    Might have been nice to acknowledge the passing of Brett Mullins, the owner of HiFi Heaven and the store that you bought. He was a good guy and this video feels like gleefully picking through the belongings of a dead man. Yeah, it's a delicate balance, but maybe just a tip of the hat at some point would have been nice.

    • @Sirmooses

      When you're buying estate stuff it would be weird to mention whoever owned it unless you personally knew them. I can't pin down the exact reason atm but it feels wrong to bring up whoever's stuff it was when you have no connection to them.

      @@Sirmooses This is different than buying from a nameless estate. HiFi Heaven was a well-known audio store/repair shop in the same general area that was around for decades. I'm sure the folks at Just Audio were familiar with Brett and his business. Seems kind of cold just to ignore him.

    Nice find- I worked with Brett Mullins over 40 years ago at Atlantis Sound in Falls Church. Brett was the company service manager and at the time Atlantis had around 30 stores on the east Coast from Boston to Richmond. Brett was a technical genius. Also a great guy. Wish you would have talked a little about what Brett meant to Audio Community in the DC area. Passed way to soon.

    Very cool purchase and a great looking shop that clearly had tons of love put into it. That said, I checked the listings and the prices listed are pure comedy. $4k for a Pioneer SX-1050 😂 even in the current inflated market that is delusional.

      An overhauled SX-1980, a far bigger, heavier, more complex unit, might sell for $2G's (it costs about a grand in parts and labor to make them reliable), but 4 grand for an SX-1080 is insane. I knew Brett Mullins, who owned this shop, HiFi Heaven in Falls Church, as a customer and he worked on a number of pieces for me over the years. Brett was a true original and very gifted with electronics. He was also a great storyteller and I knew when I was going to be stopping by HiFi Heaven chances were high that it would be an hour plus trip, but worth it always. I'm glad this stuff is staying local, and that all those unfinished projects are going to get seen through to the end. But I thought your video shortchanged the talented tech who assembled this collection in the first place by just skipping over him, and not even acknowledging his death....I don't know man, it all feels kind of off, all focus on just the business of it and not so much on the human part of this place.

    That Fanfare FTA-100 is a fairly rare tuner. It's one of the few AMAX certified component tuners with C-QUAM AM-stereo. While the AM sections of most tuners made over the past 40-50 years begin to roll off audio between 2-4kHz, that Fanfare is among the few with a wideband AM section that will extend up out to 10kHz (which is the maximum AM stations can broadcast analog audio in the US). Being AMAX certified, it also features advanced noise blanking, and follows the NRSC-1 audio de-emphasis curve that many stations use today. Awesome find.

Not only does the rubber suspension dry up and lose elasticity elasticity but there are crimped connections to the coils inside and sometimes they oxidize and you lose continuity. It's fine if you pass by the boring speakers, 'cause they're not your jam, but if you find some interesting speakers you should definitely pause to cover them. Decks, turntables, and especially amplifiers are really cool, but they're useless without speakers. So don't discount them too quickly. The Tandberg TCD-3004 (The Original) was up to Nak Dragon standards. ...and I'm a Nakamichi fanboy. I used to work at a Stereo store, in the 80's and the boss took me to see a new Tandberg line. Tor Siverstein, of Tandberg, showed us the line, had a TCD-3004 taken apart, etc. It was a tank with very cutting edge technology. Unfortunately, they still used Tandberg grease, which tended to seize over the years.

    • @harrisfogel6992
      @harrisfogel6992 Год назад

      The Tandberg was arguably the best sounding and performing deck of its time. I remember when it came out, it was shown at Henry Radio in Anaheim, CA, and we were all just blown away that a cassette could sound so good. Mated to it's matching receiver, it really showed what the future was like. I don't think the Nakamichi was available just yet. I was in junior high school, and my mom would drop me off, so I could buy parts, and then listen to unaffordable audio! It was also when the Thelma Houston "I've got the music in me" Sheffield Direct to Disc came out, so it was a great lesson. The speakers were Ohm Acoustics, early generation, and it was also the first time I heard the DBX Noise Reduction system for turntables to get the clicks and pops out.
      So, when we heard the Tandberg, up against other components, it was remarkable. I think they also made some recordings, and then A/B the Thelma Houston on vinyl, vs the Tandberg recording.

    I liked the AR5's. These were sleepers. Did not go down as low as AR3a's. Sounded really good but did not sell well as they were not that much cheaper than the 3's. Problem with all the vintage AR's and JBL's: those problematic L-pads. Henry Kloss was smart there - he either did a simple three-way toggle that phased in resistors or nothing. I really prefer nothing - less to go wrong.

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 2 года назад +1

      Having fiberglass insulation stapled to the inside of the cabinets meant that fiberglass ended up in the L-pads, and of course the wire-wound resistor elements and wiper contacts oxidized over the years anyway. You could probably take them apart and polish the contacts, but it might be easier to just replace them.

I have seen most of the stuff when it was still sold in retail stores. The urban legends about some of the vintage gear that is spread now by millennials makes me wanna cry. A lot (if not most) of the vintage hifi was hot garbage in a shiny box, you really had to know what was half decent not to waste your money… if you have listened to heavily compressed streaming audio thru Bluetooth speakers for your whole life than yeah this will sound 1000 times better but a lot of the stuff was just cleverly marketed mediocre at best components

    I still like my CR820 like the ones you show here. I find the sound good enough for me and aesthetically they are the best balanced looks of the Yamahas with a good combination of switches and tuning needle windows. The larger Yamahas have smaller windows and look out of proportion to me. The satin brush aluminum face and dials looks classier to me than either black or the more silvery look of other brands and I think the lighting is classier.

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 2 года назад

      I repaired a CR820 recently ---- it had about 30 small capacitors that were either leaking electrically (causing very noisy switches and controls) or actually leaking electrolyte and corroding the leads of the parts. The output was intermittent and it went into protection periodically because one of the driver IC's was bad and causing DC offset (we have a few in stock and were able to replace the bad one, but they're no longer available). The CR820 sounds pretty good but they suck to work on, and the tuner's not as good as some of their other models. I found it extremely annoying that the only parts on the circuit board that actually had silk screen numbers for the components with the transistors. None of the capacitors or resistors had silkscreened numbers on the board, which made it very difficult to troubleshoot. They cheaped out like this on some of their other units and and I find it extremely aggravating.

    • @davids.8459
      @davids.8459 2 года назад

      That is good to know. I hopefully got lucky with mine and will not have the same issues. I plan on opening it up again this year to spray the volume control as it is getting scratchy. Hopefully it is not something worse. Aside from that the only other issue with my system is a loud hum that comes intermittently from the phono when switched. Not sure yet as to cause. I do not work with electronics so have little experience with what is quality electrical components. I am only commenting on the units from a physical appearance and sound. I am sure there are better quality units available either for more money and maybe even the same money.

      I'd rather have a BX-300 or CR-7A, they're simpler to repair and more reliable. The RX202 and 505 were nice back in the day for recording FM broadcast concerts without interruption (they were the only units Nakamichi made with auto reverse recording capability) but nowadays thats not much of a draw. The people who bought those machines usually weren't audiophiles and they bought them because they were flashy andl cool, but because you can't see the or reach the tape heads easily almost nobody that owned those machines ever bothered to clean them, and the heads are usually badly worn from lack of maintenance.

    I only chance on your channel occasionally, I usually go for either EE or theory, or history, but no disrespect.
    One observation about this episode: Freeze-framing the test equipment, it might be worth as much as the audio equipment combined, as I'm sure your partner already knows! Just the stereo inspection scope, which I couldn't see the brand of, could still be worth _thousands_ as-is (glass doesn't go bad, oculars are replaceable.) I bet there's tons of frequency generators, power supplies, distortion analyzers, etc. That will make you a ton of money if your partner doesn't keep it!
    Besides that, if you're not a McIntosh fetishist, every NAD piece is a treasure. All of them. And, if I'm not hallucinating, you didn't point out a TEAC or similar Korean War-era "portable" reel-to-reel, tube throughout and modular. These sound *amazing*, as do the Sansuis which frequently have a similar provenance if from the 60s (GIs bringing them home after buying them and using them on base.) If that is one of those folding, portable, modular power and pre reel-to-reels from the late 50s, you have to give a listen while it lives; unfortunately, they also tend to have unobtanium, as do the early germanium PNP transistor equipment.
    So yeah, dig deeper to get viewers like me! And do a video on the test equipment if you can.

    You have got your work cut out for you. I worked part time for 35 years in a family owned electronics repair, and it looked remarkably like that (although we primarily did TVs, I got everything else plus the ones the technicians couldn't fix). We had a pile of stuff when the owner retired that we had to dispose of as the building was rented. It was primarily composed of items that the customers didn't want repaired, and we didn't feel would turn a profit if we repaired and resold. Now time may have altered the demand for many of those items, and it looks like your source was better than the shop I was in for keeping the items together, but I would put money on most of them needing repair. Anyway, looks like a nice find if the price was right.

      The brand names mean nothing if there all broken, as you say, sold "as is" on auction and pray someone else can repair them under a labour of love......
      The guy seems positive, and i think he will spiel his way into selling alot of the stuff, as i read many of the comments saying they would like, but will they pay?......
      If its an ongoing business, he proberly could make a go of it just on the exhisting clientèle, and the stock is just something he can make alittle back on...... over quiet a while and effort if he can repair it all...... i dont envy his position here, but i guess he is no fool..... good luck, im sure he will survive, and as many have said.....
