This is such a great exploration, I've always been confused (+ disturbed) with mobile game ads and it's so nice to see someone delve into them to find out WHY they're like that, really well as well. Thank you so much!
I sat thru these ads just for you, I purposely avert my gaze whenever any ads play because I refuse to engage the companies or give them space in my brain
I adore the gaze where during the ad analysis while an ads playing so much and the darkglasses making it unable to see you eyes makes it so so great !!
I was going to just do a generic comment to give an algorithm boost but this is a topic I have actually had thoughts about before, and thoughts I've not seen anyone else mention. One of the reasons I think advertisements like this are Like That ™ is they are also trying to appeal to a demographic that they feel are most likely to actually click the ads which I believe to primarily be conservative - Gen X-to-Boomer aged, and often but not always a bias towards women. Whether or not they actually are the people most likely too, the app store market and sterotypes of demographics have lead advertisers to try to appeal to them. The main themes of these are traditionally conservative narratives with themes of nuclear families, heroic rescues of damsel in distress, homemaking and parenting. They are overwhelmingly heterosexual and white. And the adverts often intentionally choose to use a very stereotypically feminine hand-of-god controlling them when demonstrating the 'gameplay' as if to directly declare their target demographic. There is also another common trope amongst these adverts you didn't mention where they will show two different streams of gameplay - one titled "Dad" with very poor gameplay - one titled "Mom" with very good gameplay - drawing on the classic trope of the incompetent dad and the doing-all-the-work mother seen often in sitcoms. The reason these seem so absurd and scan so uncomfortably to typically Millennial and Gen Zed youtube commentators, people who have been grown up with an ingrained ability to tune out the hypersaturated advertising we have been exposed too since childhood, is because they are not trying to grab us. They're not speaking youtube hardcore 1337 gamer language, they're speaking the language of your boomer tory aunt who spends all day on her Ipad sipping Gin&Tonic in the living room alternating between pro-trump facebook groups and WordPuzzleClickGame. Someone who amongst all other things doesn't have that same level of critical thinking of how different the level of evil mobile game advertising is compared to regular advertising (which is still evil) This is an unfiltered, unregulated ecosystem of conservative absurdist comfort food in plain sight - often directly put in our faces. Also unrelated - Shoutouts to the game "Yeah! You Want "Those Games," Right? So Here You Go! Now, Let's See You Clear Them!" which is a Warioware style minigame collection of spoof parodies of mobile game adds by the devs of Katamari Damacy. That is the healthy way to indulge in these games without actually giving any time to the companies that use these manipulative practices. e
