I am a vietnamese native. I am really appreciate your hard works. You content is not only useful for foreigns but also native people. I feel proud of you, you bring vietnamese language to the world and let the world knows more things about vietnamese people. I hope you well and create more useful contents. Thanks again.
Thank you Annie for your wonderful explanation of this. I found this video after discovering that my 1966 South Vietnamese textbook and dictionary from Saigon state that nhỡ is the spelling for " to miss" (a bus etc.), while my 1990s to 2000s textbooks and dictionaries (published in HCMC and Hanoi) state the standard spelling is lỡ. Mind blown
Fascinating. Thank you for your explanation from a historical perspective. I found it rewarding.
1) So the changes in the North happened earlier than the changes in the South. (08:00)
2) However the variation adopted by the South appear to be more dominant than the North (12:30)
So interesting! Thank you for your videos! They've been an incredible resource for me, and my family has even noticed that my Vietnamese has gotten better :)
Beautiful Annie, you've discovered the main secret of vietnamese language.
Annie, that was even more fantaatic than your already great videos. Is there documentary evidence to help explain or at least track how so many southern final Consonants changed? . Of course I mean mainly t>c and c>t. Thanks as always. You are a RUclips treasure.
I noticed that you also change the thanh ngã tone. In northern accent, there was a definite stop but in southern accent, it was a smooth, continuous pronunciation.
Thanks again, Annie. Happy to see frequent videos :)
PS - History helps with memory.
Great video, Annie! Do more videos like this on the history of differences between/among dialects.
Très intéressant et l'explication est très claire. Merci.
very rare to find a native Vietnamese teacher with this depth of understanding. Impressed!
Not sure I agree with the statement that 'People who move away tend to preserve the language better' - that might be true for some things, but there are certainly a lot of ways in which the Northern accent is more conservative too -e.g preserving the ngã/hỏi distinction, or pronouncing the q in qu words.
@@JH-ty2cs you might not agree with it but it's true and it's not limited to vietnam.
Excellent comparison. Thanks.
very informative, as usual
All the differences between North and South could make it easy to hiểu lầm each other...
Thanks Annie. You have a very cute northern accent.
Your videos are so unique
Great video. Thank you
Em Annie! Anh có bạn bè từ Hải Dương! Giọng nói là “n” nhiều! Anh có nhớ một lần hồi xưa khi bạn nói “ núi” anh hiểu lầm. Anh trả lời mấy lần “ lúi, lúi”! Tức cười nhận ra và hiểu rồi
Annie rất thông minh
Rất thú vị
Hi Annie, I'm interested in which other sources you managed to find for Middle Vietnamese? After long hours searching online, I've only found the 'Việt-Bồ-La' and 'Phép giảng tám ngày', both by Rhodes...are there other texts out there?

What are some words or phrases that Viet Kieu use that are no longer used in Vietnam?
"Cầu tiêu" is one example. While they still say "cầu tiêu", we say "nhà vệ sinh" more. Or, they still say "hãng" but we might say "công ty" more now.
@@LearnVietnameseWithAnnie Yes, I've heard those words here in the U.S. It's good to know that those are not used much anymore in VN. When I learned Vietnamese in college, our textbook was so old that it would have sentences like, "Có bao nhiêu piastre là một bát phở trên đường Catinat?"
@@jwyatt3892 Trời ơi chắc chắc là quyển sách này xưa lắm! Con mới google "piastre" là gì! :)
Hospital nha thuong, famous actor: minh tinh. In general, ppl who left VN in 1975 tend to use Viet-Han words.
Tại sao phụ âm tiếng Việt thay đổi nhanh như thế trong khi đa số nguyên âm được để nguyên?
Thật ra theo mình được học thì nguyên âm tiếng Việt cũng đã thay đổi rất nhiều, không phải là giữ nguyên đâu ạ.
@@LearnVietnameseWithAnnie à zay hả
mà vì sao phụ âm như bl, ml, tl được biến đổi tlong thời gian cực kỳ ngắn như vậy nhỉ
Authentic southern Vietnamese accent
How can foreigners be encouraged to study a language that is always changing and is different across the regions?. I don't think other languages change pronunciation or grammatical rules throughout the time, at least not in few decades.
u can treat north and south as an dialect. not accents sound. just like there are different dialect in germany, france. but the gov that time, pick up one of these dialect as offical language for the country. to learn viet. dont think too much of north or south word pronnoue diff, focus on the main wan u are learning, slowly increase yr voculabry usages . when u got a feel of the basic and immedit level to listen and speaking, then slowly learn on the other side , north or south words. then u would be more easily to understand and learn these north or southern words.
lộn not lầm
Vietnamese scholar need rewrite the dictionary, and Vietnamese need to unite to speak a standard language so everyone can understand each other.
What a shame that Vietnamese script uses such ugly Latin alphabet with accent marks. Terribly ugly. :(. The French influence wasn’t so good in this aspect
Toàn luyên thuyên, sách vở
The audio is so bad that it is impossible to understand what you say. You wasted your time.
That's her voice ....I did understand
In real life, southern Vietnamese speak the way she does. If it is impossible to understand, how can you possibly survive in the southern Vietnam?
This is so informative🤩 I've been trying to learn southern dialect since I often visit Saigon. It will be much more practical.
