I discovered a collection of vintage hifi & vintage audio by Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio that took almost 50 years to build. It was located in a store called Play It Again Sam.

I used to go there 22 years ago, I’m so happy he is still there. They also did excellent work on components. I sold him my 6 foot magnaplanars. I remember when the owner bought his first mini copper. All the best
When I was growing up in the sixties and seventies the catalogs like Allied Radio, Lafayette, Olson, Burstein and Applebee, and Heathkit were like my "wish books". This is kind of like a visual tour of the kind of stuff in those catalogs. It still moves me in some hard to verbalize way.
What a store! The prices make the items attainable too.
See these prices tells me to not go to eBay !! For sure.
Its like stepping into a time machine. such a cool place.
awesome video!!!! great find, keep up the amazing journey of vintage audio goodness! best place yet.......cheers Lenny!
One thing I noticed about this place are the prices are affordable. That's saying a lot considering how some places will nickel and dime you to death over vintage audio.
Yeah, but the owner is a jerk.
His prices were great
That Dytnaco preamp was a PAT-4 not a PAS-4. The p a t series was solid state; the p a s series was vacuum tube. Their last preamp in the p a s series was the three, not the four.
Very Cool Find o Bearded one!
I love great case work. So there is that. Down here in Dallas we still have a guy who changes out the ferro fluid that dry out. The fixes that they applied in back in the day should still be viable to an extent.
Great store and thank you for updating us as always! You provide a wealth of knowledge and experience on your adventures.
Absolutely fantastic Man! Lenny you are a great presenter!
Thanks so much!!
Olson was a small-town version of Lafayette. They were a DIY electronics shop that offered house-brand HiFi equipment and surplus electronics. They gave up the ghost in the early 80's.
You are certainly finding some amazing treasure troves. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all.
Think of the work it took to assemble that inventory. What a collection.
Looks like an awesome store🎉 and prices on lots of those components were very reasonable!.. although some of the speaker prices were high
The guy who owns it is a jerk.
@@wexplo15sounds like you didn't have a very enjoyable experience there. Would you mind saying what happened?
Linn have made some very famous speakers. Kan, Sara and Isobarik being their most notorious, (both the Sara and Isobarik at 82dB efficient, were particularly difficult loads to drive, requiring amplifiers with huge power and current output). They also made some really luxurious lifestyle speakers from bookshelf size up to very big floor standers; expensive, too. their flagship pair were over £20K!
Back in the 70's in the middle of the Amp/Receiver wars it was a glorious time. In Syracuse Ny we had Gordons Music, Superior Sound and a Play it Again Sam store. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was buy a set of Klipschorns, "Their forever Buddy", done. After that I was adding receivers, reels to reels and power amps at will, especially used stuff that my friends were giving away cheap for the next best thing. I just kept adding equipment to my storage room alongside my collection of old radio's everyone was throwing out. Still have all of it, a basement full. Just set my daughter up with a Sherwood 9910, a B&O Linear Drive turntable and a set of KEF 104's. Sometimes I just put on some music and sit and look at the logo's. Sunn, Crown, McIntosh, Ampeg, Kenwood, Sansui, flooded with memories and sound.
I live in upstate NY. What's the best vintage hifi store now?
When I die I hope that they have vintage stereo equipment in heaven 🙏🏻
It couldn't be heaven if there weren't awesome music and great equipment to play it on!
Know them well for 35 years, live very close again now that I am back in Cleveland area.
Amazing Vinyl collection there. Huge fan of VHS as a daily driver for anything actually including production work/creating content.
Great prices, seen worst. I really enjoyed this is 😊
Awesome store, I could get lost in there for hours and hours ….
One of the first things I noticed is how reasonable the prices are !
Great store find thanks for the video!
Wow Thanks for bringing us the content!!!
That's one way to avoid a remodel! Have to plan a trip to Ohio for Summer Vacation! Another great find Lenny!
The store is in Lakewood, OH. A cool little town.
Heaven!!!
Awesome!
I can’t believe that Marantz 2270 is only $799 I want it .
Krell legendary FPB💯❤️
That was a cool video tks
Definitely gonna be a fun one
Love watching these videos so awesome the history in them
Cool video! I live in the area and have been there many times. They have been around for decades with a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. The first thing I ever bought there was a pair of Peerless woofers, mids and tweeters for a high school speaker project in 1979. That may have been the year they opened, but not sure. I am still using a pair of GAS Son of Ampzilla power amps that I got there years ago. Also a Project turntable and Blue Point Special cartridge that I got new. So they also sell some new stuff too and also do repairs. It's a cool store like visiting a hi fi museum.
Hi Lenny. I so enjoy your channel. Very informative and educating. It's good to see so much stuff still out there. I do collect receivers and am so delighted when you come across never-heard-before names to some of us. Finally, is it possible to turn the volume down on the background music? It kind of competes with you. Thanks brother for what you provide us collectors. 👊🏼
Thanks so much! Glad you are enjoying it! I did notice I had the volume on the background music a little loud on this one, appreciate the feedback for sure!
Bonjour de France.
J'adore.
Thanks for another great video! I listen to records and my next purchase will be all tube. Currently running a denon receiver from the 90’s that I found in a dumpster years ago.
all the nice DBX enhancer nice !!!
Wooster vintage auto in Wooster ohio. Nice place to check out.
@@c17jl4 is that store located in the downtown area. My nephew live in Wooster maybe I’ll pay him a visit and also that store.
Great stuff! Really enjoying your trips. Gives an interesting perspective on how much of it is available in old school brick and mortar locations scattered across the country. Interestingly in some small locations.
I’m highly enjoying it as well!
@@LennyFlorentine CLE
@@LennyFlorentine You definitely seem to be!
Wow! Lenny that is COOL! I'm from Ohio and need to go there. Great video. 👍✌️😎
Tell them I said hi!
Those Quicksilver Horn Mono's are some of the quietest tube amps ever made. If you're into tubes, you could certainly do a lot worse ❤
I wish we had stores like this in the UK.
We have at least one, look up RPM Analog Audio!
Right On Lenny
Good Too See You
10x better dan modern stuff.
I know, is still have those ,and use it every day.
Greetings from Holland
That KENWOOD "Noise Reduction" box (KF-6011)has a set of Very Steep NOTCH Filters. It's use was to Increase the Signal to Noise Ratio.
Hello Captain Sub: Thank you Lenny for this vintage audio store review. Compared to the easy coast these prices are very reasonable. You toured their repair department but can these guys repair all the stuff you use to back at Just audio. Some of this equipment looks like it could use a little help. Lenny, safe travels & stay safe. TMP from N.J. 👍
Ooooooooowie!!! Me likes a lot.💯💯💯
The Linn speakers were the “Sara” model, the Sondek is name of their LP12 turntable.
You mentioned the symposium as a speaker it was actually a vibration isolation platform that was just sitting on top of a tower speaker. Symposium makes great stuff!
@ 5.10 Linn has made speakers almost since the company started 51 years ago. Those are the Sara 9 Isobarik speakers, and are from the late 1980s.
@ 5.30 Those are Acoustat Spectra 11, which is a big electrostatic panel sitting on a woofer box. From about 1989.
I can never keep up with speakers but even I’m wondering how I didn’t know about those
that old sherwood receiver is amazing good , no new one comes near it´s quality in sound
Great place. Im in Akron and love that place.
Olson made in Akron Ohio just 45 min south of Cleveland. Im from and live in the area. I have a few Olson receivers and other pieces. I like to have and collect local history in my stereo collection.
I really enjoyed the style in which you used to make videos. This new format with bed music and voice over doesn't carry the same level of "what will he find next" excitement. I think it was this that kept me watching in the past. It was difficult to turn away because you never knew what would come into frame next. You could hear the genuine excitement in your voice via inflection when you'd come across something special and unique. Voice over narration can't capture that. Just the opinion of one viewer out in RUclips land. Thanks for the work you do.
I get it, unfortunately I’ve had to do this due to people in the background talking or music playing because these stores are actually open when I’m there. Great feedback though! Thank you!!
It’s so nice to see price tags on everything.
Awesome. My parents just moved to the Cleveland suburbs. Will have to check them out when over there.
That’s great!
Great find for that Lafayette unit. What happened to your documentary on Lafayette Radio? It was awesome. So many of your old videos are gone :( What happened?
You’ve never seen Linn speakers before?!
They have made speakers for almost as long as the LP12 and through the mid 70s to mid 80s had a very close working relationship with Naim… both brands diversified from around 1986 and went their separate ways.
Linn have made some proper cult classics and have been majorly invested in separate active crossovers for their speakers, and over the past decade or so have been making world class DSP crossovers which integrate with their digital streaming preamplifiers.
I have four pairs of Linn speakers in the house including active Kabers, Keilidhs, Ninkas and Katans. Look them up, they’re pretty decent!
That audio refinement integrated amp is an excellent 50 watt integrated made by YBA, if you see one of those grab it, unbelievable build quality
I owned a Kenwood KA 601, they advertised themselves with monstrous slew rates but what I remember is that handful of a smooth volume knob....
Oh my look at all that gold...I know it sounds so good...
That store is the rusult of the shortsighted rush to streaming.
Wow.
Saw the Frenzel……..I have a Frenzel amp I use for a guitar amp driving a Jensen p12n speaker in custom tweed cabinet. Sounds incredible with my Teles and Strat guitars. They are out of Texas if memory serves me.
I have always dreamed of owning a Marantz AM/FM Stereo Receiver!
Great vid as always do you ever see something that's super rare or a must have that you buy for yourself from other stores ? ... I would have a car full that's why my wife won't let me out the house alone 🤣 ...
Those LINN Speakers use ISOBERIC Loading (a 2nd Active Bass Driver INSIDE the Box to increase BASS Response.)
i saw a tuner and amplifier there from mid 70´s or earlier Denon that the tuner as in both sides VU or power meters but one as to connect some wires from the amplifier up to the tuner , so the power meters can work or they would stay off
Been there several times. Quality equipment. No junk.
Thanks for sharing!
I have a 2270, but it's the Lafayette LR 9090. I had one. It is excellent. It was actually a Setton 90 watts per channel receiver.
I was there a month ago. It’s awesome, I almost bought those dalqwist speakers.
This store is so awesome it makes me want to make a field trip, it's only 1414 miles round trip 🤔. I see there is a store in Michigan and Maryland with the same name, is it a chain of vintage shop?
I don’t think it’s a chain
Road trip!
You show beautiful shops, but it's a pity it's so far from Poland.
I’d love to visit Poland! Never been there
The owner is so rude to his customers you’d regret your visit.
@@wexplo15wouldnt you be if the customer wanted to test "The one at the bottom"
It's 5 miles from my house , been there lots of times in the past 30 yrs 😊
Dahlquists. Not enough is said about them. My favorites. Saul Marantz was one of the founders of Dahlquist.
Hey that’s my neck of the woods! Born in Cleveland and grew up in the west side suburbs. I didn’t know that store survived Covid. Thrilled to see it here. I’ve lived in neighboring Medina County since fall of ‘93 but I now will plan a visit. Perhaps they can help me with my Akai AP-D210 fully automatic turntable that I love but haven’t figured out how to replace the stylus or the cartridge without breaking it. I have an Audio Technica AT-LP120 too but like the Akai better. Or maybe I'll let them talk me into something else like a Technics!
Hey Eddie I just spent the weekend in Brunswick . I’m living down in Dayton but am from Cleveland and later Medina county.
Where is this store . Next time I visit my sister I wan to go to this store.
@@jeffconley819 it’s on Madison Ave in Lakewood.
@@erieeddie8683 oh thankyou .
Man I was so close. I drove the metro park all the way to the golf course then turned around and drive back to Strongsville . Then just headed back home.
Now that I know that store is there on my next visit I know where I’m going.
Plus I have a receiver that’s not working maybe they can fix it for me.
@@erieeddie8683 my family was all raised up in Lakewood before we moved out to the burbs.
Lived in CLE for 47 years. Was the tech at Coventry Audio during college. Never knew of this store b/c its West side. To all my Eastside friends the West side could be in another state.
I want those Krell amps!
Never seen Beveridge spkrs in real life.. Very cool story behind those speakers...
Oh really? What’s that
12:45 Below that Denon ( 80s to 90s Denon IS FANTASTIC) MIGHT JUST BE a COUNTERPOINT amp.....some of the BEST AMPS EVER MADE....as older audiophiles who have 50k+ systems (eg. read the remarks of Arthur Salvatore on his Recommended Components webpages)
Rotel and infinity used to have speakers huge ones with a similar wood work in it´s corners like those very tall but not that large
Hey Lenny! Love all the vids of the local store finds! Great stuff. Have you ever head of/seen a Samsung vintage Am/fm stereo receiver SS3490 1978 Silver? I found this back in Oct 2023 at a thrift store in great condition for under $11, and it hooked me back into any vintage stereo equipment and vinyl collecting. Just wondering. Thanks.
I’ve seen a few Samsungs, couldn’t tell you what models but they are more on the rare side, and it’s cool cause you wouldn’t think Samsung was around then
Es hermoso¡ Se tiene que mirar play-stop-play-stop y asi hasta el final
Wow great stuff B&W DM 7 when working in pawn shop also picked up in another pawn shop 125$ marantz 2300 I'm going back to the year 2000 how prices have changed
I’m surprised those shelves are holding up. 😳
Been in there a few times, live near by.
Have you gotten anything there?
Hard to comment on the speakers as you went by them so quickly. When you found the Lafayette Receiver, there were some speakers with a white grill on a wooden frame. Suspect it might be a vintage JBLs. Actually, you returned to it and confirmed my suspicions.
Yeah that was a hidden gem for sure behind that painted grill!
This store is so secret Gollum had to show you the right path to it‼️
Is that the AR Amplifier in the panning shot from 20:48 to 21:00 (with the wood cover and sitting directly on the 2 maybe-Pioneer speakers?). I had the AR receiver for years...
I know I am going to get some hate, but one thing I notice with these stores that have massive quantities of vintage audio is their prices. I have noticed that in the stores in Pennsylvania that we've seen, now one in Ohio and I know it happens here in Indiana where I live. I really wonder if they really sell this stuff at the posted prices on the hang tags. Regardless there is a reason for this level of stock of vintage audio and it is likely the prices.
They brought a ton of stuff out from the back and made sure it was all priced.
Дуже добре👍
Did you pick up that frequency meter? Fran lab demonstrated a very small version of that.
peace be upon you sir and zamzam water
That is close to me Lenny wish i knew you were in town could have grabbed a beer
Shoot me a text on my text line and next time I’m up there I may organize a meet up 4434025069
Any reel to reel in the store?
That’s about 10 miles from me. Done a few transactions there over the years.
I don't hear you talk about Onkyo or Denon stuff very often. Do you have an opinion? Do you remember Wisconsin Discount Stereo mail order? I used to love their magazine ads.
I have a very nice Sansui SC-5330 cassette deck I need repaired/restored. Who can you recommend?
I bought in new in 1980, in the Philippines, but it's set unused for years now. It worked when it was stored.
4:00 SONY ES DECK WITH
DOLBY S,,,😮😮😮
that TD125 is mazing good i have a late 60´s version and yet to find a more acurate turntable and not now in this things they sell like cartridges and turntable that read vinyl or wax and not like the more developed technology from early 70´s but people spend money on it, human mind when to win money or in this situation steal can make omoletes without eggs like this turntables as they are tables that turn but nothing more related with till 1999 old turntables technology, they came out with a thing cheaply built that also reads vinyl records or wax records(the coloured ones)
damn wish I knew you were in town could have met up and showed you a few other shops in the area
Shoot me a text, I’ll try and reach out next time 443-402-5069
3.45 the NAD'S!!!! there's at least 1 original 3020 there.
Are there any vintage hi fi warehouses in and around Chicago?
I just noticed it's best to turn the volume off and look he can tell you not one thing you don't already know
You could also turn on your stereo and listen to music. 🤣
5:42 ADS L880*, not 800. And that price is very good for what they offer sonically, but their condition - ehhhhhh...
I LIVE HERE and the last time I went in the guy who owns it treated me like I was unwanted and he was very rude to me. Check the google reviews. The owner has a screw lose, or something, with how he treats people. I love hi-if gear but this owner is “jarringly rude” as one google reviewer put it. The guy will lash out at you and insult you for no reason. He told me my hi-if was set up wrong and called me names. It’s a shame he’s such an asshole. He was so rude to me once I called the mayor of Lakewood to complain (the store is on Madison in Lakewood, not actually Cleveland).
Sorry to hear that. He was kind and helpful to everyone who came in while we were there, and happily let a strange dude with a beard film in his business.
I drove nearly 3 hours to see this store. Got there early so I could spend some time listening and money buying some vintage hifi .umfortunstely my wife and I were greeted very rudely as he and his young coworker yelled at each other and us over the phone not working properly. They never offered me any help and were more than excited when my wife and I decided to leave disgusted with their rudeness and lack of customer service after 10 minutes. It is a shame since there is so much nice stuff there. If your gonna own a store for consumers it might be a bad idea to be an asshole.
Rudeness or not, if he has that stereo you really want to buy at a good price, it's still worth it to endure their abuse.
Exactly. Bernie is quite knowledgeable, but can be very rude, for no reason. Just be aware of that going in.
@@brianludwig7That’s part of the fun and personality of the store
