Look, here is proof that Christine was once allowed to play PONR knowing it was the Phantom under the hood from the beginning. It irritates me that the actresses are reportedly directed to specifically play the scene as if she has no clue, acting coquettish. Her character is supposed to have taken the role under duress, frightened the Phantom would appear, and knowing men with guns were pointing her direction. She would be scared out of her wits.
when i watched it at the west end last night, it seems Christine is allowed to know it was the phantom from the beginning of PONR. the most recent cast has started to go back to the roots of the musical now i think! very pleased.
@andrewMacLaine - it should *ideally* be played with her on edge, but then she lets her guard down some as the scene goes on until she feels his mask through the cloak. But also that only really works if the Phantom is imitating Piangi's intentionally thick accent (see: Roma)
I saw it in Toronto in the 90’s at the Pantages Theatre. It was magnificent there. I can just imagine the original productions with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman must have even more spectacular.
There was another clip I saw with the production quality of masquerade and past the point with Crawford starting music of the night, so I assume they did a good video of the show. Really wish that would all be released.
sgillman16 I didn’t know that, but the quality’s probably pretty abysmal like the clips from documentaries you can find on RUclips. I’d love to see it, but I’m assuming that they don’t think they could justify selling a low quality recording.
the original cast video doesn't exist. these old clips are from 1987 filmed specially for tv....also these clips dont have John savident its Royce mills here. so far, no original video recording has been unearthed. however there is a full 1988 taped performance of the original broadway cast in the New York library. still awaiting its proper release.
1:02 during the pandemic I found this video and I fell in love with what Hal Prince said. How sad that both him and Gillian are gone. Hal should have directed the 25th concert. I'm sure he would have cast John Owen Jones, he deserved so much better. It should have been him and Katie Hall. That concert is a travesty. I so regret have looked up this show. ALW and Mackintosh are two mercenary scumbags.
Why won't he release a DVD of this 🙁. It looks like they did a professional filming of it, like it was intended to be released on video. I guess they didn't expect the success and are waiting till the show closes?
Malory Rackauckas It is. Michael Crawford mentioned in an interview that he basically had to feel around for the stairs because vision in the skull mask was very limited.
Wow how dated this looks. Been to see phantom for the first time ever at His majestys theatre london today. Amazing sets costumes and voices. Got a little uncomfortable sitting there for that long. I didn't enjoy all the scenes and the songs I didn't recognise so much. But amazing show well done. Great pyrotechnics we could feel the heat up in the grand circle !! And of course the crashing chandalier. Very clever how the candles come up through the stage. Xxx❤❤❤
I was so fortunate to have attended, not the premier, but the next night, the 2nd performance in London. One of the best experiences of my life
God, Blonde Carlotta! And Christine's white dress in Masquerade! I love this!
I know! I think this must be the only existing footage of Sarah Brightman in the original Masquerade costume.
I've seen a few photos and I think it's actually a light purple/blue! I like the Saloon Girl dress but I like the one we ended up with way more!
I prefer that one, the Star Princess doesn’t look very Victorian
The way they say "Let the spectacle astound you" at 3:48 gave me chills!

3:23 ITS CHRISTINES ORIGINAL MASQUERADE DRESS

The drummer is wearing basically the mask on the show logo.
Why have they never released the original performance on dvd???
Recording tech probably just wasn't there to make it worth a release.
@@Sam-xg3mr but they have a copy in the New York Public Library in an archive

this is really beautiful
Sarah Brightman was perfect casting as Christine, she has the voice of a nightingale and she is so beautiful 😁
And she masters the wide eyes of frightened to death look
they gonna log back into this account and find out there was a community looking for a lost song that they uploaded 13 years ago

I died at the disclaimer at the end. Shamelessly stolen. XD
So cool. Pre broadway
yes from the more important production and the original in London
This is the West End.
Broadway isn't the all important place of the world. Just America
Hi, we found a song that was unidentified that was on your channel, it was called Mary O’Hara theme
Could we watch the whole musical video of OLC or OBC in our life?
A blond Carlotta… now that is something!
3:27 he’s taking of course about Andrew Lloyd Webber 😂
Omfg 😂
I still maintain that Sarah Brightman should have played Carlotta in the movie.
Did the Red Death costume get changed slightly for the Broadway production?

John Savident isn’t in this. The clip of Masquerade, features Royce Mills as M. Firman
