As much as I hate the extreme sides of the Steve argument, this tourney was Steve banned and was one of the hypest tournaments recently, kinda says something
@@trombonegamer14 The top few matches are exactly the problem. If the top 8 of a tournament is unwatchable no one will want to watch it. The last thing you want for a live event is for the ending to be the worst/most boring part. Especially because that kills any desire for people who missed it to catch the vods.
@@usern4metak3nsskill doesn't factor into it at this point. The character shouldn't be banned for any other reason than it making for a worse viewing experience. The character is the most boring top character to watch in smash history. Aggressively anti-fun.
I would rather marss have his own tournament he hosts but I dunno what all that would entail. probably permits, which means cash... then comes the rules and conditions bureaucracy nonsense...
personally i loved Umebura too, i was happy to see Kameme and Gluto doing well, grand finals was super tense and there were other cool matches, especially before top 8 like Void Asimo
I don't get the reluctance. Every other sport on this planet tries to be fun to watch and tends to get rid of boring shit. Smash scene took forever to tentatively try out steve bans.
Because banning Steve is stupid for viewer reasons. Steve or any character needs to be banned if they are dominating the meta to an insane degree(MK in brawl). You don't ban him because people find his sets boring. You rework the rules that encourage a boring playstyle
@@rizvan1632 when a sport is this heavily dependent on viewership, what the viewers find boring is gonna be at the centre of ban discourse. thats what op was trying to say im pretty sure
@firewall5189 Its not heavily dependent on that though. It's a competition first and foremost and should be treated as such. Viewers finding something boring is hit or miss. The numbers don't justify a ban anyway
@rizvan1632 Smash and many esports reached a point where they were falling out and large tournaments simply struggled to turn a profit anymore. Viewership does definitely matter at the end of the day because as of now running a big Smash event is a risk financially. If the price of bringing in more viewers and bringing attention back to the scene is banning a character, tournament organizers will do it.
@brehella770 Smash tournaments always did struggle with it. If viewers affected the profitability of smash tournaments as much as you think, they wouldn't allow 50k viewers to be watching restreams of their tournaments on other channels as they do. Only a couple majors don't allow it/charge for it. Acola set was in the top 5 peak viewers for Watch the Throne. Umebura had more viewers than LMBM anyway and the latter had Steve banned, so based on viewership alone, you 100% shouldn't ban Steve. Do you have some data that supports tournaments that ban Steve make more money than those that don't? I'm all for banning Steve once and if his meta develops to the point that he starts objectively taking over the game(half of top 8 being Steve for example) cycling
I really didn’t think I would get a glimpse of classic Smash Ultimate again until I saw Leo almost pull off the EVO 2017 Reverse 3-0 against Tweek again

Umebura was also hype outside of the top few matches

I think I'm starting to agree with mkleo, character banning doesn't add to skill. even if tournaments would be fairer. doesn't effect skill
I mean even if Steve wasn't banned, acola would've likely still been in Umebura anyways, so I doubt in this instance it really changes anything.

Steve Ban tournament, hype top sets...hmm there must be a correlation here but I guess for the community they just can't figure it out.
It's quite obvious, but people just want to ignore it. You can compare last years steve legal lmbm top 8 to see the drastic difference.
