I really think you should make a comparison of fsd beta a year ago and now. Pick one of your old videos, drive the same route and compare. What has changed? I would be very interested to see that.
There is not much value in a comparison like that, (beyond basic curiosity) because there really is no such thing as "the same route" because there are so many variables--time of day, light levels, weather, traffic, road conditions like potholes, how well the lines are painted now vs a year ago, etc.. Even repeating the same route 5 minutes later introduces so many different variables that comparing two drives has almost no value from a data perspective. I'm not a scientist but I imagine how they measure or quantify performance between versions and/or over time is with larger data sets that average or smooth out the conditions. Drive the same route 50 times or some larger number IOW.
I used to be jealous of the early self-driving beta testers. I received my beta version on Christmas morning, and I had driven quite a few times now using it. I have to say, that after experiencing it myself, I must give high praise to all the early beta testers! I can now appreciate the level of competence required to put these versions thru their paces. It takes effort, concentration and diligence. Even the version we now have I can see that it requires acute attention so I can’t imagine what you all went thru in the first releases. My hats off to all of you and a resounding THANK YOU!
Couldn’t agree more! I am SO much more engaged when 10.8 is active. It’s NOT perfect but is VERY impressive. I have a real impression of the progress Tesla is making here and Elon himself said he feels Level 4 by the end of 2022 is reasonable Can’t wait.
What sets you positively apart from other beta testers on RUclips is your analysis of how versions compare. I also like that you are driving through the same areas, which allows us to make our own assessments. One thing I'd love to hear even more about is your perception of safety and comfort. Those things are difficult to assess from just watching the video. Keep it up!
16:40 - very nice to see the little kink appear in the tentacle, showing that it would presumably go around the pedestrian, assuming they stopped walking, too. Very reassuring.
The phantom braking at 16:45 is worth a closer look. On replay you can see FSD recognises the vintage streetlights as traffic lights with no clear green or red signal and you watch the speed go from 25 to 19 right at that time. The street lights must have confused the program. Perhaps it might be worth hitting the report button each time there is a phantom braking incident. The screen seems to show the mind of FSD when it’s happening to help us understand why. Otherwise the 10.8 iteration is very encouraging. It’s making me feel like Level 5 autonomy will be achieved possibly sooner than later. Maybe within 5 years isn’t such a stretch after all.
Also if you look, it displays a speedbump... so it seems it thought that crosswalk was a speed bump. At least we can see things in the visual that make us say "Oh, well you shouldn't have slowed there, but now it makes sense why you did"

Merry Christmas to you and your family. I believe that you are one of the premier FSD testors and youTubers out there. Chris I'm 72 and I have been a fan of yours for a couple of years. You have consistently provided a reasonably unbiased assessment of your Tesla experiences, and I sincerely appreciate that. I have a 2020 model 3 that I purchased in Dec. 2019. At least that is what my title says. Anyway I also have FSD Beta and I always watch your trial runs of each new update before I take my turn at experiencing the most recent update. I agree with you that this update is substantially better than any previous version. At least initially. I look forward to your deep dive on the new software interface. I also agree that the FSD Icon is way to small, and for me the indicator that you are in cruise control is way to subtle, as I take my eyes off the road to check my screen for confirmation that I am in adaptive cruise control. Am I wrong or have they removed any trace of an icon to display that the cruise control is on. I did observe changes in the Size of the font and the color of the word MAX. This is way to subtle for me. If you want to do away with the icon for radar cruise control perhaps a simple horizontal color bar that changes colors depending on the mode the car is currently in. This could be a software option that would be instantly recognizable.Just my Thoughts.
I would like the ability to disable cruise control. I will never use it and it is too easy to get out of FSD and accidentally keep cruise control active. I think this is potentially dangerous.
@@JamesBond-qv2ht I to find myself questioning which mode of autonomy the car is in. The new interface makes it even more confusing because it is not obvious as to which mode the car is in. I like cruise control particularly if you haven't paid for FSD. I would like to be able to customize the interface in terms of a changing icon that would change shape and or color as the mode of autonomy changes. It needs to be an obvious change. Of course this is all a mute matter when FSD reaches level 4 and is certified. Until then it will be a matter of trial and error. Getting the interface correct is a big deal.

Great video (as usual!), Chris - thanks for the comments and the critiques - I've been testing FSD Beta v10.8 all day and it's definitely a significant improvement over previous 10.x versions, for sure! It'll be fun to see just how much better it is one year from now, for the next Holiday Update! Keep up the wonderful videos - and Merry Xmas to you and your nice family!
I just got admitted to the FSD program today. Thank you for all the videos that are going to help me use it well. Although a dedicated video would be cool, there 's still lots of good content spread out for us first-timers.
@@DirtyTesla That video was helpful, and offers good perspective. What was a bit of a shock is that it looked like the car was much more confident about turns last March at 10.1 than it is today at 10.8.
When you think about the level of improvement just over a few months, it's really fast. You said it could be a long time or never for perfection, but I think a year or two and it will be better than any human driver.
I've always bitched that the icon and font sizes are not adjustable including that long oval warning box in black. My old eyes cannot make most of those details out with clarity. I want to say to Tesla that they are violating the ADA in the impaired vision area. I cannot put on my "readers" every time I want to see a tiny detail on the display (bifocals don't help with that either, thanks).
I just have the standard AP and the last few versions have had terrible phantom braking on two lane highways. I just installed this update this morning so I’ve had little opportunity to test it, but… on a section of highway where hard braking would happen at least once per minute it didn’t do it once. There were a couple of slow downs, but nothing major. If this continues like that, they really did a remarkable job with this update. Also, even with the standard AP, it does seems that braking behind slower or stopped traffic is much more even, rather than coming up fast and then braking hard.
I have a road that under 10.5 would give me a ton of false slowdowns, at least half a dozen if not more in a known stretch of road and many in exactly the same spots each time. With 10.8 they are virtually gone. There is still one spot that was a 100% that is now maybe 50/50 but the rest of the road in both directions is virtually perfect with no false slowdowns anymore.
I can't believe the car handled the interaction at 17:30 so well. Also cannot believe that turn based rule, where the first person to an intersection has the right, is an actual thing in the US!
That random slowdown at @16:40 looks like some confusion between the brick crosswalk and a speed bump. I think you can see the graphic popup in the display.
So far 10.8 really comes in hot on turns at intersections. If it’s turning right and there is a green light it flies through, makes a turn that’s too wide, and slows down abruptly in the middle of the turn.
I’ve noticed when using full screen mind of car view that it forces me to use voice control more, which i think is a good thing because I don’t feel like I used it enough in the past. Helpful for navigation without the need to minimize the screen.
Merry Christmas! Thanks for your videos. I've noticed that in the last few months, you have gone from pointing out errors the car is making to pointing out things the car is doing that are different then how you would have done them. Testament to how far out is come!
Just a small point, that person around 2:30 was literally on the snow. They were super far from the car, I don’t believe the car should act any different then how it acted. Car should only move if there is a potential of hiring something or someone in it’s path.
Yes. I was noticing that the other day. One intersection omw to work has crossing left turn lined going in both directions. They used to swing wildly and blink in and out of existence. now they're stationary!
These beta testing videos will be so fun to have online a couple of years after everyone just takes FSD Level 5 for granted and when it’s not any different from an elevator with buttons instead of an operator.
@@danispringer Used a lever to run it. Made sure the elevator actually stopped aligned to the floor you wanted to get off at. And not surprisingly people was scared of automatic elevators and upset that machines took away jobs.
The dark blue means it’s moving with high confidence while the light blue means it’s moving with less confidence, if it’s moving at all. Well done to the people of Tesla and Dirty Tesla to report errors in your beta test drive. Thanks for your effort. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. A SF, Calif residence

2021 was a great year for FSD Beta and it’s come a long way since this time last year. Imagine how much better it will be this time next year.. And thanks to you I’ll be able to watch it as it continues to gets better. FSD Beta 2022 is about to begin ! Merry 🎅🏻 Christmas ! Happy 🍾New 🥂Year !
I'm still being bold and saying about 2 years (so end of 2023) for a fairly solid hands free experience. Probably not level 5 due to regulation hell but effectively so much if not in words. I feel like many things, and 2021 has shown this to be true, that the acceleration of the technology is exponential.
Chris, could you suggest to Tesla that they use a right scroll button push followed by a verbal “Report” to report FSD Beta issues? It would be much easier and less distracting to the driver. Thanks
I think a big improvement to your videos would be to include previous versions turns just to actually compare since you are always doing a “set course”
You do the best videos, so thanks. 10.8 was great for me EXCEPT slowdowns at least once a minute. Undrivable in that mode in that it made me and my wife sick. 2 lane road, sunny day. Lots of trees and tree branches. Seemed to me that the car was doing its slow-downs based on the shadows cast onto the road from the trees and power poles. A big problem. Anyone else?? Was doing between 35 and 50, and slow-downs were about 4 mph.
I’m with you! It’s nice to see the map most of the time. I preferred the ¾ FSD view with ¼ of the map showing in 10.6.1. I wish Tesla would add that ratio as an additional option. Even better would be a screen that is infinitely adjustable, so you could vary the size of the map at will! Great Video!
17:44 interesting. Looks like you can see how the car is navigating in shadow mode after he takes over. Has this always been the case or is it only easier to notice with the new tentacle.
When you were trying to explain how the car hesitates on right turns, it turns like a teenager with their parents in the car. I know that I used to hesitate a lottt with my parents because I was afraid to do something and get yelled at for it. (Though just like FSD beta, the hesitating is actually what they got onto me for)
My first FSD beta drive on 10.8 was much better as well, the only thing that I had an issue with was around-a-about been having issues for a while on 3/4 turn, but I need to test it a few more times and it came into my neighborhood it was coming in a little too fast, other than that much better in a lot of areas. Great update with 10.8 and the light show is awesome and since I have the hanshow taillight and bumper light upgrades it was awesome. As my taillights were doing the pulse in a circle and bumper lights were pulsing back and forth (like night rider).
I've seen a Google AI blog post recently about this kind of neural networks' glitch when they calculate a perfect action and then "second guess" themselves halfway through when their own actions change the conditions they observe... It leads to some sort of oscillations in the actions of the controlled robot very similar to what Tesla is sometimes doing... Human observer would pretty much call that behavior "hesitancy" or "indecisiveness"... Good news is, the researchers already have a good solution to this problem...
Thanks again for your videos. I prefer that you show the map so I can see where/when your car wants to turn. My experience with 10.8 has been excellent. I really like how it now slows down going around a blind left hand curve in my neighborhood. It used to go the speed limit (25 mph) and it was way to fast. Now if it would stick to the far right hand side of the road. (It used to go right smack down the center of the road, so it has improved a little since it now trends a little to the right of the center)
The full screen is great but it hides the cancel destination button too. Also, the record snapshot button moves depending on if it is in full screen or not. I do like it but there are a few minor fixes that would make it way better.
I got 10.8 an hour ago. Sadly, I haven't had a moment to take it for a drive but priorities are priorities so I did find time for the light show. No spoilers but it's good fun and Tesla was very creative when designing the show.
around 2:40 it did actually move over for the woman. 4:40 car couldnt see because of the vehicle turning and didnt want to pull out into potential traffic that it might have seen quickly approaching. 17:40 it went to the right lane because the van was entering your lane as oncoming traffic. nice that it saw that and was like 'abort route, keep driver safe'. Would be interesting if such an incident happened, would the car then try to make the turn from the other lane or would it reroute entirely?
Awesome stuff as always; keep up the great work. I am excited to try this out; just got the download a few minutes ago. Hopefully we will start to see more updates like this where we really see improvements. I agree with you that the last few have not had noticeable improvements really. My biggest complaint lately has been the phantom braking. Here is hopping that is fixed in this one.
it's also faster in reaction. If is was his turn it used to wait until the previous car completely cleared the intersection, now it start going a bit earlier and natural it seems. Do you agree? Merry Xmas btw!
The right rear view view should be on the bottom right of the display and the left rear view should be on the left side. The verticle line that delineates between the info side and the map side should be totally adjustable by the driver with a slider. Hey, did I miss an episode where you replace your round steering wheel with a yoke? I'm going to look back through your older videos.
I kinda like that it shows the side camera view(s) when activating the turn signal. OOPZ 11:40 You said when entering roundabout that it should be using the left turn signal. It's always right turn signal to enter and exit roundabouts. Also, all vehicles already in roundabouts have the right of way. That's the reason yield signs are used at roundabouts. Videos explaining how to use roundabouts mention this.
Imagine how good this would be with better cameras or a setup like an iPhone with telephoto and wide shot. Also, placement with cameras in headlight looking sideways so the car doesn’t have to pull out as far. IMO You can tell the decision making is getting really good but detection is still clearly a problem.
I’ve been watching FSD progress from some of the earliest versions, and it’s amazing to see how the car improves over time. Merry Christmas Chris, and FSD beta!
Do you think the snow on the ground is actually helping with vision maybe btw? Not sure how the vision stuff works but maybe the contrast of helping it?
As far as I’ve ever known, you are actually wrong about that roundabout turn signal. You aren’t “turning left” you are considered as taking your 3rd exit so you wouldn’t use a left turn signal you would signal to the right when you are entering and exiting the roundabout. Great video!
@@jcd-k2s just looked up the law in my state and apparently we aren’t even required to signal at all so I wasn’t even correct. The only recommendation it said was to signal right before exiting the roundabout. Good to know that some countries require more signaling though!
I *really* like that it pops open the camera when you turn on the turn signal, but I wish it was centered below the car so it doesn't obstruct the rendered view of the left hand blind spot. I see the angle adjusts a little to make up for it, but it looks like it's still partially blocking the blind spot on the left. Not a huge deal, but I don't think it was optimally placed.
Man, those "creep into/stop in the middle of a 2-way stop intersection" are just terrible. I'm really looking forward to the day they increase the aggressiveness factor enough so that these turns/stops aren't so agonizing. If it did the same turns its current doing just faster, things would be in a much better state. With great beta testers like you, though, hopefully we'll get there soon enough! 🤞
I really think you should make a comparison of fsd beta a year ago and now. Pick one of your old videos, drive the same route and compare. What has changed? I would be very interested to see that.

@@BitJam they could but not a single car in the world does that
@@aigtrader2984 Yet.
Finally apart of the beta team myself. Can’t wIt to try this and make some videos. So inspired by you!
Have fun!
I appreciate your level headed, dependable and fair assesments. Thanks and keep up the good work.
That random slowdown at @16:40 looks like some confusion between the brick crosswalk and a speed bump. I think you can see the graphic popup in the display.
I'm glad flashing yellow is working again.
Glad the outro has returned! Great video, and good to see all the improvements.
Looking very promising for 2022 🤓
Dojo to come!
We can definitely see the improvement damn !
Glad to hear that. Seeing it on video is not the same as riding in the car. Wish I could take you all for rides!
@@DirtyTesla But you already do! :-)
You should do a video showing side-by-side routs from a year ago and today. FSD beta is only a year old and it's come this far!
Just a small point, that person around 2:30 was literally on the snow. They were super far from the car, I don’t believe the car should act any different then how it acted. Car should only move if there is a potential of hiring something or someone in it’s path.
Man the line detection seems to be massively improved. They are pretty much stationary now
Yes. I was noticing that the other day. One intersection omw to work has crossing left turn lined going in both directions. They used to swing wildly and blink in and out of existence. now they're stationary!
@@DirtyTesla same with cars at the beyond the edge of the road. They don't swirl around anymore (mostly)
It’s probably re-evaluating as well or confirming it’s decisions. Also keep it on Assertive, seems to be better Performance overall for what you’re looking for. You seem to be paying enough attention to use it as well as having stronger nerves helps
As always - first place I stop when a new release is dropped. (Un)fortunately am on vacation in England so will have to wait til Thursday to try 10.8 out (already downloaded though). Thanks Chris for all you do. These videos are great (as were the WaPo comments). Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Merry Christmas Chris & Family, hopefully you all have a great time and this is a great release for some relaxing driving.
Merry Christmas Chris! Thanks for another year of great videos!
Those 5-8 mph left and right turns REALLY need to be prioritized. The inconsistency and lack of commitment to turn has been an issue for a while now…
I am happy with the progress. It looks like the engineers are doing their job to make the FSD so much better. Previous ride along made me nervous that you might crash. I didn’t have the same feeling. Well done to the people of Tesla and Dirty Tesla to report errors in your beta test drive. Thanks for your effort. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. A SF, Calif residence
on intervention at 17:42, FSB may try to avoid the incoming car driving onto your lane, thats interesting. great vid, thx for the changelog and review :D cheers
Randomly came across this video. Very cool! I immediately noticed buildings that were quite familiar....seems we live in the same town! Stay safe out there!
Thank you for this Video...if's looking very good!
And...before it's too
Late...Merry Christmas and do have a Happy New Year too.
Thank you - Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Xmas and thanks for all the videos in 2021
For the android users, Dont forget to update your app. I have received 2 updates in last 2 days (Friday 12-24 and Sat 12-25). Hi Chris!
Love the yoke.
Chris, could you suggest to Tesla that they use a right scroll button push followed by a verbal “Report” to report FSD Beta issues? It would be much easier and less distracting to the driver. Thanks
We asked for a long time when the beta group was small and had direct communication with Tesla and they never did it :/
Thanks for all you do. Happy Christmas from the UK.
So exciting. Thanks for keeping us updated even in Christmas time! This is really very much appreciated. Love and happy new year.
Wow, some great improvements, definitely the best update in a while. Thanks Chris and Merry Christmas
Amazing. Never seen this before. Not sure who would want automatic driving in town??? But it was far better than I thought.
Just the prequel of what's to come! Think anyone who isn't able to drive themselves. Independence!
Subwoofer control is my favourite 😅
Great video! I hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!
17:44 interesting. Looks like you can see how the car is navigating in shadow mode after he takes over. Has this always been the case or is it only easier to notice with the new tentacle.
Always been the case
The glitch in the matrix at 15:55 had the same car going in one direction then the opposite and then the other way again in 3 seconds 😂
Merry Xmas and happy holidays.
Oh you pointed that out too. Ha!
Great video, thanks ☺️!
Appears much better! They still need to fix the slowness once into intersections... but much better
I got 10.8 an hour ago. Sadly, I haven't had a moment to take it for a drive but priorities are priorities so I did find time for the light show. No spoilers but it's good fun and Tesla was very creative when designing the show.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
It's crazy you can full screen the FSD part now
Feels like the future
around 2:40 it did actually move over for the woman.
Seems to be!
Great drive! Really exciting to see this progress.
it's also faster in reaction. If is was his turn it used to wait until the previous car completely cleared the intersection, now it start going a bit earlier and natural it seems. Do you agree? Merry Xmas btw!
Thanks! Great job!
Awesome video! Thank you. Merry Christmas!
I'd love a customizable slider for the FSD view. Here's the yoke video :) ruclips.net/video/CCSBi0LcrXc/видео.html
I'm not impressed about the drive, but I am impressed about the speed of progression.
I share your enthusiasm about 10.8. Merry Christmas! Jess
Nice! Merry Christmas! 🎄
Very Nice Bro! Get Good A.I.
Imagine how good this would be with better cameras or a setup like an iPhone with telephoto and wide shot. Also, placement with cameras in headlight looking sideways so the car doesn’t have to pull out as far.
IMO You can tell the decision making is getting really good but detection is still clearly a problem.
Headlight cameras would solve many issues imo
I think the best solution for the visual changes, add the map to the bottom right of the screen.
Still level 2...... It will never get better. 🎄⛄ Merry Christmas
I noticed that between an old drive and now blinking reds also worked.
Great work, love these constant improvements.
What do you think of your yoke?
