She started singing in 1940 when she was nine on the BBC in London right after the war started. So shes' been singing for 80 years,,,, take care,,,,,,,, Love you Pet!
As we Say here in italy, class Is not water! Petula Clark: a shining example how to sing and entertaining only by talent! No artifices Need when class and talent are at play.❤️👋🇮🇹
Bless her heart. 🙏 She's still a beautiful and gracious lady. I just loved her when I was a kid. She's also a great actress. I hope I still have it going on when I'm 80 years old. Love you, Petula Clark ❤❤❤
I grew up in the 1960s. Petula Clark was a big part of the music scene, and this song got as many people hyped up on weekends as any song did at the time.
I think that Jools 'got it in one' when he prepared for Petula Clark to appear on his Hootenanny show. Quite simpley this is the best ever *'live'* version of 'Downtown' out there. And his band is on top form here as they backed up such an iconic figure as Petula Clark. His band really show that they want to 'give it their all' for her. *And what a performance from Petua!* She is amazing. Well done to everyone!
The first time I heard this song I was 4 years old, and it has been with me ever since. My mother told me I was toddling around the house singing it after hearing it on the radio. I think patula sounded just as good maybe better in 2013 than she did in 1964. Wow.
80 years old in 2013 and still sounds stunning! I remember this song when I was like 8 yrs old, now I'm 67... Still beautiful, still sings so great... Just WOW!
BRAVO !! - Miss Petula Clark. Thanks for the memories. you may not have been the prophet Elisha, but you were in tune with the time and remembered to this day. You helped make my youth a brighter memory. I can only wish i could make your days now as bright. Thank you and know that you made a difference; you made an impact; YOU made memories for many people a pleasant thing Ms. Petula Clark.
The song was written - both lyrics and music - by Tony Hatch who also produced the track with many of Petula's other tracks. He also co-composed many others of Petula's other track along with his wife of the time, Jackie Trent and Petula herself.
A wonderfully talented and beautiful woman who ,with Tony Hatch at the helm,CLASSED UP the whole British Invasion! And Bravo to Jools for keeping so many torches burning brightly!
That's amazing. My mother always tells a story about my Dad, who passed away a few years ago. Back in the sixties, his party piece was to get on the microphone in a pub and do a rendition of this song. He was so bad...one night they gave him the prize - a bottle of Champagne - just to get off the stage. Growing up, my dad always used to play this song. And to this day, I continue the tradition ... my karaoke is awful, I cannot sing a note. But I love it.
Am so grateful that an icon as Petulant Clark is still singing her number one hit from 1965. Are people critical of her singing?? Well wait till you turn her age, be happy to even be alive. DOWNTOWN will always be MISS PETULANT CLARK. And this song;immortal.
Brought me right back to putting the 45 on the player, the first bounce of the stylus then this beautiful song came out. Loved the song, I can still smell the vinyl.
What a career, you name it , shes done it , you name shes won it. She is up there with the greats Bassey and Andrews but sadly has never recieved the same recognition they have..Quite simply a "legend "
Wow. I met and spoke to her 49 years ago in Philadelphia, waiting at the pedestrian crossing 5th and Market Sts. I can still hear my late brother Mike on piano still a teen. Whew!
Fabuloso acompañamiento musical para esta gran estrella que brilla en lo más alto del firmamento en la interpretación no le queda grande es propiamente lo que merece Petula para siempre ella será y es la más grande cancionista.
Wow, This clip is so cool on many different levels. Its great to see the whole room joining in on her performance, including all of the other musicians that were on the show with Pet that night. Personally, shes always been one of my fave performers. Bravo bravo...
Wow! I can remember, as a very young lad, being on the farm. Far too young to know why my parents were on ladders?? They were trying to make ends meet with 5 kids. I was driving around, on the farmers lap, listening to "down town"! I would have been 6 ish years old - still remember.
Wonderful. Petula was a singer in WW2, and here she is in 2013, with much younger people knowing her song, and loving it. Fantastic.
😅
In ww 2 she was a young girl, read the history.
@@walterbrenner7359 From Wikipedia: "Clark's professional career began during the Second World War as a child entertainer on BBC Radio."
You’re thinking of Loretta Lynne.

Petula is one of those very very rare stars who has managed to age without aging! A true music icon.

Awesome! Pet Clark was my first “tv crush” as a young boy in the ‘60’s. Now, nearly 60 years later: my opinion hasn’t changed a bit. She’s luminous.
