  • I have worked in the bush, I live in the country, and I have traveled thousands of miles of dirt road here in north west, and I see it every were, the grader so called operators have no clue what there doing, for one on the side of the road a foot to a foot and a half from the ditch you see a really high berm of gravel up to 6 to 8 inch's highand up to 1-1/2 feet wide were they have plowed the gravel to the ditch, and heavy grass growing on it, this gose on mile after mile, water cant get off the road.. you stop the grader operator and ask why don't you pull that mound of gravel from the side to cover all the big rocks sticking out of the road, operators say, oh we cant do that, there's to much grass in that,, good god I say,, problem is, when you meet a grader on these roads up here, their blade is always angled to the dam ditch, plowing all the good gravel into the ditch, every few years you see a backhoe re-digging the ditch's, haling it away. the township have contractors lay down new gravel, because they say there is no material to work with, well they can lay down 6 to 8 inches of new gravel, ( which is not needed because there hundreds of tons on the sides) but in a year or 2 its gone, I go to the roads board meeting as asking why are our roads have totally gone after 2 years,,, funny, they say oh the heavy rains have washed it off, and we can't afford to re-do for a few years, how dam stupid, second, the grader operators, never cut all the washboard out to the bottom, they just skim it to fill in the low spots, after a few days its right back to what it was 2 days ago. it's a total joke, and the board doesn't lesson to you, there the ones that know it all. we have the worst roads . and the dumbest operators around, even I have known for many years it's not how you do it.

Here’s my 2 cents, in my experience as an operator and civil engineer, you want to try and not get that dirt from the edge of the road mixed in with your rock. Anything that’s expansive, you don’t want in your rock. The rock or aggregate, whichever you want to call it, has been designed by the quarry to be stable and create roads and things with. So blading the dirt into the rock will cause it to pump and rut. Other than that, after a day on a machine, you’re no longer a rookie, and it looks like you’ve got the hang of it. Good luck with your homestead, and be safe! 🤙

In your posting you're 100% correct on counties doing a lousy job of grading roads and what they don't understand is if they maintain them and fix them properly it would save them lots of money because they wouldn't have to be redoing them nearly as often. You definitely have to cut the washboards out or they're just going to come right back days later and they should use a water truck to wet the gravel as they're working and compacting it, every contractor knows that a road built dry won't hold up at all or get any compaction out of it and it'll fall apart fast. I think that they think that they're saving money on cutting edges. Lol... And definitely use the fabric mat between the dirt and gravel otherwise the dirt will just pump up through the gravel and you'll jus have the same problem but you already know all of this and it's very cheap insurance of not having problems down the road. No pun intended.

Just curious here so bear with me, for that curb of grass you are getting- can you take the front end of the grader and offset it to the right, take the moldboard all the way out to the right side and turn it nearly parallel to the length of the grader and run it with just the front edge dipping down to the bottom of that curb of grass and the back edge (by the operator) just high enough to finish it ~roughly~ to just under the height of the road bed? I mean, grass is going to grow there eventually any way, correct? and then there is some gravel mixed into the shoulder so it is firmer than just hopping off the road into mud. I just ask, I have not operated graders any but I have sat and watched the guys run them a few times, plus I don't have an idea how wide your road is.
Other question I have is, have you installed the hdpe pipe before? My friend, who did it for a living, says that the mule tape is notorious for shooting down in the pipe when you release it the first time and if you didn't tie and extra 100 foot length on it you would lose it.
If you already know these things, kindly disregard them; but they may help some viewer who is watching, so I hope it helps.
    thanks for the videos

HELLO, from chihuahua mexico, I just finished reading the notes and you look like, there is a problem in your town, the board is not ready for a professional, they don't know what they are talking about but they have the authority to manage the resources, I told you in a different occasion that I have a brother who is professional in the grading machine.

If you need to call him, he is in chihuahua mexico, he loves his work, in this moment I can let him know, you want to talk to him, I live in Nevada for now, yes I'm American citizen, he can help you with the roads.

It's the age old story with city and public works departments. The city workers are usually unionized and if they did things right the first time, there would be less work for them to do from year to year. So doing it poorly is a form of job security. It's no different with big cities with repairing pot holes. There are much better products then just putting in asphalt. Doing that the repaired pot hole lasts a week or so until the next freeze thaw cycle. When the city wants to use a different/better product, the city workers union resists for fear of losing out on future work. Which leads to the vicious circle of cities having the worst roads come winter and spring with all of the pot holes. At any given time there are hundreds of millions of dollars in backlog of road repairs because no one wants to do it right the first time.

If the soil is dry/course enough you don't get much heave, and you go too deep you're likely to run into rock which cost more to deal with once, then re-setting the line every twenty years.

I don't car how big the tractor is, you're not dragging conduit through a 20 ton boulder or rock shelf. A trencher with rock teeth will open a trench trough it but it's a whole different level of project.
