I was rocking with the song, and had the BIGGEST grin when he did the dance. I can see my mom shimmying and snapping and singing. Sometimes it would start with her humming a random tune, and then it'd work its way into full on "Yubby dibby dibby dibby dum!" complete with the dance. I'm here because I was reading, and started humming a random tune that turned into this song. I love how these sweet memories unlock and bring us joy later on in life.
'Bout twenty-five years ago in my fraternal order we had a member who quite resembled the great Chaim Topol replete with beard and large muscular build. He wasn't fat. He would sing this song A capella to resounding applause. It was like being present at a live stage performance. He has since passed away but I'm thankful for being blessed with for his rendition and can only wonder what it must have been to be in the audience for Topol's presentation.
I love that as the song progresses, we learn what his priorities are In the first verse its things that’s his immediate concerns. More money because he wouldn’t have to do hard labor as he’s doing right now, and farm animals because he’s starving The second verse is things he really want but don’t have. A wife he can pamper and provide for, and the respect and adoration of his community And lastly the thing he wants more than all. Being able to spend more time on his religion
And in the same pattern, his views are challenge by his daughters. His eldest wanting to marry a poor trailer who has nothing, his 2nd wanting to marry a man who will force her to move away from the family, and the 3rd wanting to marry a Christian.
You are truly, deeply perceptive. I wish you were a member either of the clergy or a psychiatrist for you would clear the fog and present the facts and your incisive analysis instantly. You would benefit so many people.
I love the fact that he still able to hold those notes with all that shaking going on! Seriously, try holding a note while waving your arms, it's nigh impossible!
I was lucky enough to see Topol's Farewell tour for Fiddler back in 2010 before he retired, and it was such a treat! He was 75 when I saw him on stage and he sang and danced just as well as he did in the movie, if not better! The only noticeable difference between the movie and seeing him live, was that he had more gray hairs! It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and one I will always treasure!
In the movie he reportedly had to engage facial muscles all the time to look like a wrinkled old man while being like 30 yrs old, so no wonder why he was happy as the time went by.
i think everyone knows about it to some extent. It's just that most people only either know the name or know its some sort of musical and havent actually seen it
That's partially because the message of it never changes! Our ways of life are always in danger, thus we all kinda feel like we could fall off the roof!
Fun fact: Chaim Topol was suffering from a bad toothache while filming this number. Props to him for being a true professional and doing the scene anyway! ^_^

Personally I haven’t seen this film or production, but I like how this song tells me everything I need to know about Reb Tevye’s character, his ambitions, and motivations. It’s so enjoyable for that fact. Like reading a short story.
@Peter&MJ pretty sure it isn't... reb is a really common abriviation for rabbi in the english speaking world. It's a lot closer in pronaunciatiom to the original hebraw "רבי" (pronounced "Ra-Bi"). Never heared it used for "sir" or "mr"
To be honest, this song doesn't tell about his motivations all. This song is just saying "it would be nice to be rich". The opening prologue ('Tradition') tells more about his motivations which are his family, his religion, and of course... tradition.

My fav part that really cements him as a 'real person' and not just theatre fodder is that tiny moment at the end of the song when he gestures up to heaven with a small little shrug. So God, what of it? Genius.
Paradoxically the point is, is that he is indeed a very rich man! rich in appreciation, humility, good will, vitality, joy, and hopeful gratitude. That is wealth!
And it won't make one bit of difference if I answer right or wrong, When you're rich they think you really know! Words of true wisdom indeed, Reb Tevye.
This is easily my favorite piece of musical theater of all time. Not only is the music remarkably compelling and engaging but the viewer is able to understand so much about the character from this one number alone. The people who wrote the musical were not orthodox Jews and therefore there is a slant against the Torah's view of things. Many people, Jewish or not, would like to have a son also. The Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Joseph Isaac Schneerson had three daughters and three outstanding sons-in-law.
I love that some of the important points of what he wants out of being wealthy are simple, wholesome things like making his wife happy and having the extra time to talk scripture at the synagogue. Really shows his character.

Whenever I feel down, I listen to this song. Dear God what a blessings. I am 70 years old now, my son is getting married to a Jewish young woman and I hope I will live long enough to be able to sing and dance this song for them.
2:22 my dad used to sing this song, doing this dance, across the kitchen floor when we were kids and we couldn’t afford milk. Makes me laugh to think of it to this day - miss you dad, thanks for making a fantastic childhood out of a shitty situation.
(Love you too mum, even though you would never condone me saying “shitty”)
thst was wholesome :)
What an exceptional memory. -- That, in itself, makes you a wealthy one!
Bless him and all our dads who made our lives special
I love that as the song progresses, we learn what his priorities are
In the first verse its things that’s his immediate concerns. More money because he wouldn’t have to do hard labor as he’s doing right now, and farm animals because he’s starving
The second verse is things he really want but don’t have. A wife he can pamper and provide for, and the respect and adoration of his community
And lastly the thing he wants more than all. Being able to spend more time on his religion
It's like he's just reciting Maslow's hierarchy of needs from the bottom up lol. From physiological needs all the way up to self-actualization
@1tiercel I mean money and family yeah
And in the same pattern, his views are challenge by his daughters. His eldest wanting to marry a poor trailer who has nothing, his 2nd wanting to marry a man who will force her to move away from the family, and the 3rd wanting to marry a Christian.

That sounds incredible! What a privilege to see him perform this role in person! 😀😁
Topol is such a talented dude!
In the movie he reportedly had to engage facial muscles all the time to look like a wrinkled old man while being like 30 yrs old, so no wonder why he was happy as the time went by.
I saw that as well. I remember everyone in the audience cheered whenever he did the dance he do with his arms.
I was there and got to see it too! I was in fifth grade and my mom took me to see it when we lived in LA!

speed it up, it's even better XD me and my cousin dying of laughter here
This is easily my favorite piece of musical theater of all time. Not only is the music remarkably compelling and engaging but the viewer is able to understand so much about the character from this one number alone.
I must say this has got to be one of the best representations of the working class life; as someone who has dreaded the first of the month more times than I care to admit I can relate to his distain for his socioeconomic position despite his hard work and pious values. I think all of us would love nothing more to adorn our partners in glamorous jewelry and have a beautiful home full of lovely architectural features when compared to a lack of certainty when it comes to a warm bed and a full meal
Tevye wouldn't be poor if he just went into the singing business instead of farming, lol
He did move to New York, if I remember right. Maybe he got discovered lol
It’s like that for every poor person on musicals
TRADITION DAMMIT!
Cellophane Man that is correct maybe he got to be on Broadway
Fun fact you made this comment during the good old days before you knew a pandemic was coming. Same whoever else replied to it.
Just feel so privileged to have grown up with this as part of the soundtrack to my childhood. Such meaningful ideas & cracking tunes. & Topol!!! What’s not to love.…
“If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray.
And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall.
And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men, several hours every day.
That would be the sweetest thing of all.” Best part of this song he values his relationship with God more than anything
Edward Casteen: God is dead, didn't you hear?
And I absolutely love that message. Sitting across from my husband this Saturday morning 9/7/19 I asked him, can you even imagine a movie’s theme song nowadays that contain the lyrics you just noted. Hollywood would totally explode.
“And that would be the sweetest thing of all.”

How happy one can be if one doesn't have to worry so much about so little. One day maybe enough people will think that way. Could be a better world.
If anyone was wondering who or what inspired the rapping style of Iggy Azalea...
1971, Reb Tevye: "Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum"
2015, Iggy Azalea: "When I wimmana when I winno when I winni leg up a chinga ho so co ga ho so co to come through take a protoco just gemmi dji thats ma protoco"

+SeDona It's from the original 1971 film.
+SeDona Fun fact : video was uploaded 2006, so how can it be from 2011, time travel..??
+Steven Mistiaen I think SeDona is talking about the Iggy Azalea bit?
It happens again. I just clicked to this song and now I have to listen to all others from this unique musical.
I simply adore it.
I'm a Japanese. I watched this film in childhood with my sister and my father.
I remember that he just said this dance is peculiar.
Now I'm 40, and I think his comment was peculiar.
His dance is great! I also watched this film as a child. I read that the musical ran for a long time in Japan. Did you watch the Japanese language version of the film?
Tevye he is from the old country they dance like this still folk songs and music!
It was Jewish Dancing
No offense but u need to understand English to even begin to make a comment like this ..once again, no disrespect.

This is a remarkable video! Topol was a genius in how he depicted his part! This is one of my fondest memories of this movie in 1971!
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
As the father of 5 daughters Tevye and Topol have always had a special place in my heart. RIP good sir and thank you for the joy you brought me over the years.

Some years ago I was lucky enough to see this masterpiece of a play on stage. And even more, it was the first time I'd ever seen a professional production of anything on a stage. For me, it was something I'll never forget. RIP to a gifted performer.
