The music for the ident and for the whole of BBC News was composed by David Lowe and incorporated elements such as the BBC Pips, used on BBC Radio to mark the hour. This version was used during the countdown sequence shown on BBC News 24 (now known as the BBC News channel), just before the top of the hour news bulletin.
Various images, originally ivory numbers fully animated against a deep red background, were designed to fit the pace of the channel, and the music soon gained notoriety, and was often satirised and parodied in popular culture, perhaps most famously by comic Bill Bailey who likened the theme music to an "apocalyptic rave".
It was still used as of this day, with the music itself being revamped a few times, most recently in 2013, to coincide with the move of BBC News to Broadcasting House.

    Amazing theme from David Lowe.
    It'll never be beaten.
I've got the cd that has four versions on it, in my cd collection.

It didn’t include the main bulletins One, Six and Nine, as this was only a Promo.

For the original the pips changed at five but nowadays they change when the countdown hits ten

Actually I was wrong because it’s only certain times when the pips change at five. My bad…

Only the world countdowns in 2002 and 2003 had the pips change at 5

No. In the 1999 countdown, the pips would change when it hits 10. Nowadays, it changes when it hits at 09.

@@itsreeyah that’s because they use seconds:frames or milliseconds.
For example, 15:23 is still 16 seconds. I found that out a while back.
