it warms my heart to see someone who is a foreigner come here and just deliver an absolute MASTERPIECE of an act. he stayed true to who he was, executed perfectly, and warmed the hearts of everyone listening. truly spectacular to watch. you can see it in conan's face afterwards

Two of the most legendary Finnish TV comedy shows of all-time (Tankki täyteen and Reinikainen) were written by an English guy who moved to Finland as a 20-year-old: Neil Hardwick. He speaks pretty good Finnish.

    • @yUm666

@Yonder Fankman Dettman was actually born in Helsinki, so he's not foreigner. In my opinion Roman Schatz deserves the merit along with Hardwick.

There's one UK born stand-up comedian in Finland, that I know of. Been in Finland 20 years or more, has family with a Finnish wife. He has quite an obvious British accent, but he handles his stuff, manages his Finnish enough to make the gig in Finnish. Sorry I don't remember his name.

Food for thought doesn't necessarily involve thinking about food or that your thoughts need actual food.
How am I supposed to know that bureaucrat is spelled like that? And not 'burocrat'?
How am supposed to now it's not pronounced as boo-reeah-oo-crat, based on the way its spelt.
What's the real pronunciation of GH?
      "g" as in ghost?
      "f" as in tough?
      "j" as in sengh
      silent as in night?
You had to look up 'sengh' to make sure it's a made-up word.

Yeah, I'd never thought much about that particular word, but he's right, it's really interesting! "Ass" often has less literal meaning, and more attitudinal meaning. Funny, that's not a feature I associate strongly with English. I study Japanese... Sort of -- I took two years in college, and now I'm able to read manga with the help of a dictionary, pick up lots of conversations in anime. Anyway, Japanese has a lot of words like that. I get hung up on what is meant literally by a expression, what kind of implications a usage carries, word histories and relationships... Basically, I try to understand the language the way a native speaker would. For instance, why is "mono" ("thing") used to indicate strong emotion or a reason for something? Does it have something to do with making something more concrete for emphasis, like how we use "literally"? ...Huh, I never thought about it before, but actually, that sounds about right. Anyway, the point is, sometimes have to stop and remember -- native speakers don't think about it that much. It's the same for English speakers. I mean, yeah, some things are obvious, but others, like here? I've intuited how to use "ass" without ever stopping to think about it. There are a lot of other things I HAVE thought about, like... Just off the top of my head, why do we use "now" to mean both "in the present," and as an interjection to create emphasis (often to draw comparison)? Those seem like kind of disparate usages. ...If I had to guess, I think it has some kind of implication of immediacy, it makes the topic seem the present situation. And there's another one -- "present," how it can mean either the current time, or that someone or something is physically there, or it can be used as a verb to indicate that something is being put forth (and THAT usage extends to a noun meaning "gift"). All of these usages are related, but we usually don't even recognize those kinds of relationships. Being fluent is definitely not a matter of grasping every nuance. Remembering that helps me let it go and just read or listen.

he has the voice, gesture, funny face and talent to be a classic comedian like the old comedy cinema legends. I hope cinema can use his talent because comedy in cinema is not like before.

Tho for some men, it my start from that end. For me, that's more like the bust. Yet an agreeable face makes my ass forget for a while she has some body below her neck.

I'm Finnish and I think one of the first "culture shocks" (for both sides I guess) when I first actually spoke with english-native people in real life was this "What's up" "How is it going" thing. I answered them with brutal honesty (I didn't really even feel bad at the time) and you could just feel the akwardness after that.
Thinking hard right now if I should just adopt Ismo's methods and just give them another "what's up" back in future.

    • @carlmurphy2416
      @carlmurphy2416 6 лет назад +16

When someone says 'How's it going" the trick is to say "yeah not too bad", even if your dog has just been run over by a car. That's the polite British thing to do. It might also be the American way I'm not sure.

I'm a Finn too, and while we get them uncomfortable answering questions that were never supposed to be answered they also ask questions that make us feel uncomfortable. I have people I hardly know asking how's my family, mom, etc. My instant reactions is that they are waaay too nosy and it's none of their business. In Finland questions like that are considered way too personal and invading unless this person actually knows my family well. For the same reason I probably act like a complete jerk in USA because I never ask about their family. It's just not my business unless they bring it up! My husband (American) is used to this by now and my ways of getting straight to the point when having a conversation. He's also learning that silence isn't awkward, for a Finn it's just one more form of communication, positive or negative, but mostly positive. :)

In the US, it depends on where you are and the circumstances. If you're in a rush or on the move, just a generic fine, or just we just return the question. But, otherwise, many people just start talking about their day. LIke, in Walmart standing line, they'll start talking about their grandkids or soemething.
