- Professor Parkins is spending the winter holiday improving his golf at the seaside town of Burnstow when he makes a strange discovery at the site of an old monastery. But what is the secret of the whistle he finds? And when he blows into it has he roused more than the wind?

#ghoststoriesforchristmas
A day early, here's my rendition of this classic M. R. James tale. Everyone is invited to listen to the Postmortem Christmas special:
ruclips.net/video/zeUrmRIy660/видео.html
This is my last story upload of the year. Happy Christmas everybody...and see you in the New Year! 🎉
This is my third listen to this story, and it still makes me shiver; the total innocuousness of the monster, the fact that it's blind and darting around feeling for Parkins... the bit where its arm brushes his face!
I'm wondering if it's success (in some small part) lays in it's relatability: who wasn't held trapped beneath the bedclothes by older brothers or sisters who wouldn't let you out no matter how much you screamed and cried?
Well read Jasper, thank you. I'll listen to PM tomorrow. Merry Christmas to you and yours, and enjoy the well earned break! 🎄⭐
I can't tell you how much I adore your readings! Spot-on accents, emotive and accurate - what a treat for someone like me who loves a bedtime story🥹
Thank you! Glad you like them 👍
This is an amazing story! Love the narration! The background noise and music make itvso mich easier to follow because we can hear what is going on.
I always laugh at the part when he blows the whistle in the middle of the night.
The indomitable spirit of the Colonel in this story is awesome. Like many of us military folks, he does not disbelieve something he has not seen.
This story always does it for me. Turn of the screw always puts me to sleep.....not this one! The image of being chased on the beach early, and the narrator not necessarily realizing it, sets the tone early.
Fantastic job, sir!
These folks who wrote 120+ years ago knew how to get it done....and without all the blood and gore!
Published a whopping 120 years ago and yet it remains a very frightening story, at least for me. Your narration put me right there in his shoes.
Agree.
This guy has the best horror/ghost story voice!
Thank you so much. Really loving these stories even in September. Takes me back to when I was a child & my late Father loved to read old mysteries by the fire. I would contentedly read my own books. I loved the silence between us 💖
That's the best audio version available ....brilliant just brilliant 👏 👌 😀
Great job Me Jasper. I love MR James just reading his stories currently.
One of my favourite MRJ’s stories. I’ve heard/read it several times and it’s still spine chilling.
Well, it's midsummer now, but this classic loses nothing for all that, either in content or quality of reading.
It was really enjoyable. 🌹
Thankyou. I’m. Listening to the story while at work on night shift.
Glad to keep you (spooky) company! Happy Christmas 😊🎄🎁🙏
Jasper, you are the masper of these types of tales. I love Mr. James stories so much, and they are the perfect expository vehicles for showing off your mad talent for helping develope the male characters a least as far as the author intended with literary nuance. Eg, the exchange in the opening scene between the scholars, getting "a good one" in on their fellows with the friendly banter, and verbal shuckin' and jivin'. "No, thank heaven", said RUDE MR. ROGERS, practicing upon his knowledge of these etc. Etc. Love it love it love it
Also interesting is the nugget which displays the levels of ignorance both Rogers and Parkins share of the works of Mr. CHARLES DICKENS, if one is fortunate enough to find it.
It's all the incidentals that make MRJ so fun to read (aloud). You get the impression his original audience would have been chortling in recognition and picking up on the various literary references. Wonderful stuff!
Merry Christmas Bobby! 😊
Thank you sir, hope you enjoyed yours as well, and happy new year. (Yes, I often imagine those dry, stodgy post victorian academics restraining chuckles during those candlelit readings. What fun to transplant oneself through time into these settings.)
Oh, that is spot on, fella!! Brilliant version of an old favourite. Housepoints all round 😀♥️
Thank you kindly 🙏
Extremely well narrated! Thank you 🙏
This and casting the runes are my favourite monty tales. Both extremely creepy
Yep, two of the best for sure! Thank you Carbonated Cat Soup 😁. Merry Christmas! 🎁
As always love the sound effects
Yeah yeah... I've heard this one before. Read the story, bought the t-shirt...
But never enjoyed it so much.
Thank you Mr LeStrange.
Your pedantry is actually appreciated, and I applaud your attention to detail.
Speaking of such; did you watch "The Detectorists"?
There is a lovely little Easter egg, homage to the whistle near the end of series three.
Good luck find you in 2024, the Goats of Christmas future not haunt you, and the ghosts of Christmas pasta not repeat on you.
🌕✨🌫🌨🐐🐐🐐

I began listening to this at dusk on Christmas Eve. I'm sure Monty's friends and students listening 120 years ago could not have enjoyed the story more.

Thanks Jasper, top quality as always. Merry Christmas to you!
Back atcha, as they say! 😁
1903-before the madness of the 20th century kicked in
Like all Monty James a LOT going on. From monks who were condemned for being bad (very lol) catholics to the sceptical professor and the feast day of big JC's sceptical freind Thomas 😂etc etc.....although he would have found any discussion of these things offensive.
A brilliant reading 📖 is what I will actually say.
