  • Opening with scenes of dignitaries arriving at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, where NATO had its political headquarters from 1952 to 1959, this clip provides an explanation of the role of the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s highest political decision-making body. Following on from the narrator, NATO Secretary General Lord Ismay gives an explanation from within the impressive hall of the building, with the Eiffel Tower in the background. Lord Ismay was appointed as NATO’s first Secretary General when the post was created in 1952; he was a British politician who was encouraged to take up this post by Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister at the time.
The clip is an extract taken from the NATO film “Alliance for Peace” (1953).
