Wow, didn’t see this! What an honor (again!). To answer those fantastic questions at 2.36 1) Was recorded around 2016 I guess, so almost 25 years old. 16 mentally. 2) Taco (the Norwegian way) 3) Dark Blue
Baard is my favorite of the younger generation of drummers, which has a ton of talent, but his feel, sound, groove, technique and busyness that still plays to the strength of the music being played just speaks to me in a major way. I still remember hearing that he had joined Leprous and being incredibly happy that one of my favorite young bands were joining forces with the prodigy from Borknagar. Just a force of nature.
My favorite thing about Baard is that he's playing all this complex stuff but he's into it as if it was a simple 4/4 punk rock groove. It's not that he makes it look simple, he's just vibing massively with his drumkit.
Baard is one of those drummers you know is advancing the instrument right before your eyes. He is just as important as Gavin Harrison as a modern drummer who exists in the modern rock/metal realm and moving the drums forward. Baards compositional approach is nearly incomparable. Just see Boneville, distant bells and even castaway angels. He gets full range out if the kit in almost every instance he touches it. Great to be alive to see this man changing the game
He is kind of improvising, since it took the chance to be more showy than the record version. Part of it, my guess at least, is that since is a playthrough he is putting the drums front and center, while in the record is more about the song and voice.
I've been patiently awaiting this gem for a while, glad you finally got around to it! Hope everything has calmed down a bit and returned to normal for you after that hectic period =)
Well that was truly epic. You are absolutely right to point out his compositional mastery on this track. Thanks for introducing this drummer and band to me -- I loved them both.
The control he has on this fill at 5:15 is incredible! Can't believe that he was only 24, maybe even 23, when he wrote and recorded this drum part. I really wish Baard will get the recognition he deserves among musicians (and not only dummers/drum aficionados) of all genres, the guy is truly a genius! Great reaction Andrew! happy to see Baard Kolstad again on the channel! There were a couple of technical issues during the video: when you hit the pause button there is some lagging on the video (like we can still the video playing but it is muted for a couple of seconds before it pauses), also at some point you talked and we could barely hear you over the song. Nothing bad though, just wanted to tell you in case you have not noticed or see/hear the end result differently as we do :) Cheers,
Yes! I had some issues on this one. Very weird I tried to make a note for the start of the video. And then that wouldn't sync either. Hopefully no gremlins in the system!
Baaaaaaaaard🥳🥳🥳 This is song is a gem, and really REALLY hard for a drummer to play with all the timesignatures. Baard is like; hold my beer, and then brings the song to another level. He is that good. Thank you for this, Andrew🙏🏻 All the best from 🇳🇴 (Btw; Lepeous has today announced their new album that will drop i august🥳)
Looking forward to you doing Baard again! He is one of my all time faves. I'm glad you mentioned his composition. He is definitely on a whole other level to most other drummers compositionally. Neil Peart level. You need to watch him play Slaves live. You'll love it
Great reaction as always! I laughed, I cried, I... Well, I didn't cry. Always a pleasure watching your vids. Speaking of drum racks, I currently use a Gibraltar Stealth rack. Great for not having to mount toms to a cymbal stand. Also replaces your snare stand with a mount for it as well
You need to step up to the next level and see Leprous live. I seen them open for Between the Buried and Me. I had never heard of Leprous before that show. They were instantly one of my top 10 bands. Probably even top 5. When a band you have never heard of blows you away more than BTBAM!!!!! How is that possible?!
@@divided123 yes sir. I went with a friend who hadn't heard Leprous before either. We are both eager for another chance to see them. They stole the show indeed.
I really like this song. Amazing lyrics aside, this sort of frantic drumming mixes unexpectedly well with more somber, ambient sort of sound on the background And yeah, Lerpous are very dramatic/theatrical, that's quality stuff. The way Baard plays, and I know jack sh*t about instruments, as if drums are part of his body - that's probably years of constant practice, experience. I've heard he's improvising on the fly a lot, which to me just affirms that notion. The way he plays is organic, for the lack of a better word.
I got a request. I think you will like it . Its Matt Mcguire chainsmokers don't let me down. My apologies if you've already seen it . Just thought you would dig it . Be cool to see your take on it.
Been playing violin for years and always told the same thing. Keep your pinkie on the bow. Then I see that Itzhak Perlman plays with his right pinkie almost always curdled in. Granted I do not sound like that, and you should probably start with what they tell you as a base line when learning and then see what works best. And if you don't know who Perlman is, much sadness.
This is easily my favorite playthrough from Baard. The only downside is that i can no longer listen to the album version of this song because the drum on this version are simply superior 😂
Can the term "spastic " be used as a complement? This appears to me as spastic yet competent. Such tension in the music, I needed a beer to get through this high tension display😳🍺
Bard could be 54 and still look 12. Yeah; the camera thing is a bit ultra-douche IMHO; just bloody annoying. I think the cymbal term you are looking for is “Dry as a nuns...”.
