filed house. The owner took the ps2 home one day after months of use in a smokey enviroment and it wouldnt read discs. Sprayed the lens with carb cleaner let it sit for a few days started working again. we were amazed
thanks for this video man, it was what i was looking for. does the torx screwdriver is hollow on the tip?, i've seen that they sell two kinds of these screwdrivers and i just need to buy the right one. thanks!

True you can't just replace the whole drive like he says. He's completely wrong there. And his disassembly is atrocious..

I see their logos all the time when flying to work each morning.) to get them to comply.
Thanks! Worked out great
Had a hard time finding a detailed video like yours
That's great Eric I'm losing patience with mine and was gonna smash it to pieces and that's the 3rd 360
Good stuff man I followed. All the step and put back together and it still didn't work
But I smack the CD drive with my controller no more beeping sound when u eject great tutorial keep it up u saved meh 375.00 I was going to buy a xbox 1
cleaning the laser with a qtip and alcohol wont harm the laser. ive done it lots of times and it lasts years. its just dirt and oil from touching disks with your fingers instead of on the sides.if that don't work just by cleaning it, then you can tweak it those little screws on the back of the laser is a potentiometer you can decrease the resistance going to the laser to increase voltage and make it read again if done that to and they work for years longer. air duster = bad for dvd drive goodvid
Great advice, klong1972. He should get all 4 corners of the xbox up off the ground for the extra working room.
20 seconds into this video my xbox decided to read the disc. I kept watching out of curiosity, I think my xbox was shittin itself in the corner.
Life saver, used a blue shop rag with 90% rubbing alcohol, don’t want to speak to soon but it is running smoother than ever! Edit worked for a day lol but atleast I know it’s the disc drive
Thanks u so mutch for helping me fixed my x box in about roughly an hr thanks to u I love how detailed u are and take ur time thanks u once again
Great video thanks. It worked and I managed to blow the dust off the laser which read perfectly after that.
This is great, my xbox360 has a very loud fan and the disc read error. I know it's very dusty and needs a good clean this helped out
you are a Jack of all trades~! Eric the game guy now
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!! This video really worked and I saved a lot of money, I just had clean the lens and it worked!!!
I just watched an 40 Minute Video about repairing an XBOX, yet, i neither own, nor am interesting in owning a Xbox.
Weird.
Will the laser lens from any other disc reader for example a PC disc drive work to replace it? Or does it need to be a specific Xbox 360 Slim laser..?
When you where removing the Disk reader you said you could maybe replace it, did you mean get the same version of disk reader or a just a normal 5 inch disk reader, if so I could just take the disk reader in my pc and use it for my xbox.
Also are you awere of what kinds of connection, which the disk reader is using?
thanks for the video, very easy to follow and shows what needs to be done unlike other video's
manged to take my xbox slim apart without an issue but unfortunately it never solved my problem with the disk drive struggling to read a disk
Same here ugghh Anyone else know why
if i tap on my xbox's side when its trying to read a disc it will read it. I am waiting it to die any moment though
my xbox has been like that for about a year and always works with the tapping above the disk tray when starts reading
Thank you so much! You're good with this tech stuff. (y)
Breaking the gray piece on the bottom (hdd side) of the Xbox is not required Eric. You can remove it as one piece along with the bezel.
Edit: I should watch the whole video before I comment
Why did I get recommended a video for a problem I had 8 years ago lol. It ended up fixing itself when moving to a different apartment
It may seem like a pain but if you get a large hard drive like a 250gb to 500gb and install each game you play on the hard drive first before you play,
the DVD drive will only be used when loading the game at the beginning,
after that the game is played off the hard drive which will let the game play and run faster and your DVD drive will last longer and probably not have this problem again.
Thanks my guy. This helped a lot!
the motor that moves the laser head is commonly called a stepper motor. I just thought I would toss that in, in the event another video comes up. :D
i got my xbox fixed 3 years ago because the laser wasn't working and watching this video, i just realized that the people who fixed or got me a new laser didn't reattach the dust seal...and now my xbox is having trouble reading disks again...i blame the people who fixed my xbox, they didn't think it would be important but they were wrong it is important...hopefully i can open my xbox and clean the laser.
Should you take a can of air with a nozzle and open the door and blow on the lazer through the door before you open up the unit?
14:07 it can happen
30:21 You know you can buy an air filter for the compressor in order to remove water (and other types of impurities) from the compressed air, right?
thanks for this video man, it was what i was looking for. does the torx screwdriver is hollow on the tip?, i've seen that they sell two kinds of these screwdrivers and i just need to buy the right one. thanks!
