So lovely - I do love having the privilege of being able to watch such a lovely mother and son relationship...so heartwarming. Those soap dishes are beautiful and such a lot of hard work and love has gone in to them. I think people will jump at the chance to buy anything John makes to put in your shop. Have a gorgeous day lovely people x

I loved watching John in his work shop. When I was younger, my late husband and I had a work shop built for my brother in our backyard. He was living with us at the time. We had such a good time together making all kinds of projects. He was so gifted and country decor was very popular at the time. This brought back so many memories. John is such a dear man.....I loved when he ruffled your hair there at the end. Thank you so much for sharing this video and have a Blessed day.

Fabulous!! What a creative lot you are! My father was, by profession, a forester. About 40 years ago, he brought home a some cherry wood and, for Christmas, designed some animal napkin rings. As kids, it was our job to sit under a sheet on the sofa with a napkin ring and strips of sandpaper to make them as smooth as a baby's bottom. When they were all finished, like you and John, we had an oiling session. My grandparents loved their present. My mom and dad have them now. I think my favorite was the snake! Thanks for bringing back fond memories! Be well in your bubble. As always, dear Norma.

Suggestion for a small wood item from john's workshop: hanging ornaments, Xmas tree, star, angel, simple flat shapes with a hole drilled, maybe a ribbon for hanging.

I was a wood carver for about 20 years about 15 years ago so I really really liked see Johnny in his workshop! Wow! love all the tools and space. I only used a router, band saw, drill press, and countertop sander but hand carving was the most used tool. Great job John (Johnny😁). Nice soap dish. I made a wood finish of beeswax and non toxic clear walnut oil -good for salad bowls and lip balm😊 Great to have these vids, Kate, big warm hugs!🦌💌❤️🙏👍🇨🇦☕️✌️

Woodworking is so fantastic! My dad has been in construction and was a crane operator since he was a young teen. He had a brain bleed eight years ago now and still piddles with wood and has taught me a lot. Man, what he wouldn’t give for a shop like John has!

Hi Kate :) You have such a lovely family. The soap dishes are perfect. I used to make soap years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Back before how-to videos and buying ingredients in bulk was a real checklist of safety from manufacturers because I wasn't a bulk company! I bought books, made notes, and a lot of trial batches. When John brought out the whole trunk slab of Elm, I caught my breath because it was so beautiful. So, I know the pleasure and process of handmade items. The way your son spoke of you, "mother," warmed my heart. The recipients of these lovely treasures are truly lucky...and...such pretty posies in your bathroom. I have to say that I smiled all the way through this video as I did with the candle making one :)

SPLENDIDLY well don Dear Kate and the GANG! Such joy is in watching you alongside John creating and sharing a craft. My favorite materials to surround myself with are all natural. Mostly because i am a very tactile person and i fancy the thought that i can use an item a lifetime and then pass it on to my loved ones. Anything wood, stoneware, rocks and paper or animal and plant fibers seem to have always called to me. The soap dish is beautiful and how beautiful to connect us all in such a special way. It is so positive for us to consider each other as small parts of a whole. So of course I'd vote aye to John doing another project. Even before the next Christmas box. Would it be difficult to create a small cedar block or box. Maybe one with a simple mushroom or blossom painted painted on it... Whatever you decide I am here on my hill in Idaho loudly cheering you on. For all on the LGS here is a pot of tea, a plate of ginger snaps and a cheshire cat I am passing along. The cat oddly just appeared on my lap. 😉 Try to stay well wherever you are. Especially now we should try to believe in magic! Have a nice night.💞🙏✌

It’s wonderful of John, also, to be part of the project. Elm is beautiful and it’s very nice of him to share it. Dutch elm disease killed many elm trees in the U.S. also. When I was a kid my street was lined with elm trees, and I remember seeing the trees die one at a time, one after the other. So very sad.

I agree, it happened here in Truro, NS Canada. Our town had the branches removed and then wood craftsmen sculptured prominent people and animals throughout the town. They made up a tourist map and booklet that allowed people to drive around and learn about the culture of our town that was founded in 1759.
Sadly over last 30 years some have rotted and had to be dismantled...but, it was a added tourist attraction to see when they visited Our Victoria Park and Tidal Bore... Nice memories.

I'm glad Kate that John is in your bubble. I have heard the single parents without a garden or out door space have the hardest time. It would be great for John to have something in the shop, something to go in my sewing kit, covers for a needle book, or a dish shape to fill and cover as a pin cushion. The soap dishes are beautiful! John's workshop is awesome. I would definitely purchase something that John has made for the store, he's a very talented young man. So nice to see John tussling his mom's hair again. Thanks Kate, John, and Anna for letting us visit with you. What an amazing Christmas box you are all putting together.

Oh that is lovely! I have just set an alarm for the shop update. The makes from the box would be such a nice gift to myself for my new home. And Johns makes in the shop? Yes please!

That slab and the grain of Elm is beautiful. Such a nice workshop. He turned out a pretty soap dish. In The USA, same thing the dutch elm killed the elms. And they are a very interesting looking tree. Once oiled they are truly a piece of art.

🤗 What a wonderful son you have Kate to help you with your project! It’s always so amazing to me that men that work with wood are always so knowledgeable of their source.

Oh Kate! John ruffling your hair like you’re a naughty mummy 🤣 that’s exactly the kind of thing my eldest son (almost 18) would do to me. Must be because he’s so much taller than me. I would love a Last Homely House chopping board. Is that something that John could make? Doesn’t have to be massive, just large enough to slice cheese 🧀 for cheese & biscuits, or lemons 🍋 for gin - we could pass them down the LGS. Or different sizes? I wonder if you could get a pyrotechnic stamp ? 🤷🏻 made of your logo that could be burnt into the board. That would be cool 👍🏼 Sending lots of love, Sam xxx

all good ideas - we can't get away from the fact that wood is so heavy to send - it might make the cost too prohibitive? xxx

I would love to see John as he works and the finished items. His workshop looks very well stocked with different tools. I really treasure anything wood. The wood grain is always so interesting and varied. Yes, there is an American elm.

My husband is a woodworker and wood turner, I know how much work goes into the simplest of items. Love everything that's going into the Christmas boxes.

So pleased you were able to bubble with the family. This was the thing that got us all through. 7 days from now I got engaged and battled to marry 6 weeks later. A tough time for it to happen, but wouldn’t change it for the world.

This was fantastic. Those are beautiful. I have an antique China cabinet that has doors of pressed Elm. Our American Elm suffered greatly and there are just a few that survived. The grain of the wood is gorgeous. Thank you for posting this and thank you to Anna and John.

John! That knotty grainy elm with those beautiful hues!!! Brilliant! The idea of having a lovely piece of English Elm in my own home all the way here in the U.S.? 💗💗💗 Especially knowing who made it & how much care went into it! THANK you!

So interesting. We have a huge Siberian Elm tree in our front yard. The deer love the leaves. That plank of elm coated with the Danish finish looked delicous, just like the soap!

Wow! Every video this week, I say this is my favorite item in the Christmas box, but I am sure this elm soap dish with the posh danish oil is my ultimate favorite! 😍 I love the story of where the elm wood came from and the thoughtfulness of the design. Loads of artistic talent in Kate’s family💕
