The descriptions for their sapphire crystal and stainless steel were lifted word for word from Omega’s website. The descriptions have since been shortened, but are still there word for word. I was excited for this but there are just too many red flags. Great first impressions review. Can’t wait for some hands on reviews to finally put this topic to rest!
HO-LY-CRAP! Good catch on this! Just confirmed and wow that's a big deal, especially after taking years to develop this brand. He needs to talk to whoever made his website.
Enjoyed this Steve! Didn’t have a clue who Dave was?! The watches do look very generic don’t they. Had they looked like your Base watches then it would feel more original . Non watch folk would have no clue! As soon as us guys come in to look into it, we can see it it’s worth it!!!!
I read your entire comment with your voice in my head hahaha. His pizza reviews are great and you should check them out before you come to the States so you know where to stop for a great slice but this watch appears to be in an odd area in terms of pricing. Thanks for your kind words on BASE btw!
Agree with your thoughts completely. Anyone with a few grand to spend will have the prerequisite knowledge on which goods are quality and which are not. Edit: Anyone that values money period will know
@@stevepapa i think its mainly for Portnoy fans and people who dont know jack shit about watches. I myself am not known for making smart watch purchases but at least i know what I'm getting in to. I feel bad for the person who buys a Brick watch with the expectation of any kind of value retention.
For his "Its for those who can afford a Rolex but don't need the status symbol"...Umm, I can afford Rolex, I've owned a few but have sold them except for 1 with sentimental attachment and I don't need the "Status Symbol" which is why I wear a Grand Seiko... Only other watch nerds would know the "Status" of said watch but its for me and I know the status and that's all I care about. There are tons of undercover wealth watch brands out there... these people think the only "Rich people" watch out there is Rolex or a Richard Mille (Thanks to rappers).
@@stevepapa he gets a 0.4 for this one. Honestly the automatic model could be priced at maybe $1600 IF the finishing is outstanding, but the quartz chronograph is a $650 watch all day, maximum.
Yeah I think his target market should have been the "every man". A value packed, affordable watch that makes you _feel_ like you're wearing something more expensive.
I have doubts the watch costs anywhere near 400. looking at the American Watch Company’s website (the company he apparently used based on the warranty address), I think you can even view pricing sheets for bulk orders on similar watches and see that. Also, i saw he plagiarized omega’s website for blurbs about the watches on their own site. That’s really goofy for a “luxury” brand.
People praising him for the 20% donations to the brick foundation aren't noticing that other than that statement attached to the watch sales page there is ZERO information out there regarding it. Who qualifies, how do you get in touch with them?, is it for real?... nothing.
Great points. Protnoy, who I love, really missed the mark on this. It's basically two part. He has two vanilla models that look very much like they was picked out of a mfgs catalogue. Then he priced it thinking he could use the price tag as the "luxury" part of the watch. Whomever helped him design and market this was not the correct person/company. Just for reference we use similar movements, donate to charities and assemble in the US and not selling at those price points.
Yeah I definitely think he didn't do enough research into the market before launching. Looking at competitors that do similar things or offer similar designs. The build quality _may_ be top tier, I don't know, but from what is on the website, it doesn't look like anything special. I think he underestimated how much competition is out there and the 20% he's "donating" to the Brick Foundation is included in the price of the watch.
Even if the watch cost him $500 to make the typical markup is 3x, which would be way less than $2400. He's selling online so he doesn't have the typical expenses , so why does he need that kind of margin
I think where the $40 came from is that it is the price per unit of the cheapest watch the manufacturing/assembly company produces. The picture of the watch shown with the $40-something price was not the Portnoy watch.
As someone who has over 20 years in manufacturing products , He is not manufacturing anything. They are assembled at best in the usa and by assembled. I mean taken out of a big box and put into a smaller box for resell.
I think he got suckered by his manufacturer to buy an MOQ of 300, *per colorway*. So my estimate is close to yours at $435/unit and he bought 7800 of them.
Yeah you may be right on that. I thought it was a bit confusing choosing between slightly different variations in regards to silver, white, or black numerals. Should have started with just one model and added from there.
Comparing Brick to Shinola? Shinola is on every do not buy list. Dave is being Dave. A glorified carny / used car salesman and he's good at it. If I was a millionaire and didn't want to show off, I wouldn't go near this watch.
3 year warranty?? I bet the company expires before the warranty does. At least we know where to find "affordable replacement movements" for this Heirloom quality timepiece. Reach out to me if you need me to replace the battery Ill do it for only $500.00 that's what a standard service costs lol
Portnoy missed completely on target market, pricing, branding, social media, etc. He needs to take a marketing class or two or hire someone that knows that they are doing
Yep I 100% agree. This should have been a layup with the amount of fans he has. Sub $1000, something for the "every man", great build quality for the price.
Huh...."Watch hardos...watch nerds". He means people who are not his target market....as in....people who actually value their hard earned money and know the product they're buying. This also means we know what a straight up rip off his watches are.
If you're going to spend 2 and a half thousand on a watch, you're going to go with a big brand or do your research on lesser known brands. Such a weird price point for these watches.
Wayyy too bland and empty for that price, if you could afford watches at that price point i dont see why you're not buying from actual reputable watchmakers instead
$400 to $500 to make? Is "making" watches that expensive in the US? The watch and company I'd like to use as a comparison is Steinhart and their Ocean One BLACK. German Company, Swiss Made, uses SW 200 Élaboré & ETA 2824-2, 316 L, sapphire crystal and they are 420€. Not to make. To buy... Anyway thanks for the video. Never heard of this Portnoy person before but I find him absolutely terrible to listen to. Nothing about him is entertaining or funny. Just seems like an annoying guy with a terrible personality who got caught red-handed.
In terms of pure manufacturing and assembly, you can more than likely make a watch for less than $400 but I was including the entire start up process (website, marketing, engineering, consulting, etc) in the unit price.
@14:01 He did not spend years.... He went to amfg and told them the name of the co and let them do the rest. He did not design a single aspect of the watch...he chose the dial colors and sizes and they did the rest. They didn't even use a capital B in the name... come on. It sounds like you had alot more design input on your watches... but Dave clearly did not. dave got ripped off sooo hard.

Yeah I'm just not sure who the target market is for this brand/watch. It's in a grey area where you can find a lot of value too.

Basically a pizza review but for his watch!

Love a lot of the things Portnoy does, but this is insane. $30 quartz movements in anything that costs more than $100 is madness.

A Tudor 1926 can be a sub $2k watch. How did he set the Brick price point? This guy is a marketing guru?
RIGHT?! A very bad price point and he obviously didn't do enough market research. I bought a two tone Tudor Royal for sub 2k on the used market!
Best videos on you tube!!!!!!
They’re basically like Watch Gang watches
How do you buy your watch? I like it

I’m also sure he payed less than 40 per movement if he bought them in bulk
you're probably right about that
Brick Watch Company = American Watch Company
I mean someone one has to make the watch. But if you want in-house manufacturering for that price, I'd go with Weiss Watches.

same as $200 dollar watch on aliexpress
I'd take a Q Timex
